n the weekend that follows the
trade days of the Shizuoka Hobby

event takes place, the ‘modellers’

thousands) of Japanese modellers show
off their work. This year, Brett Green
visited this impressive spectacle and he
focused his camera on the armour models
that were on the tables for all to see. •

n this release, Tamiya have chosen the excellent 1:35 Pak36(r) from Ukrainian maker ‘ICM’ plus the set of DAK
crew figures that go with it, throwing in a set of moulded sandbags, a neat display base and a sheet of sand-
textured ground too, creating a very appealing ‘all in one box’ mini diorama set. ICM’s injection-moulded parts
are sharply detailed and quite close in overall quality to Tamiya, which is impressive. The figures, too, are very
well done with natural poses and proportions, and good detail. The moulded base plate and sand-textured make the
perfect finishing touch. ICM’s moulded gun and crew figures are well worthy of a renaissance in a Tamiya kit box
and the base/sand sheet are welcome additions; a well thought-out package. MN

'Jabo' (jagdbomber) fighters during the 1944
Normandy campaign.
Tristar have an excellent track record with the
Panzer 38(t) having produced various versions of
the original gun tank with full interiors. In addition,
they have released three versions of the Flak 38
providing early and late versions. This Flakpanzer
is therefore a logical combination with elements
taken from these previous releases plus four new
sprues providing the superstructure and Ausf
M hull. The quality of the new parts is perfectly
acceptable, but in a few areas, the definition is
not quite as sharp as seen with the original Panzer
38(t) or Flak 38 kits.

BEGINNING THE MODEL

Construction starts with the hull and interior fittings.
Inspection of the inner sidewalls and floor reveals a
number of deep ejector-pin marks that will require
filling. Accessing these areas to sand away filler
while not damaging the raised joint flanges can
prove challenging, so I chose to remove all the
raised detail, fill and sand the marks then re-instate
the flanges with plastic card. Adding the flange
detail after assembling the hull has the added
advantage of covering any joins in the corners. The
‘punch & die’ set was used extensively to add the
many tiny rivet heads seen on the finished model.
The interior parts provided by Tristar are
exceptionally well detailed, especially the gearbox Views into the frontal compartment reveals the large gearbox in the centre with its ribbed structure and the drum-shaped steering brakes in front
of it. The complex driver’s controls can be seen on top of the gearbox
and steering levers. The latter are made up of a
sandwich of brass levers and spacers that are best
threaded onto an appropriate diameter plastic
spindle and clamped together before adding a
small amount of cyano glue to secure the assembly.
This can then be secured to the plastic housing with
a little more cyano glue.
The engine and associated fuel tanks and
radiator are equally well detailed, although I feel
a little reference could have been included for the
modeller to add missing fuel and electrical lines. I
struggled to find good information for the engine
plumbing, so may add this at a later date if clear
reference comes to light in the future. With the
engine bay open, one can easily see through the
Close-up views of the gearbox and steering system, out of the hull. The author has added some small but important details such as return springs
armoured side extensions that provide the engine on the brakes and other small components
with fresh air. The simple grilles would have been
an ideal candidate for photo-etched brass
however this feature is not provided by
Tristar and thus need to be added. I used
0.3mm plastic rod.

RUNNING GEAR
The suspension units are assembled from
multiple parts that allow the modeller to
vary the wheel position should the finished
model be placed on an uneven diorama
base. An added bonus with all of Tristar’s
38(t) based vehicles is the separate road

The kit comes with an excellent replica of the engine, painted green here. Note the red oxide primer lining in the engine bay In the driving compartment, we see the green-painted gearbox
and ivory (elfenbein) firewall and inner hull-sides

scribing a wood grain on all faces. The strap work

can then be reinstated using plastic card and the
assembly completed by adding a single retaining
wingnut in the centre. The completed fenders were
only tacked in place, as they will be separated
from the hull after spraying the camouflage. This is
to ensure all sides of the tools are painted properly
as the normally hidden rear faces of the tools are
visible through the sides of the open engine bay.

