Volume 1 : Herr Doktor Tenma

Chapter 4
Brother and Sister

- Page 87 -

[Dusseldorf - Eisler Memorial Hospital]

Weisbach: Don't you remember anything about that night?

It could be anything, anything at all you remember...
Like, if someone came to your house or not...
Hmmmmmm...
You know what your own name is, don't you?

Chapter 4 : Brother and Sister

Weisbach: Your name is Anna.

Anna Liebert. Right?

- Page 88 -

Chapter 4 : Brother and Sister

- Page 89 -

Weisbach: Sigh.

Doctor: I told you, Detective, it's no good right now.

Nurse: She still isn't speaking yet.

Weisbach: She must get better sometime, Doctor.

Doctor: I just don't know...

Her parents were shot dead right before her eyes.
It appears that she is suffering from amnesia brought
on by the intense psychological shock to her brain.
They could also be seen as symptoms of hysteria or
dissociation.

Weisbach: Sigh... If we could just get these twin

siblings to provide some eyewitness testimony, we'd be on
our way to solving the case...
But Anna is like this...
And Johan just had an elaborate surgery to extract
the bullet from his brain... He just finally opened his
eyes...
- Page 90 -

Doctor: We ask for your patience in talking with these

children.
You must have some other proof to work with at the
moment.

Weisbach: Yes, we do.

The 22-caliber gun we found in the room is a Soviet
NSP...
The way the fingerprints were wiped clean off the gun
looks pro...
But the broken glass and the footprints we found make
it look like an amateur job.

Doctor: So is it a robbery, after all?

Weisbach: Don't know.

The Liebert family had just escaped from East
Germany. We can't be sure if anything was stolen or not.
We can't just ask the East how much they were
carrying.
Unless that wall in Berlin falls, a case like this is
worth nothing but headaches.
The victims were high officials in the East German
government.
If we don't clear this up quickly, the BKA will get
involved.

(Note: The BKA is the Bundeskriminalamt, the German

Federal Police Agency.)

- Page 91 -

Weisbach: They always come in afterwards and take all the

damn credit for solving the case from us local police.
We don't have time to waste!!
AHA! What about this?!
Let her see her brother!!

Doctor: Huh?

Weisbach: Maybe if they see each other's faces, she'll

feel better and her memory will come back.

Doctor: Er... But, our primary concern at the moment is

stablizing her mental condition.
Dr. Tenma hasn't given authorization to let the two
meet.

Weisbach: Dr. Tenma?

Doctor: Johan's presiding doctor.

Weisbach: Hmmmmm...

- Page 92 -

Weisbach: Well, what the hell am I supposed to do,

then...?

Tenma: {It's okay...

Your brother will live.}

Becker: Hey Dr. Tenma, whatcha spacin' out about?

Tenma: Oh... Dr. Becker.

Becker: Look at that face. Have you been sleeping well?

Tenma: Y-yes, I've just been very busy with emergency

operations lately...

Becker: They've been using you like a dog ever since you
disobeyed the director's orders and got demoted.

Tenma: No... it's okay.

- Page 93 -

Tenma: In fact, I feel refreshed.

This is much better than being caught up in all the
politics.
I've been able to get back to my most important job
as a doctor: saving lives.

Becker: Well look at you. You sure changed your morals

around.
If you changed factions from the director to the
board chairman,
you'd get crushed, with the influence the director's
got now.
Or will you turn into an inter-faction spy? Heheheh.

Tenma: No, I...

I've had enough of that.

Becker: That's the spirit! We really ARE on the same

team, now.
It's a comfy job. No one's got you tied up, no one's
expecting anything outta ya...

- Page 94 -

Becker: No hope for promotion, that's all! Hahaha!

Pager: (beep beep)

Tenma: You'll have to excuse me, I have a call...

Becker: You still working, so tired?

You were their number one young doctor, and a genius,
and now they treat you like a resident trainee.
All that hard work, down the drain.

Tenma: (click)(click)

- Page 95 -

Oppenheim: Look at all these presents and letters of

encouragement, sir...

Boyer: There's a mountain of them in his sister's room.

Oppenheim: Naturally, the amount is thanks to the media

using this story of twin siblings losing their parents as
a tear-jerker.

Boyer: These are the worst patients: the ones who can't
even be expected to pay their bills.
All the police coming in and out are disturbing the
other patients, too.

Oppenheim: And that's not all.

There's a possibility the people who killed their
parents were terrorists. They may try to take out the
children while they're still being kept here.
What a pain.

Heinemann: It's not so bad.

- Page 96 -
Oppenheim: Huh?

Heinemann: There's nothing wrong with a "tear-jerker," is

there? We'll get more attention... Which means the
children DO have worth.
Am I right?

Boyer: Y... yes, sir.

