LECTURE 01
INTRODUCTION
What is Plumbing??
Origin of the word Plumbing:
The word derived from the Latin for Lead
(PLUMBUM) as the first effective Pipes used in
the roman era were made from lead.
The IPC-2015 definition of Plumbing
System:
A system that includes the water distribution
pipes; plumbing fixtures and traps; water-treating
or water-using equipment; soil, waste and vent
pipes; and building drains; in addition to their
respective connections, devices and
appurtenances within a structure or premises;
and the water service, building sewer and
building storm sewer serving such structure or
premises [IPC-2015-CH2].
Building Plumbing Systems:
1. Building Water Supply System:
A. Potable Water Supply System.
a. Cold Water Supply.
b. Hot Water Supply.
c. Tempered Water Supply.
d. Chilled Drinking Water Supply.
e. Irrigation Water Supply.
B. Non-Potable Water Supply System.
a. Flushing Water Supply.
b. Non-Potable Irrigation Water Supply.
2. Building Drainage System:
A. Sanitary Drainage System.
a. Soil Drainage System.
b. Waste Drainage System.
c. Combined Sanitary System.
B. Storm Water Drainage.
C. Combined Sanitary and Storm Drainage system.
1. Building Water Supply System
A. Potable Water supply System:
POTABLE WATER: Water free from impurities
present in amounts sufficient to cause disease or
harmful physiological effects and conforming to the
bacteriological and chemical quality requirements
of the Public Health Service Drinking Water
Standards or the regulations of the public health
authority having jurisdiction.[IPC-2015-CH2]
a. Cold Water Supply.

It’s the water supply system that supplied

plumbing fixtures with potable water for the
purpose of sanitary from COLD WATER source.

COLD WATER: Water having a temperature is

below 85°F (29°C).
b. Hot Water Supply.
It’s the water supply system that supplied
plumbing fixtures with a potable HOT WATER
for the purpose of sanitary from a hot water
source.

HOT WATER: Water at a temperature greater

than or equal to 110°F (43°C).[IPC-2015-CH2]
 The code does not specify a maximum temperature for hot water;
however, it should be limited to minimize the risk of burn injury
and thermal stress to plumbing system components. The designer,
the installer or the owner has the choice of determining the
temperature.

 Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standard UL 174 for electric

water heaters requires that the temperature regulating thermostat
or control be set at the factory at not greater than 125°F (51.7°C).

 Water temperature below the minimum temperature of 110°F

(43°C) is considered to be either tempered or cold. Care must be
used when installing a system that has temperature capability of
scalding.

[IPC-2015]
c. Tempered Water Supply.
It’s the water supply system that supplied plumbing fixtures
with a potable TEMPERED WATER for the purpose of
sanitary from a (mixed water) source.

TEMPERED WATER. Water having a temperature range

between 85°F (29°C) and 110°F (43°C).[IPC-2015-CH2]

 Tempered water (warm water) is at a temperature suitable

for bathing, hand washing and similar purposes and is
defined as a range between 85°F (29°C) and 110°F (43°C).
d. Chilled Drinking Water Supply.
It’s the water supply system that supplied DRINKING
FOUNTAIN with a potable cooled water for the purpose
of drinking from a (chilled water) source.

DRINKING FOUNTAIN:A plumbing fixture that is

connected to the potable water distribution system and the
drainage system. The fixture allows the user to obtain a
drink directly from a stream of flowing water without the
use of any accessories. [IPC-2015-CH2]

e. Irrigation Water Supply.
It’s the water supply system that provide and
distribute a predetermined amount of water in
order to economically produce and/or maintain
ornamentally shrubs, cultivated lawns, and other
large turf areas. [ASPE-DataBook-V3-CH4]
B. Non-Potable Water Supply System.
It’s a water supply system that supplied NON-POTABLE
WATER for the purpose of FLUSHING or IRRIGATION.

NON-POTABLE WATER: Water not safe for drinking, personal

or culinary utilization.[IPC-2015-CH2]

FLUSHING: cleanse (something, especially a toilet) by causing

large quantities of water to pass through it.[Google-translate]

IRRIGATION: Refer to slide 14

a. Flushing Water Supply.
It’s the water supply system that supplied
fixtures need to be flushed like (water closet,
urinals) with a non-potable water for the purpose
of flushing.
b. Non-Potable Irrigation Water
Supply.
It’s the water supply system that provide and
distribute a predetermined amount of Non-
potable water in order to economically produce
and/or maintain ornamentally shrubs, cultivated
lawns, and other large turf areas.
[ASPE-DataBook-V3-CH4]
2. Building Drainage System
DRAINAGE SYSTEM: Piping within a public or
private premise that conveys sewage, rainwater or
other liquid waste to a point of disposal. A drainage
system does not include the mains of a public sewer
system or a private or public sewage treatment or
disposal plant.[IPC-2015-CH2]
A. Sanitary Drainage System.
A drainage system that carries SEWAGE and excludes STORM,
surface and ground water.[IPC-2015-CH2]

SEWAGE: Any liquid waste containing animal or vegetable

matter in suspension or solution, including liquids containing
chemicals in solution.

 Sewage is the general term referring to the combined discharge

from all plumbing fixtures and primarily includes human bodily
wastes and the wastes associated with cleaning, washing,
bathing and food preparation.
STORM : Refer to slide #
a. Soil Drainage System.
A drainage system that conveys sewage
containing fecal matter to the building drain or
building sewer.[IPC-2015-CH2]

SOIL PIPE: drain pipe that conveys the

discharge of water closets or urinals or any other
fixture that receives human waste.
b. Waste Drainage System.
A drainage system that conveys GRAY WATER to be treated
and reused in the FLUSHING WATER SUPPLY and
IRRIGATION.

GRAY WATER: Waste discharged from lavatories, bathtubs,

showers, clothes washers and laundry trays.[IPC-2015-CH2]

FLUSHING WATER SUPPLY: Refer to slide # 16

IRRIGATION: Refer to slide # 17

c. Combined Sanitary System
A drainage system that conveys {GRAY WATER
and SEWAGE} from sanitary fixtures in
buildings to public or private sewage.

GRAY WATER: Refer to slide # 22.

SEWAGE: Refer to slide # 20
B. Storm Water Drainage
A drainage system that conveys STORM
WATER to the point of disposal.

STORM WATER :Natural precipitation,

including snowmelt, that has contacted a surface
at or below grade.[IPC-2015-CH2]
C. Combined Sanitary and Storm
Drainage System
A drainage system that conveys both SEWAGE
and STORM WATER to the point of disposal.

SEWAGE: Refer to slide # 20

STORM WATER: Refer to slide # 24