UPPER STRUCTURES
Moving to the superstructure, the entire fighting
compartment can be built as a separate assembly
that can be added to the hull once the interior
details such as the engine are painted and
installed. The internal flange and rivet detail is a
little soft in places, so again I opted to replace all
the flanges with plastic card. The punch and die
set was used again to produce the many internal
rivet heads.
The hinged superstructure extensions are all
provided as separate parts giving the modeller full
control over their final position. This is the second

face, the latch bases were destroyed but are easily
reinstated with plastic card. The latches themselves
are as supplied in the kit.
Moving to the fittings within the fighting
compartment, the four ammo box holders and
radio racks are provided in photo-etched brass.
After careful folding, the parts were soldered to
ensure a strong assembly and fitted to the vehicle.
The upper radio rack right hand bracket does not
appear to match the image in the instructions and
needs to be folded ‘back to front’ to fit properly.
Other than that, all other parts fold perfectly and
enable the radios to be painted separately and Views into the fighting compartment show the radio and magazine racks in photo-etched brass, as well as the internal ribbing
installed late in the build.

The communications ports, into which crew-
members could plug a set of headphones, are
not supplied for the fighting compartment and
need to be scratchbuilt. One is provided for the
driver, so this part can be used as a guide. MP40
ammunition pouches, stored in the right hand rear
of the superstructure are also omitted by Tristar, but
are common parts in figure sets so I luckily had a
few spares that could be used. Only a single spare
20mm ammo box is supplied by Tristar towards
the Flakpanzer’s compliment of four boxes in the
sponsons and eleven boxes in the pedestal mount
of the Flak 38. Luckily the Hong Kong maker ‘K59’
produce an exquisite set of resin boxes plus ammo
clips that were used on this model.

MAIN WEAPON
The 20mm Flak 38 provides the Flakpanzer’s
punch. This weapon not only proved adequate as
an anti-aircraft weapon but was also used against
ground targets with devastating results. The Flak
38 provided by Tristar was first released as a
stand-alone kit some years ago and, at least in my
opinion, is the best version of the weapon available
in this scale. The detail provided is outstanding and
The driver’s position was cramped in this machine and must have been noisy and hot too
requires little additional work or detailing. The one
exception is the plastic barrel. The kit part is well
detailed within the limitations of injection moulding;
however a turned brass replacement with fully
perforated flash suppressor lifts the level of detail
still further. I used an example manufactured by
AFV Club.
The Flak 38 armoured shields are perhaps a little
thick, but are accurate in shape and fittings for a
standard armoured weapon. When installed in the
Flakpanzer 38(t), the shields' outer edges were cut
down to allow the gun to rotate within the limited
space of the fighting compartment. No hint is made
in the instructions, but referring to the few remaining
images of the original vehicle, it is clear that the Close-up view of the engine vent within the hull overhang Underside of noseplate reveals rivet detail and spare track links
plates were cut back to the edges of the mounting
brackets on the rear. This was done quite
crudely by cutting torch, as burn marks are
clearly visible in the surrounding paint.
Tristar’s Flak38 is very well detailed and
little needs adding to it, other than some

than the national crosses, the only other
markings visible are the divisional emblem

FINAL FLAKPANZER THOUGHTS on the open fighting compartment roof
In conclusion, there are elements of this kit that
are quite outstanding – the interior parts and the
Flak 38 to name two. The ease of assembly and
fit of parts is pretty faultless and the inclusion
of individual tracks makes this pretty much a
complete package straight out of the box. The lack
of sufficient ammo containers to fill the fighting
compartment is a little sad but not a deal breaker.
Although Tristar have been quiet for a few years
now, I hope that we see further releases in time. •

AN

DEVELOPMENT
Andy Argent builds a Trumpeter kit from a few
years back, the E-10 'Entwicklungsfahrzeug'
or ‘development vehicle’

24 Military Illustrated Modeller - October 2014

M
y name is Andy Argent, I have been
modelling all my life, off and on. I used to
walk to school and would pass the local
model shop. Every couple of weeks it would
have a change of window displays which would
include large dioramas and these were the things
that inspired me the most. I would look at them
for ages thinking “I want to be able to do that”.
Dioramas are the one thing that is missing from
model shops today, in my opinion. After a break
from the hobby when I started showing an interest
in girls and classic cars, I was re-inspired in the late
eighties after seeing some Verlinden magazines.
Then, after another break in the early nineties until
2005, I got well and truly hooked after visiting a
large model show. I have been building ever since!
The kit tracks were substituted with ‘winterketten’ from a Dragon kit to give the E-10 an extra touch of visual interest

