1. After selecting the part, choose Thermoelectric Component as the

material type.
type

2. There are several manufacturer-supplied components to choose from, or

define the device with the Material Editor.

3. A TEC Surface is needed as part of the material definition—this is the

sensing location for the device
device. It is the location for either the target cold
or target hot temperature.

Problem Solutions

• A rigorous N-S solution is

sometimes
ti overkill
kill ffor ttrend
d Quick Forced
identification early in the design – Very fast solution technique
process. – Assumes inviscid, incompressible
– Typically finished in 1 (one) iteration
• Natural Convection solution time – Automatically computes empirical film
is often too long for upfront coefficients, and solves for the heat transfer
design study process

Quick Natural/Free
– Runs a small number of flow and thermal
iterations together
– Then computes and applies film coefficients
– And then continues as a thermal-only analysis,
neglecting the surrounding fluid
Quick Convection: Natural/Free

Quick Natural/Free quickly gets results for buoyancy-driven flows.

Quick Convection: Forced

Flow and heat results in a few iterations!

Usage: Quick Solvers

• The Quick Solvers are controlled with check boxes on the

Options/Analyze task.

• Clicking Quick Forced will cause a potential flow solution to be generated

followed by a heat transfer analysis:
– Boundary layers, viscosity, wakes are all ignored
– Film coefficients are empirically calculated
– Takes a few iterations

• Clicking Concept Natural/Free will enable natural convection automation

– Flow and thermal are run for a number of iterations
– Film coefficients are computed automatically and flow is turned off
– The duration of the solution is run as thermal-only using the film coefficients
and starting temperature distribution
Cavitation Prediction
Cavitation

Problem
• Cavitation is a physical phenomenon that occurs in many high high-velocity
velocity liquid flows. It
occurs when the liquid pressure falls below the vapor pressure, and vapor bubbles
appear in the liquid.
• Accurate prediction of cavitation and its affects are vital for accurate device
characterization for many in the valve and pump industries.

Solution
• CFdesign Cavitation (Physical Model) Prediction
– Predicts the onset and location (but does not show bubble formation)
– Accurate computation of pressure and wall forces where cavitation occurs

cavitation levels
Usage: Cavitation

I. Check the Cavitation box on the Options/Analyze dialog

I. Model is best suited to predicting location of bubble formation.
II. If cavitation region is very large, the solution may go unstable.
