Annual
Report
Letter from the President and CEO
Legal Momentum’s research, analysis, advocacy, and policy engagement, and its ability to move the needle on
women’s issues nationwide has held steady for more than four decades. For 45 years, Legal Momentum has
been committed to advancing the economic and physical security of women and girls across the country, and
to developing groundbreaking legal strategies that bring about dramatic and lasting change in law and policy.
From precedent-setting discrimination litigation, to innovative law enforcement strategies, Legal Momentum
continues to advance the rights of women and girls nationwide.

Our 2015 annual report highlights our legal and policy work on behalf of all girls and women, including ending
gender bias in the courts, preventing violence against women, protecting survivors’ access to justice in the
courts and on campus, and ensuring fairness in the workplace.

As we look to 2016 and beyond, and to continuing to do what we do so well, we are grateful to our partners
around the country and the globe, and for the generous financial support of the donors who make our work
possible. Thanks for standing with us.

workplace, whether employees are victims or perpetrators. With the launch of the model policy, we offered a
webinar for more than 50 service providers and legal professionals and conducted a social media campaign
that included a “DV-Free Zone Bill of Rights” poster to display in workplaces. The model policy is designed to
be easy for employees to understand and for employers to adopt.
• Following a precedent-setting ruling in early 2014 that failure to accommodate breastfeeding could be a
violation of Title VII, Legal Momentum settled a suit on behalf of four women sheet-metal workers against
construction firm Vamco. The consent decree committed Vamco to implement anti-discrimination practices.

On Campus:

new law. It provides comprehensive policies to prevent sexual violence and support victims when it occurs.
• Throughout the fiscal year, Legal Momentum participated in advocacy and educational efforts, including
testifying before the New York City Council, conducting a “teach-in” at Columbia University, and participating
in the Dartmouth and Annapolis national summit meetings on campus sexual assault. Legal Momentum also
published “Know Your Rights” fact sheets for survivors of campus sexual assault.

In the Courtroom:
• Legal Momentum’s National Judicial Education Program (NJEP) was awarded a grant by the Department of
Justice Office of Violence against Women (OVW) to develop an introduction to the issues involved in teen
dating violence and its intersections with other areas of the law. The new educational materials present an
opportunity for judges, courts, and court-related professionals to protect victims, intervene with
perpetrators, and educate the communities they serve on prevention.
• NJEP continued its outreach to educate judges and other court professionals on the realities of sexual and
domestic violence, providing trainings in Illinois, New York, Oklahoma, Washington, and Wyoming, and for the
National Association of Women Judges. NJEP also presented two free webinars, The Intersection of Stalking
and Sexual Assault and Intimate Partner Sexual Assault: The Hidden Dimension of Domestic Violence.
• NJEP was awarded a second new grant from OVW that will provide $600,000 over three years to develop a
new curriculum that will train sexual assault and domestic violence victim service providers to help their
clients navigate the criminal justice system.

Amicus Briefs
In 2015, the United States Supreme Court decided several cases in which Legal Momentum filed friend-of-the-
court briefs. In Young v. UPS, the Court upheld some of the key provisions in the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, as
Legal Momentum had urged it to do in our amicus brief. In Texas v. Inclusive Communities, the Court reaffirmed
the Fair Housing Act as an important tool for combating not only racial segregation, but also denials of housing to
victims of domestic violence. As our brief explained, victims of domestic violence are often evicted in response to
municipal nuisance ordinances. In King v. Burwell, the Court affirmed a key component of the Affordable Care Act,
allowing millions of women to access affordable health insurance.