T
The kit
On first inspection, the kit looked to be very nicely
detailed. As this was a 'paper panzer' (vehicles
which were designed and maybe prototypes
made, but not put into production) I thought I
would change the appearance a little to make it
a bit more of an individual build. The kit includes
four sets of tracks (two sets of 'early' and 'late'
individual links plus two rubber-band types) which
is great value, and although I didn’t use any of
the supplied sets, they are well moulded. Instead, I
chose to install winterketten tracks (not supplied) as
this gave the vehicle a bit more of a beefy look. I
also chose to install only three skirts on each side,
with one being chamfered at the rear. This gave
the E-10 that 'Centurion' skirt appearance and
also, with only three fitted instead of four, it gave a
sort of 'coupé' look to the beast! The skirt-brackets
had to be made longer to accommodate the wider
tracks but this didn't cause any great difficulty.
The winterketten tracks are individual links from a
Dragon. The only annoying thing was that each link
had two really nasty injector-pin marks that needed
sanding off. This I did in a couple of evenings while
watching TV to alleviate the boredom!
Another change I made to the kit was to fit
armour plates over the engine deck screens.
However, as these usually proved insufficient as a
defence against fighter-bomber fire, I thought I'd
set them upright on a hinged fixing, to double up
as shields for riding panzer-grenadiers. With these
in place, the model took on the individual look that
The winterketten’s grousers extend to almost the same width as the track links themselves
I was after and was also practical in my opinion.
Finally, I added a small shield in front of one of the
hatches and some picture-hanging wire for the
tow rope.

Painting
With the build complete, it was time for the paint
scheme. I wanted to paint the model in a single coat
of sand yellow but I didn’t want it to look too plain,
so I opted to use AK Interactive's colour-modulation
set. First I gave some of the armour plate some
texture with the use of the Dremel fitted with a dental
burr, bounced the spinning tip over the surface with
no force, just let the weight of the drill do the work
(an Angus Creighton technique! Ed.)
I started the paint application with a coat of
Halfords grey plastic primer. I like this material as it
goes on really well and keeps all the detail sharp.
After this had dried overnight I started with the
acrylics from AK Interactive; 'Dunkelgelb Shadow'
was first applied to the bottom of the vehicle and
all the running gear. This was followed by a coat
of 'Dunkelgelb Dark Base', letting the shadows
just show in the recessed areas. Dunkelgelb base
was lightly sprayed next so as to leave some of the
previous paint stages showing through each time. Here we see the author’s rear deck additions of angled armour plates for tank-rider protection

Remember, darker at the bottom, gradually working

lighter as you get higher up the model. After cutting
some card to use as a mask, I sprayed some
'Dunkelgelb Light Base' on the upper hull sides and
on certain details on the top of the hull. This was
followed by applying highlight to raised areas. The
good thing about these paints is they can be dried
quickly with a hairdryer, making each stage of the
painting really quick. The idea of the modulation
style is to represent extremes of light and shadows,
a little like an oil painting. In my opinion, this is
best done with a single colour and helps to make a
monotone scheme more interesting.
The tools and tow rope were touched in next.
The tool handles were painted in a light flesh colour
and the metal parts picked out in gunmetal. Decals
were applied next and set with Microsol. This was
followed by some 'filter' coats (light colour-washes)
which were allowed to dry overnight. I then
applied an oil-paint dot treatment using different
tones of colour to blend and enhance the colours
of the modulation process, keeping darker colours
on shadows and lighter colours over the highlights.
The dots were blended with a brush dampened The running gear received a base coat of black, which establishes ‘shadows’ over which the top colours and weathering can be applied

