FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS (LAB)

(EXERCISE NO. – 1)

Q. Analyse a simple beam of size 0.23 m X 0.3 m as shown in figure using Abaqus software
and tabulate the results. Assume suitable loads and other constraints.

GIVEN :

Total span - 1.5 m

Beam size – 0.23 m X 0.3 m
Grade of concrete – M25

STEP 1 : Sketch a two−dimensional profile and create a part representing the simple
beam.

Under Part Module > Create Part ( )-

Name – Beam Size – 0.23 m X 0.3 m
Type – Deformable Depth – 1.5m
Shape – Solid
STEP 2 : Define the material properties.

Under Property module > Create Material ( ) -

Name – Concrete
Mechanical > Elasticity > Elastic
Modulus of Elasticity, E = 25 x 106 kN/m2
Poisson’s ratio = 0.2

STEP 3 : Assemble the model and create sets.

Under Assembly module > Create Instances ( ) –

Parts > Instance Type - Independent > Click on Beam > OK

STEP 4 : Configure the analysis procedure and output requests.

Under Step module > Create Step ( )–

Initial > Procedure Type – Static, General

Edit Field Output Request > Stresses, Strains, Displacements.
STEP 5 : Create Sections and assign section properties to the beam.

Under Materials > Sections ( ) Create Sections -

Name – Concrete c/s

Category – Solid
Type – Homogeneous > Continue.
Edit Section > Material – Concrete > OK
Section Assignment > Section – Concrete c/s > Select Beam > Done.

STEP 6 : Apply boundary conditions and loads to the beam.

Under Load module > Create Boundary Conditions ( )–

Name – BC 1, Step – Step 1, Type – Mechanical > Continue

Select region for boundary condition > Done
Edit Boundary Conditions > ENCASTRE (U1 = U2 =U3 =UR1 = UR2 = UR3) >
OK

Create Load > Pressure > Continue > Select Surfaces for the load >
Load Magnitude - 11 kN/m (applied as pressure) > OK
STEP 7 : Mesh the beam.

Under Mesh Module > Seed the instance ( ) > Approximate Global Size – 0.05
Mesh Part Instance ( ) > Yes

STEP 8 : Create a job and submit it for analysis.

Under Job module > Create Job > Continue > Submit
STEP 9 : View the results of the analysis.
