1. Two coins are tossed simultaneously. The probability of getting atleast one head is ......
Sol. Total possible outcomes when coins are tossed is given by 2n , where n is number of trails
For 2 coins the possibility of outcomes is 22 = 4
{HH, TH, HT, TT}
Probability of atleast one head is 3/4 = 0.75

2. The divergence of the vector - yi + xj is ---------

dV x dV y dV z
Sol. Divergence =  .V = + +
dx dy dz
−dy dx
+ =0
dx dy
3. The determinant of 2 X 2 matrix is 50. If one of the eigen value of the matrix is 10, the
other eigen value is .........
Sol. Two important points about eigen values is
• Sum of eigen values equals to sum of the diagonal elements or trace of
matrix.
• Product of eigen values is equals to determinant of given matrix
So if determinant is 50 and one eigen value is 10, the other eigen value is 5.

4. A sample of 15 data is as follows : 17, 18, 17, 17, 13, 18, 5, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 20, 17, 3. The
mode of the data is ....
(a) 4 (b) 13 (c) 17 (d) 20
Sol. Mode refers to the most frequent number in the given data so in given data
17 appears 4 times
18 appears 2 times
So it is 17.
Ans : C
5. The laplace transform of tet is
S 1 1 S
(a) (b) (c) (d)
( S+1)2 ( S−1)2 ( S+1)2 ( S−1)
1 1
Sol. From the theorems of Laplace Transforms tneat = n+1
=
( S−a) ( S−1)2
Ans : B
6. A mass ‘m’ is attach to two identical springs having spring constant ‘k’ as shown in fig.
The natural frequency ω of this single degree of freedom system is

(a)
√ 2k
m
(b)
√ k
m
(c)
√ k
2m
(d)
√ 4k
m

Sol. ω =
√ k eq
m
In the shown fig. Springs are arranged in parallel. So
Keq = K1 + K2 = 2k

ω=
√ √ k eq
m
=
2k
m

7. For loaded cantilever beam of uniform cross section, the bending moment in N-mm
along the length is M(x) = 5x 2+10x. Where x is the distance measured from the free end
of the beam. The magnitude of shear force in the cross section at x =10mm is ....
dM ( x)
Sol. Shear force V(x) =
dx
d (5 x 2 +10 x)
= =10 x +10
dx
At 10mm V(x) = 10(10) + 10 = 110 N.
8. A cantilever beam of length L and flexural modulus EI is subjected to a point load P at
the free end. The elastic strain energy stored in the beam due to bending is
P 2 L3 P 2 L3 P L3 P L3
(a) (b) (c) (d)
6 EI 3 EI 3 EI 6 EI
1
Sol. Strain Energy = Pδ
2
P L3
For cantilever beam deflection δ =
3 EI
1 PL 3 P2 L3
Strain Energy = P =
2 3 EI 3 EI
Ans : A
9. The state of stress at a point is σx = σy = σz = τxz = τzx = τyz = τzy = 0 and τxy = τyx = 50 MPa
The maximum normal stress at that point is ......
Sol. When normal stresses in all directions are zero, the maximum stress is equals to the shear
stress acting on that body. So
Maximum normal stress = 50 MPa
10. A steel bar is held by two fixed supports and is subjected to increase in temperature of
100o C. The coefficient of thermal expansion and youngs modulus is 11 X 10 -6/oC and
200GPa. The magnitude of thermal stress induced in bar is
Sol. Thermal stress induced = EαΔT = 200 X 109 X 11 X 10-6 X100 = 220 MPa
