DIY Outdoor Patio Furniture from Pallets

First off I would like to say "Happy Anniversary" to our house. We bought it last year on March 31st and we have
already done a lot of work to it. It's so much fun to work on projects together. My husband is very good at a lot of DIY
projects and he has done some amazing work around our house.

One of my favorite things about our house is the fenced in back yard and patio with a carport roof above. My
husband and I spend many evenings sitting outside on our patio enjoying the Texas weather, before it gets too hot.
We love to entertain, and I had bought a little patio seating set last year but it only seats 4 and most times we have
more people over then that. That's where this project was birthed from and here is how I did it.

What you will need for this project is some creativity a measuring tape, sandpaper possibly paint and of course pallets.
My husband and I found our pallets on Craigstlist from a Coors light plant that ordered the wrong size and were
trying to get rid of them. We got two truck loads of them almost brand new for $20. My husband has used some for
kindling and to stack his firewood on. I used 15 of them for this project and we still have quite a few left for other
projects.

This project cost me $40 total ($10 for the pallets, $25 for the paint and I have a lot leftover, and well say $5 for Blog Archive
sandpaper and nails) If you would like to keep the cost down and like a more rustic look you can cut out the paint. The
total time I spent on this project was probably 6 hours. About 2 hours to figure out my measurements and what I was ►  2015 (14)

The first thing you will need to do is measure your pallets and figure out if you will need to cut them or if you like the
size already. My pallets measured 36"x45" 36" was still a bit wide for trying to sit on so we decided to cut them in half.

To cut in half I used a regular handsaw and cut down the middle to the side of the middle beam. You have to cut both
sides. this is not hard. I did it to all 15 pallets in about an hour.

Here is what it looked like. The part I am going to use is the part on the left. It now measures 36"x24" I cut several
pallets like this. I knew I needed 5 across but I didn't know how many I would need to stack to get the height for the
seat that I wanted.

So I started stacking and I pulled up my patio chair to compare. I decided that three high was just right. So now I
knew I needed 15 whew...time to get busy.

Now to make the backs to them. This is one of the leftover pieces from the pallets I cut earlier.

If your benches are going to be against a wall, simply prop it up against it. The blocks left on the back will help keep it
stable.

I don't have a picture of this but I just took a really long nail and hammered it through the wood blocks all the way to
the pallet beneath.

Now all that's left is to sand it all down. My pallets were pretty rough with a lot of splinters. I just sanded them enough
to get rid of the splinters and smooth it out enough to paint.

Love this clever idea! We use pallets for all sorts of things but hadn't thought of anything like this.

It is a very good idea. I don't have anything to lean my against though and I think I would want the backs a bit sturdier.
Our pallets also come in different sizes so we would have to work with that as well.
So far I have a pallet compost bin, pallet table, pallet duck house, pallet pig house and just this weekend a pallet fence.

If I might have some ideas of where to go look I would follow up on some leads.
I live in mountain home, Arkansas.

I went to craigslist to find mine. Sometimes if a company ordered too many or the wrong size they will sell
them on craigslist for pretty cheap. Here is a link with tips on finding free reclaimed materials.
http://oldworldgardenfarms.com/2012/11/06/6-simple-tips-to-find-free-pallets-and-reclaimed-materials/
They suggest looking at Small Garden and Hardware Stores, Motorcycle Shops, Lawnmower and Power
Equipment stores. I hope you can find some.

I did leave the bottom part because I liked being the look of the pallets. Also it would have taken a really long
time to paint all of them.

I actually don't have any cushions on the pallets. I just bought some outdoor pillows from Home Depot. I
didn't attach the stacked pallets together at all. They seem to stay put just fine on their own. I like this too
because it gives me flexibility if I need to move them around.

It would be really nice if you paint all the crates with bright and vivid colors, just my opinion. I really appreciate your work
in fact I couldn't imagine that crates can be turned into tables and chairs that's really a bright idea I swear! I'm very
grateful that I found your website for this reason I came up with idea for recycling my old crates here in our house and
make something like these.

Not quite as nice as teak outdoor furniture but it still looks great, nonetheless!

My brother saw this and he's been working on making some furniture for our patio. I think he is going to also put some
designs on them as well. I'm not sure what it is going to look like but, I think it will be better than having nothing.

I would love to see some pads on that bench. I love the project but I really like it to be as comfortable as possible. Did you
sand down the pallets before painting them? I noticed you brushed them off but I didn't notice if you sanded it or not.

This is a great patio furniture. My husband and I have been thinking about putting a patio in our backyard. We have
agreed that if we have a patio we would need some furniture to enjoy being outside. I hope that we will be able to find
something that we both agree on. http://www.welskistreasures.com/default.asp?dept_id=46020

they would be willing to try to make something like this.
