The document is a machine design exam containing 5 questions about mechanical engineering concepts like shaft design, couplings, clutches, bearings, and v-belt drive sizing. It includes tables of standard shaft and key dimensions. The exam tests understanding of power transmission component design, stress analysis, and calculations for load determination, size selection, cooling requirements, and lubrication needs. Students are asked to solve applied problems involving the mechanical design and analysis of common machine elements.

6th SEMESTER SUPPLEMENTRY EXAMINATION 2017 OF 13-14 BATCHES Dated: 10-08-2017 Time allowed:-03 Hour Max. Marks = 60 Note : ATTEMPT ALL QUESTIONS. Assume any missing data. Marks Question No. 01. (a) Discuss the various types of shafts and the standard sizes of transmission shafts. [03] (b) A mild steel shaft transmits 20 Kw at 200 r.p.m. It carries a central load of 900 N and [09] is simply supported between the bearings 2.5 meters apart. Determine the size of the shaft, if the allowable shear stress is 42 MPa and the maximum tensile or compressive stress is not to exceed 56 Mpa. What size of the shaft will be required, if it is subjected to gradually applied loads? Take the value of Km and Kt for rotating shafts with gradually applied loads as 1.5 and 1.0 respectively. 02. Design a cast iron protective type flange coupling to transmit 15 kW at 900 r.p.m. [12] from an electric motor to a compressor. The service factor may be assumed as 1.35. The following permissible stresses may be used : Shear stress for shaft, bolt and key material = 40 MPa Crushing stress for bolt and key = 80 MPa Shear stress for cast iron = 8 MPa 03. (a) What is a clutch? Why it is necessary to dissipate the heat generated when clutches operate? [03] (b) A centrifugal clutch is to be designed to transmit 15Kw at 900 r.p.m. the shoes are [09] four in number. The speed at which the engagement begins is ¾ th of the running speed. The inside radius of the pulley rim is 150 mm. The shoes are lined with Ferrodo for which the coefficient of friction may be taken as 0.25. Determine: (i) Weight of the shoe, and (ii) Size of the shoes. 04. (a) What are rolling contact bearings? Discuss their advantages over sliding contact Bearing. [03] (b) A full journal bearing of 50 mm diameter and 100 mm long has a bearing pressure of [09] 1.4 N/mm2 . The speed of the journal is 900 r.p.m and the ratio of journal diameter to the diameteral clearance is 1000. The bearing is lubricated with oil whose absolute viscosity at the operating temperature of 75C may be taken as 0.011 Kg/m-s. The room temperature is 35 . Find: (i) The amount of artificial cooling require, and (ii) The mass of the lubricating oil required; if the difference between the outlet and inlet temperature of oil is 10 C. Take specific heat of the oil as 1850 J/Kg/C and heat dissipation coefficient = 280 W/m2/C 05. A compressor, requiring 90 Kw, is to run at about 250 r.p.m. The drive is by V-belts [12] from an electric motor running at 750 r.p.m. The diameter of the pulley on the compressor shaft must not be greater than 1 meter while the center distance between the pulleys is limited to 1.75 meter. The belt speed should not exceed 1600 m/min. Determine the number of V-belts required transmitting the power, if each belt has a cross-sectional area of 375 mm2, density 1000 Kg/m3 and an allowable tensile stress of 2.5 Mpa. The groove angle of the pulley is 35.The coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.25. Calculate also the length require for each belt.
