Topic: Jerusalem is recognized as the capital of Israel

Makena: Hi, I’m Makena Klinkowize…

Sarah: … and I’m Sarah Isaac. We’re here tonight on Channel 8 News regarding the latest on
President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Makena: This controversial edict has lead President Trump to establish plans to relocate the
United States Embassy to the new capital, deviating from decades of the nation’s foreign
policies.
Sarah: After years of avoiding the declaration of Jerusalem as capital, United States leaders
have overcome their previous allegations that envisaged Jerusalem as an “international city.”
Israel had declared this independence in 1947, and proceeded to engage in a war to determine the
Green Line, or the border of control.
Makena: Finally, in 1967, the Six-Day War ended in Israel’s complete occupation of East
Jerusalem, bringing the entire area under their control. While the city’s inhabitants now saw
themselves as the rightful inhabitants, other nations were not as willing- up until today.
Sarah: A number of countries have had their embassy in Jerusalem before, including the
Netherlands and Costa Rica. And while Israel had passed a law that declared Jerusalem the
capital of Israel, the United States have finally made the same commendation.
Makena: The Israeli government commended and agreed with President Trump on his decision
to move the embassy. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the President on behalf of
Israel and recognized the move as an "important step towards peace, for there is no peace that
doesn't include Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel."
Sarah: Now we’ll take you on the scene with Claire Filaski, who is seeking the reflection of
Ridgefield High School global teacher, Mr. Dillane. Claire?
Claire: Thanks Sarah! I’m here with Mr. Dillane who has a very strong opinion regarding this
recent declaration from the United States. Mr. Dillane, what do you think some possible effects
of this change could be?
Mr. Dillane:
Claire: Interesting. Going off of that, what is your opinion on the situation? Do you believe that
Trump’s decision should have been made? Was it right of him to declare this?
Mr. Dillane:
Claire: I see. Finally, Trump says he supports a two-state solution, how do you think this will
work out?
Mr. Dillane:
Sarah: Excellent. Thank you for your time! Back to you, Makena!
Makena: Thanks, Claire!
Sarah: Like what you hear? Stay tuned in to Channel 8 News for more!