I
n this hobby, our decisions on what to build
and when to build it is often influenced by
the ‘newest kit’ to come across you modelling
bench. I know for me, as stated by my dear
friend Karl Madcharo, I’m easily distracted by the
next ‘shiny object’ that I see! Okay, I admit it, he’s
correct. I’m a pushover for the next new thing, but
when a new kit is given to me as a free sample,
it looks nicely detailed and it can be built in one
sitting… It becomes a must build! That is what
happened to me when I got my hands on Tamiya’s
1:48 BA-64B.
So what can you say about building a kit, let
alone a Tamiya kit that only has forty-two parts,
of which four are for a half-commander figure?
Ready, set, go… Okay, I’m done! That’s just about
how it went. The model was built at one sitting
over a weekend lunch break. I was going to do an
airbrush demo that I needed something to paint,
and this seemed like the perfect subject. But more
about that later. As already stated, the kit was by
anyone’s standard, ‘a quick build’. The only thing
I wanted to do to it to add a little bit of detail was
to turn the front wheels a bit, wire the headlight,
add a few rivets that were missing, thin the back of
the saw down and add some stowage and tarps.
The tarp rolls are from Value Gear and are some of
the most beautiful and scale-appropriate that I have
ever seen. The packs, machine gun, and helmet are
from Tamiya’s 1:48 Russian Infantry set, but more
about that later. All of this took one more modelling
The author began this project as a demonstration piece session that lasted about two hours or so. Once I
at the popular Brookhurst Hobbies in Garden Grove, had these things done, I was ready to put some

Time for some paint

Standing behind a demo table at Brookhurst
Hobbies, in Southern California, I had my Tamiya
paint and Silly Putty at the ready to create a camo
Here we can see the diminutive size of the model
as it sits in the author’s hand prior to receiving its scheme that I found in the Wydawnictwo Militaria
weathering treatments publication #303 on the BA-64. This is an excellent
book to draw little details out of on not only the
vehicle but also weathering. In between answering
questions from modellers on my airbrush techniques
(what they don’t know is that I just fake it!), I
preshaded the model with flat black including the
entire interior using my GREX Genesis.XN Double
Action Top Gravity Airbrush. The next step was
to paint the areas that would be the tan ‘Mickey
Mouse’ pattern with a custom mix of colours to
make a warm tan shade. Once that was dry I
broke out the Silly Putty and rolled small balls then
pressed the down to make a series of disc-shapes
that make up the remaining pattern. Then, over
the Silly Putty I sprayed a mix of warm green
tones covering every exposed area on the top and
sides including the tyre rims. Lastly, I covered the
rims with Silly Putty to cover the rims and painted
the tyres and underside with a dark brown-black
mixture. Realizing that the stowage was going to
be painted by hand using Vallejo Model Color
paints, the only thing I had left to airbrush was a
tarp made from lead foil that was going across the
top of the turret to cover up the lack of detail in the
area. At the end of the day, the airbrushing was
done and all that was left was to do detail painting
and the weathering process. Total elapse time on

the shape of the hook After a few days had passed, I took another look
at the model and I realized with some effective
weathering, this could be a very nice looking little
build! So the next step was to get out the oils, Mig
Pigments so that I could start the process. For me,
this is one of the most fun parts of building models.
It is key to telling a story with you build. Is it in a
muddy environment, is it winter, is it dusty, and is it
almost new or well used? That all is determined by
the type of weathering you use and the degree of
weathering you do. For this little gem, I wanted to
age it as if it was a mid-war machine, maybe in the

So with that goal in mind, the first thing I did
with a basic ventilation slot
was to take one panel at a time and coat it with a
was of turpenoid and then dabbed small dots of
Payne’s Grey, Orange, White and Yellow Ochre
around the area. With a flat wide brush dipped in
clean turpenoid, I drew them all downward and
thinned them out to a point where it just suggests
streaks left on the surface by rain water and such.
One that was done, I used pin washes of burnt
sienna in all the cracks and groves. Once dry,
I started bringing out areas that I wanted it to
appear as if dust a dirt gathered with a mix of
tan oils and pigments. This is done in a way to
move your eye around the model while not being
overwhelming. On the lower parts of the model,
varying shades of oil and pigment mixtures were
dabbed on so that it looked like mud and dirt is
built up from driving around the hills and fields of
the battlefield. At this point, one of the last area to
Steering linkage and
brake line on show, be weathered were the tyres. I love when the colour
a worthwhile detail of the rim is set of by the buildup of dirt and dust
addition on a model on the brown-black rubber of the tyre. With very
small dabs of Yellow Ochre oil and then a light
dusting of pigments, the story is set!
Taking a step back, I still felt it was missing
something. I decided to add a few addition
elements to complement the story. I reached into
my Tamiya 1:48 Russian Infantry Set and decided
to hang a machine gun on one side of the hull, a
canvas bag on the other and place a helmet on the
upper deck by the turret. The machine gun had a
Close-up of vehicle foil strap added and the bag had some thin wire
jack and its welded-on
stowage bracket added around the top and fed back into the tarps
so as to make it look like it was tied off at the top.
These were pre-printed and added and then an
overall dusting of Dulcote was sprayed to bring all
of the finishes down to the same level.
In the end, this ended up being a fun little
build. It may seem like a lot to say about such
a tiny model but even the smallest builds have a
fair amount of thinking and effort that goes into it.
Great little subject, great little build. Now my hope
is that we finally get some modern armour from
Tamiya in this scale! •

