EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Banana Wais Kabutehan Project is a project founded from the idea of wise (“wais” in Filipino
term) waste management of banana peels and mushroom (“Kabute” in Filipino term) culture production
for the greater good (“kabutihan” in Filipino term) of the communtiy.

The project proposal specifically targets Purok 16 Ilaboon, Barangay Maniki, Municipality of
Kapalong, Davao del Norte. It is a part of the largest producing-banana region, with a population of 304
consisting of 77 families. Most families are poverty stricken that depend on banana peeling and drying
for income. The banana peels from the Banana Peelers Community (BAPECO) however are just left to rot
in the vacant government owned area where they also dry the banana peeled. With the continuous
operation throughout the years, tons of banana peels are now piled up causing insufficient ground area
for drying and dumping space for the subsequent truckloads of banana to be peeled. In actual fact,
some are even thrown in the nearby river as well as in the drainage canals. This situation has been
causing increase number of pests and insects too.

Thus, this project proposal is a response to the problem of the community on waste disposal
through provision of proper dumping facility and processing facility wherein banana peel wastes are
converted into something more beneficial which are the mushroom beds for mushroom culture.
PROJECT BACKGROUND:

Banana is the leading fruit grown in the Philippines and a consistent top dollar earner. The prospect of
Philippine bananas in the domestic and foreign market is still promising. Davao Region (XI) is known to
have the largest banana production in the Philippines. It has attained the highest production with
3,854,835 MT with Davao del Norte as one of the top three provinces (DA, 2013).

One of the municipalities of Davao del Norte that is producing bananas for years is Kapalong.
Specifically, in Purok 16 Ilaboon, Barangay Maniki, Municipality of Kapalong, a banana plantation is
providing work for people living near the area as “banana peelers”. The crops grown around the area
are banana and corn, but the main source of the wastes is coming from banana. Before, the banana
peels were collected and given to a private organization for making vermi culture. Some were also for
sale to a company for Php2/kg as a raw material for mosquito coil (aka katol). However, it had been
years now that the collection had stopped.

There is an estimated of 5 truckloads a day of bananas to be peeled, and an estimated of 700-

800 kgs per load. A total of 77 families depend their daily needs on the the work that the plantation is
providing them. However, the banana wastes are thrown in an open area (which is owned by the
government) where the workers and their families are situated. The improper disposal of the banana
wastes have come to our attention. There were flooding due to clogging of canals. Also, diseases in
banana plantation become rampant as there is an apparent increase of pest and insects existence.

With this current dilemma, 3 different analysis were undertaken, namely: Stakeholder Analysis,
SWOT Analysis, and Problem Analysis, to provide the best solution – and the proponents had come up
with converting these wastes into something beneficial to all the families in the said community. This
situation harbors opportunities for the people living near the area. The proposed project will provide
not just a solution to the improper waste management problem but also provides opportunity for an
additional. The project will likewise motivate the banana peelers to participate more meaningfully in
strengthening their community. The proponents believe that the project is essential and is an
appropriate action for all stakeholders involved.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

After undergoing a series of analysis on the area, it had been found out that the community
produced tons of banana peels as wastes which are just improperly discarded. In fact, the community
faces dilemma on clogged canals, rampant existence of insects and pests due to the unmanageable
waste disposal of peels after peeling bananas to dry. Also, families in the said community belong to the
poorest families in the Municipality of Kapalong with only peeling and drying banana for main earnings
according to the census conducted by LGU, 2017.

In order to address the problems aforementioned, proponents proposed that the banana peels
be utilized as mushroom beds for profitability instead of being a risk to health, a drainage problem, and
as an area pollutant that abridged space for drying. Also, the project shall introduce a new livelihood
program which is mushroom culture for the 77 families’ additional income.

PROJECT GOAL AND OBJECTIVES:

The goal and objectives of the Project shall be as follows:

Goal

After two to three (2-3) years, beneficiaries will have an additional and sustainable income. In
addition, banana peels will be properly disposed at the catchment facility for utilization, eradicating the
problem brought by the unmanageable banana peels waste from the community.

Objectives

1. By end of the project, participating BAPECO members will be skillful on mushroom culture and
on converting banana peels into mushroom beds;
2. By end of the project, participating BAPECO members will have 40% increase in income from

mushroom culture production;

3. By end of project, all banana peels from the BAPECO members will be disposed in the facility

for utilization into mushroom beds, and therefore no more banana peel waste discarded in

any drainage areas or in the surrounding area; and

4. By the end of the project, solidarity, sustainability, and environmental health of communities

are enhanced.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES:

The project will cover the poverty-stricken Banana Peelers Community in the Municipality of

Kapalong , Purok 16 Ilaboon of Barangay Maniki. It will irectly benefit a population of 304 with 77

families. This is at least for the initial operation of the project. It can be assumed those who are not

covered by the project, can still benefit from the project, by learning the technology and methods

adopted.
PROJECT OUTPUTS AND IMPACTS:

The following are the outputs that shall be attained at the completion of the project:
1. Storage and Processing facility.
2. Mushroom beds made from banana peels.
3. Marketable high quality mushroom produce.

Impacts

Social Impact

The project will be implemented in such a way that poor families will be given the opportunity
to have an additional sustainable income at the least cost as possible. The selection of beneficiaries shall
prioritize those mostly deprived families of BAPECO but can sustain and act on the responsibilities
expected from them. In the long run, these beneficiaries shall have the chance to improve their living
condition expected from the economic benefits of mushroom culture.

Economic Impact

This utilization of banana peels into mushroom beds project, in the long run, would provide beneficiaries
with better economic gains as it operates on its own pass-on cycles. This will provide beneficiaries with
more stable cash inflows as the propagation of mushroom culture becomes self-sustaining. Increase in
income would stimulate economic growth in the municipality as this will lead to increased expenditures
for goods and services, thereby promoting healthy economic backward and forward linkages in the
municipality. The project will also support in expanding the supply-base of mushrooms in the province
of Davao del Norte.

Environmental Impact

Utilizing banana peels into a profitable cause instead of as unbeneficial waste in the long run
would help the community become environmentally sustainable. With this project, discarding the
banana peels into the rivers or canals or waiting for the peels to rot for such a long period of time
everywhere would be avoided. This proper waste management disposal practice would then help
prevent natural disasters such as flash floods and even the rampant existence of pest and mosquitoes
that would be harmful for the people’s health and the crops planted near along like corn and bananas.