Heinemann: (click)
By the way, has the director from Roemer Hospital in
Frankfurt said anything yet?

Oppenheim: Yes, the arrangements are complete. He said he

will support you in the election for the next German
Medical Association chairman.

Heinemann: Hmm... Now I have to push Dr. Geitel at

Munich's Nordwest General Hospital...
He should be in my pocket already, though...

Oppenheim: Yes. He's already shown his favor.

Heinemann: Good. Tell me of anything that might be

necessary.

- Page 97 -

Heinemann: Oh, yes. How about this idea?

Oppenheim: Pardon?

Heinemann: We'll present a photo of the two children

together to the media...

Oppenheim: Ah, yes... They've been repeatedly requesting

pictures of the two...

Heinemann: Very well. Give them one.

A picture of two lonely siblings, alive and well
under our kind nursing.
A perfect reminder of the prestige and quality of
Eisler Memorial Hospital.

Boyer: V-very good, sir, but the doctor in attendance has

said it is too early to allow the two children to see
each other...
Heinemann: Who is it?

Boyer: Dr. Tenma.

- Page 98 -

Heinemann: Remove him. (crumple)

Oppenheim: Sir?

Heinemann: He does not deserve so much attention. (rip)

Remove Dr. Tenma from care of this patient.

Oppenheim: Yes, sir.

Heinemann: A present from the caring citizens of this

town.
How about you?

Oppenheim: Thank you, sir.

- Page 99 -

Tenma: How do you feel, Mrs. Hankel?

Hankel: Thank you, Dr. Tenma.

I feel wonderful, thanks to you.

Tenma: Soon we'll be able to take your stitches out, and

then you can leave soon afterwards.

Hankel: Then I can go home.

Tenma: Yes, as long as you follow my directions and get

plenty of rest.

Hankel: I thought I would never be able to see my

grandchildren again. Thank you, Doctor.

Tenma: Prescribe Mrs. Hankel regular anticonvulsives and

hypotensives...

Voice: Eeeeeek!!

- Page 100 -

Doctors: Get her outside!!

Lay her on a gurney!!
- Page 101 -

Tenma: W...
What are you doing?!

Doctor: Uh... Dr. Tenma...

Nurse: We... we let her see her brother. And then...

She screamed,
and fainted!!

Tenma: W...
Why did you let them see each other?!

- Page 102 -

Tenma: Dr. Boyer, what is the meaning of this? What is

that camera...

Boyer: Right...
We thought we'd catch their moving reunion on camera.
To show to the media.

Tenma: On whose authorization did you do this?

I am the doctor in attendance here.

Boyer: You have been removed from care of this boy.

Tenma: What...?

Boyer: I am in charge here from now on. I decided it

would be all right to have them meet.

- Page 103 -

Tenma: Don't you dare...

Don't turn these children into some kind of
exhibition!!

Boyer: Director's orders. I think it would be in your

self-interest not to disobey him any more.

Tenma: You... YOU were the ones who tried to abandon

him!!
You were the ones who gave preference to the mayor's
life!!
And now you're trying to use this boy to save image
when the mayor didn't work out?!
I SAVED HIM!! I have a responsibility to take care of
him until he is well!!

Boyer: Why don't you take a look at the boy's response,

then?!

- Page 104 -

- Page 105 -

Boyer: The moment he saw his sister, he held out his hand
and started crying.
Clearly, he's come to his senses and given a positive
response, as you can see for yourself.
In other words, your surgery was a great success.
Good job.
Your work here is now over.
Now get back to your position. Chief's orders.

Tenma: But...

- Page 106 -

Tenma: (click)(click)
Eva...

- Page 107 -

Tenma: Eva...

Norden: Hey, sorry for making you wait!

Tenma: Huh...

Eva: You're late, Dr. Norden...

Norden: I'm sorry, one of my patients said he couldn't

sleep.

Eva: Now you're going to have to go shopping with me for

punishment, Robert.

Norden: Please, dear, go easy on me.

- Page 108 -

Tenma: (wobble)
Screw 'em all!!
I wuzn't wrong!!
All of 'em! All of 'em!!
They're ALL a buncha MONEY and STATUS WHORES!!
Director's order my ass!!
Chief's order my ass!!
Goddammit!! (wobble)

- Page 109 -

Tenma: I...
I wasn't...
I wasn't wrong...

Eva: How about some tea?

Norden: No, I'll be fine for today.

Eva: Oh come on, come in and see my father.

Father, Dr. Norden's here!!
Father?
Father, are you in your room?

- Page 110 -

Dr. Oppenheim? Dr. Boyer?
Are you still having a meeting, at this hour?

- Page 111 -

Nurse: Gasp...
Eeeeeek!!

Eva: (knock knock)

Father? Are you asleep already?
I'm coming in.

- Page 112 -
