Define Utilitarianism: It is the principle which states everyone is treated alike and

assumes the duration and intensity of pleasure and pain can be quantified and
measured. Utilitarian believe that one should always act to produce the greatest good
for the greatest number.
Objects influenced:
 Unocal company
 Investor: Total, Thailand's PTT, MOGE (Burmese government)
 The Karen (the minority of Burmese people)
 The local people who live in the surrounding the pipeline construction.
After the careful consideration, we, the Unocal decides to continue to work on the
project
Answer:
Base on the ethics of utilitarianism that produce greatest happiness for everyone. In
this case, there are to two affairs which needs to evaluate the consequence when
taking action: the profitable group and the group may be harmed. For the Burmese
people and the country, itself, we believe that our company project provides such
conditions as economic growth, encouragement of the policy of opening up foreign
investment in Myanmar, reduction in unemployment rate. For the investors, the
project brings the profits. For the minority, the project creates jobs, yet also causes
pain as some of them suffers from human rights abuse. Thus, the people benefit from
the pleasure of project in the long run is larger than the people suffer from the pain.
Solution:
As a utilitarian, our company will have some following conditions provided for the
Burmese people to reduce the pain:
1. There will be compensation for the Burmese people (the Karen and minority) who live
in the surrounding areas of the project through building a new living infrastructure.
We will help them with their relocation including finding new accommodation and
build houses.
2. The Burmese people are able to work for the project and receive salaries as official
workers. As official workers, they will benefit from the welfare of the company to be
more specific insurance and healthcare.
3. As the project develops, Unocal will provide the Burmese people with facilities and
infrastructure to improve their lives and living standards.
4. Unocal will increase the stake held by the Burmese government from 15% to 17%
from Unocal stake to eliminate force (imprisonment, execution) in the progress of the
project by mentioning the conditions for the Burmese people, reducing the conflicts
between the government and the people. This solution aims to protects the human
rights of minority and their safety. If the government refused to abide the agreement,
the Unocal vow to immediately cancel the project.
5. Unocal will put forward a committee to ease and solve the conflicts between the
government and the local people affected by the project. Any injustice cases will be
listened and settled by the representative of Unocal.
