1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
Rotaract Clubs are international Rotary-sponsored organizations of service club for men and women
aged 18-30 that fosters leadership and responsible citizenship, encourages high ethical standards in all
professions and promotes international understanding and peace.

Rotaract provides an opportunity for the youth to enhance their personal development, address the
physical and social needs of their communities and promote better relations between all people
worldwide through a framework of friendship and service. Rotaract is a combination of “Rotary” and
“Action”

1.2 What exactly do Rotaract Clubs do?

Rotaract clubs organize a variety of projects and activities, depending primarily on the interests of the
club members. There are, however, three types of activities within the Rotaract program that all clubs
undertake in varying degrees: professional development, leadership development, and service projects.
Together; these three areas ensure a balanced club program and provide important experience and
opportunities for the personal development of each Rotaractor.

1.3 Why is Rotaract important?

Today’s young people are tomorrow’s parents, professionals, business leaders and community leaders.
With the help of programs like Rotaract; youth can gain tools and skills necessary to develop into
responsible and productive members of society. Rotaract can instill in its members life skills that can be
shared with others for generations to come. Rotaract helps youth to engage in various social
responsibilities among the young people of today as well as the passion of caring for others.

2.0 About the Blood Donation Project

2.1 Overview

Blood donation projects are projects where by all Rotaractors in Dar es Salaam get together and
organize for collection of blood from donors. Rotaractors annually collaborate with the National Blood
Transfusion Services.
Statistics shows that Rotaract clubs as a non government organization in 18th march 2008 got a good
record of 466 blood donors in a day in three centers (mabibo hostel, mnazi mmoja grounds and
Duce)this gives us courage of success to perform it again at a target of 1000 units of blood from donors.

2.2 Why a Blood Donation Project?

Statistics show that Tanzania needs at least 500,000 units of blood every year to cover the need of blood
in hospitals. The NBTS is able to collect only 120,000 units of blood a year.
Rotaractors have seen a room of a role to play in the community. The Blood to be collected will be taken
by the NBTS for supply to hospitals. Further to the above, there have also been projects concerning
Sickle cell patients. Some units of the collected blood will be provided / set aside for the sickle cell
patients.
