Course Description: CIVE 3341-01 is a design course that aims at introducing practical structural steel
design. The objective of this course is to provide students with the knowledge to properly design steel
structures and be able to provide proper construction details for their design. Students attending the
class will learn how to design structural steel elements and connections. While the course emphasizes
the concept of load and resistance factors design (LRFD), the ASD design method as adopted by the 14th
edition of AISC is followed. Course examples will cover both LRFD and ASD design.

Prerequisites: Structural Analysis

Required Text:
Steel Design By William T. Segui , Fifth Edition
Manual of Steel Construction, Load and Resistance Factor Design, American Institute of Steel
Construction (AISC), Fourteenth Edition.

Grading:

Binder and Project 15% 100% > A > 90%

Homework 15% 90% > B > 80%
Midterm Exams 35% 80% > C > 70%
Final Exam 35% 65% < D < 70%
F < 65%

Note: If the weighted average of all the exams is less than 65%, the student grade will be D or F .(No
matter if the student obtains complete grade in HW, Binder and Project)

Group study is beneficial and encouraged; however, each student is responsible for completing their
own homework independently. Homework will be collected at the beginning of the class period on the
published date due; late homework will not be accepted. When available, pdf files of problem solutions
will be posted on the blackboard following the due date. Homework must be completed in a legible
manner; work that cannot be easily read and understood will not be graded. Binders will be collected in
the final exam day and should include all of the class materials (e.g. Syllabus, Class notes and slides, HW,
Exams, Project, presentation). Quizzes may be unannounced and cannot be made up and will be part of
homework grade. If you know that you will miss an exam, make arrangements prior to the exam with
the instructor.
Course Outcomes:
By completing this course students shall be able to:

1. Explain principles of LRFD/ASD design methods and compute load and materials factors.
2. Analyze steel trusses and design of tension elements.
3. Explain the elastic and plastic behavior of columns.
4. Design columns subjected to axial loads.
5. Compute stresses in beams due to elastic and plastic analysis.
6. Explain principles of lateral torsional buckling of beams.
7. Design beam-column elements.
8. Design bolted connections.
9. Design welded connections.
10. Compute service stresses in composite sections.
11. Design composite sections.
12. Design of plate girders.

Course Topics:
 Introduction to structural steel design
 Design philosophies
 Design of tension members
 Design of compression members
 Design of flexural members
 Beam-Column design
 Design of simple connections
 Design of composite construction
 Design of plate girders

“Mandatory Course Evaluations period (Apr 15 – May 6): Students are required to complete an ONLINE
evaluation of this course, accessed through your UTPA account (https://my.utpa.edu/); you will be contacted
through email with further instructions. The evaluation window closes at 11:59 pm on May 6th, the last day
of Spring classes. Students who complete their evaluations by May 6th will have priority access to their
grades.”
