the shelves one can simply reserve the book online , thereby saving lot of time . There are
some modern libraries which provide their members or readers opportunities to borrow e-
books and gain online access to their database. There has been seen changes in class room
activities with the introduction of projectors, many undergraduate and postgraduate courses
can be learnt online. People have started carrying tablets, laptops to institution instead of
heavy books and papers , even they take notes on these devices. According to a survey
which was conducted in U.S e-readers has grown from 17% in 2011 to 28% in 2016. Even the

has declined in recent years.
INTRODUCTION
PURPOSE
The purpose of this report is know whether why there is change in reading habit of books ,
the factors due to which there is decline , to do a proper investigation, and to find out what
could be the preventive measures. The best-selling, influential book The Power of Habit:
Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business, by Charles Duhigg (2014) was about changing
in reading habit, according to this book changes can be both by habit and choice. Another
author named Gravity Goldberg author of Mind sets and Moves: Strategies that Help
Readers Take Charge (Corwin 2016) and co-author of Conferring with Readers (Heinemann,
2007).
BACKGROUND
There has been decline in reading habits of college and school students. Earlier people were
too fond of reading novels, articles, research papers, but now scenario has changed. Manual
reading has changed to online with decline in reading habit. According to scholastic survey in
every 3 of 10 children, falling in the age group of 6-17, read 24 non-syllabus books annually
for pleasure. Only 50 per cent students read class books on working days. Only 25 % of
literate youth are interested in reading books (online or offline) according to National Youth
Readership Survey. This is very concerned problem which is faced by our generation and
would affect the upcoming one.

with the help of Questionnaire. The Questionnaire was issued to various people, the total
respondents were346 which included professionals from top notch level of the education
system, students who are apart of the system and whose opinion of these grounds would
matter a lot.

of BML Munjal University were majority respondents. The student population belongs to the
faculties of engineering, management, commerce graduates etc. people were from age
group 18 to 25. In minorities came working people, institutional heads or faculties, research
workers etc. they were of age group 30 to 40.

LITERATURE REVIEW
There are different reasons due to which we can see decline in reading habit .few were:
Technology, media, online access, blogs etc. Television Availability or accessibility of reading
materials Peers or family influence. The benefits which could be seen if online education
system is followed which influences reading habit , but through online Education
system,(projectors, educomp)
Online library
Mentors, teachers, faculty, institution heads etc.
Soft skills
Review of literature on changing reading habits has the above variables.
We have identified 26 variables with which we preceded our work. Different kinds of test
were conducted to get the reliability and validity of those variables. Factor analysis was done
to group different variables into factors, 9 factors were identified. In the previous research
papers on the concerned topic there were some literature gaps which was that the data was
collected by the higher authorities of the educational institutions and the students viewpoint
and data was missing which led to an incomplete analysis in our research we have covered
the students viewpoint as well which is making our analysis more effective and accurate. The
literature gap in our research is that our data is restricted to a particular area and there is no
diversity in our data analysis, so the viewpoints may overlap each other to some extent.
Changes in reading habit is a very sensitive issue which is very important to be analysed by
all aspects, through the information we have gathered this concept is not well analysed till
date, so it becomes essential to research on this topic.
LIMITATION
We couldn’t reach to the philanthropists who are contributing to the field of education. We
were not able to contact most people who are at high post in the field of education. We
couldn’t get much response from the people who don’t have basic facilities and access to
the internet. We were not able to make contact with the government officials who are
working in the education department. The survey which was conducted was particularly for
region Gurgaon as our college is located here, we could not get the survey of people from
different cities and education background. Survey could have more accurate.