The latest volume in the irreplaceable Nuts and Bolts series (now at number thirty-two!) takes
an amazingly detailed look at the medium (three-ton) off-road trucks of the Reichswehr,
Germany’s military organisation from 1919 to 1935, prior to the formation of the
Wehrmacht. In Nuts and Bolts’ inimitable style, we are treated to an authoritative volume
of the subject, using hundreds of original photos (wow, those guys really liked to use their
cameras to shoot their chums and hardware back in those days!) showing the wide variety
of variants of the truck type in use in pre-war Germany. The initial 129 pages are devoted
to these and that’s a lot of wonderfully evocative and detailed photographs. Following this,
we have a generous section of 1:35 drawings, colour profile illustrations (when applied, the
camouflage patterns of these trucks were surprisingly colourful) and then we are treated to
museum walk-arounds and modelling section showing Tony Greenland’s build-up of ICM’s
1:35 Krupp L3H163 Kfz.72 kit. Another fantastically thorough production of 224+ pages
and a must-have if you’re a dedicated model superdetailer. MN

MUST BUILD
BEFORE YOU DIE...
A NASTY SURPRISE AROUND THE CORNER

A
ny enemy vehicle coming around the corner into this set-up will come face to face with the
business end of the 76.2mm anti-tank gun of the US Army M10 (just) visible here. The crew
have gone to some lengths to disguise the vehicle in the time-honoured style of tree branches
and even in black and white, it blends in remarkably well with the grassy bank in the
background of the photograph.
The beauty of this scene is that (availability of figures allowing) it could be re-created in 1:48 or
1:35 scales, as Tamiya produce both the M10 and Jeep in 1:48. In 1:35, AFV Club offer a good
rendition of the tank destroyer and you can choose either Tamiya’s or Bronco’s 1:35 Jeeps which
are both excellent, modern kits with lots of detail.

NEW in the ‘HOW TO BUILD...’ series
HOW TO BUILD...
REVELL 1:32 SPITFIRE MK.IIA
The name Spitfire has now become synonymous with
an entire island people, and their battle to maintain their
freedom in the shadow of the Nazi jackboot. The very
shape and sound of the Spitfire seems to still invoke and
embody the usually reserved pride of the British person.
It is probably true to say that Reginald Mitchell’s beautiful
aircraft design is one of the most easily recognised and
much-loved shapes that ever took to the skies.
When actual mass production of the Spitfire ceased in
1948, over 20,000 machines had been built, and operated
by over thirty countries around the world.
This iconic series saw service with the RAF right up
until the mid-1950s. It also saw service with the Irish Air
Corps as late as 1961; a full 26yrs after the flight of the
prototype K5054.
Revell has now released an all-new 1:32 scale
Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IIa. With some minor
modifications, this model may also be built as a Mk.I
or a Mk.Va.
Over the course of five Chapters, James Hatch examines
the kit contents in detail, describes construction of the
model with lavish illustrations, and points out the areas of
the kit that may be improved and corrected.
This new book features an exhaustive step-by-step guide
to construction; plus a painting and weathering tutorial.
A number of essential reference
resources are also included.
More than 200 photos, a reference
guide, and photos of the kit sprues
Only
are all included - a must have before
you build the model!
