CORRELATION BETWEEN DEPRESSION LEVEL AND BASIC ACTIVITY OF DAILY LIVING


SKILL ON ELDERLY

Analitic correlation study in residence of Sosial Tresna Werdha Budi Sejahtera

Background : Elderly is someone in age more than 60 years old. Depression is mood
disorded indicated by moodiness, sadness, decreasing of energy and loss of passion to do
activity until effected to basic activity of daily living.

Objective of Study : Identifying the correlation between depression level and basic activity of
daily living skill on elderly in PSTW Budi Sejahtera

Method of Study : Research used analitic correlative approach. Research design used cross
sectional with data analysis Spearman correlation. Data collection technique with interview and
observation used questionnaire Geriatric Depression Scale to assess depression level and
Barthel Index to assess Basic Activity of Daily Living.

Result : There is correlation between depression level and basic activity of daily
living skill on elderly. Negative correlation with weak closeness (p-value=0,037,α=0,05,r=-0,255)
Disscussion : Depression elderly concomitant with regression of functional movement
resulting difficulty to fullfiling daily need activity like food beverage basic need, urination,
defecate, toileting, bathing, dress up, mobility, transfer, self care, up and down stairs. The
higher the level of depression the lower elderly skill to do basic activity of daily living.
