2018
Over the last 11 years, Michael Page has developed a market leading position within the recruitment sector resulting in a total headcount of over 40 employees and a management
team with more than 100 years of PageGroup experience.
Despite the ongoing mix of good and bad news that we have experienced over the past 3 years (more bad than
good unfortunately!), Michael Page has recorded its 3 strongest results in this time, and like most South Africans,
we like to approach the future with a positive and optimistic mindset. The majority of our clients now believe that
2018 will be a continuation of the current market, with some sectors expecting solid growth while others are
forecasting flat trading conditions.
Drilling down into individual sectors, it is pleasing to see the Financial Services sector maintaining its need
to hire top talent, not just in the form of bankers and accountants, but also support functions like IT, Digital
and HR. FMCG and Retail organisations are also on the rebound when it comes to hiring requirements, and
surprisingly mining services related companies continue to be active for niche talent or senior staff. There is also
the continued investment from multinational firms across a variety of industry sectors who are investing or setting
up in South Africa. Finally, the IT & Telco, Industrial and 3PL / Supply Chain sectors all point towards maintaining
their human capital needs.
The Sub Saharan African region also has a significant impact on recruitment needs in South Africa, with many
head offices based mainly in Johannesburg or Cape Town. Whether it is management level positions based in
South Africa or technical / niche roles which are based here but travel extensively in the region, the growth
of these markets are helping to fuel the South African labour market. Finally, salaries and bonuses tend to
have followed a consistent pattern over the past 5 years with steady increases to reflect inflationary pressures.
Like any labour market, there are a number of profiles and skills who are able to demand ’above market’
remunerations due to a low supply of such talent.
