CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA
Monthly Report
Public Works Department
December 2017
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
Carmel Beach:
Public Works/Forestry staff continued with weekly beach cleaning by picking up litter and debris that was left
by visitors, washed up on the shore, and deposited by storm water runoff.
North Dunes:
In the North Dunes habitat restoration area, contractor John Ley’s Tree Service began the second phase of
acacia removals along the northern and western boundaries. Debris from the northern boundary was disposed
of through the Hines property on Carmel Way saving considerable time and extra cost. Community feedback
has been very positive as most appear to be enjoying the new, clear views of the sea.
Staff also has been coordinating with the volleyball users to prepare for a minor shift in the courts following
removal of a large tree stump this winter.
Trees:
Public Works/Forestry staff and on-call contractors removed 10 dead or dying trees in the community. John
Ley’s Tree Service continued to water 86 trees planted by the Friends of Carmel Forest.
Tope’s Tree Service completed the second phase of invasive tree removals just south of the Flanders
Mansion. These last tree removals avoided the 16 Dusky-footed woodrat nests that were found in the project
area. Staff is consulting with Nicole Nedeff on the next phase of invasive removals in the Preserve.
The City of Carmel was awarded the maximum $25,000 grant from the Monterey Peninsula Regional Parks
District for improvements within the Mission Trail Nature Preserve. Key factors in the District Board's decision
to award the full grant included having adopted Master Plans for the MTNP, an active Coastal Development
Permit, collaboration with the Friends group, and $50,000 of matching City funds budgeted in the Capital
Improvement Project. Infrastructure that will be addressed include: replacement/relocation of four MTNP entry
signs, new trail signs, replacement of deteriorated wooden fences with new split rail barriers, and other
measures to promote habitat protection and prevent soil erosion. These physical improvements will dovetail
into the City's ongoing invasive tree and plant removal program.
