Urinary  tract

The  calyces,  renal  pelvis,  ureter  and

bladder  have  the  same  basic
histology  structure  à  ge9ng
thicker  closer  to  the  bladder.
Urogenital  tract  layers

The  mucosa  is  lined  by

stra<fied  transi<onal
epithelium  or  urothelium.
Folded  lamina  propria,
submucosa.

The  muscular  layer
consist  of  interwoven
smooth  muscle  layer.

The  adven00a.
Three  layers  of  urothelium

Single  layer  of  small  basal

cells,  res<ng  on  the  very
thin  basement  membrane

Intermediate  region,  one
to  several  layers  of  more
columnar  cells

Superficial  layer,  very
large,  polyhedral  à
umbrella  cells

Urinary  bladder

Bladder  wall  close  to  urethra   Empty  bladder,  mucosa  is  highly  folded.
Full  bladder,  mucosa  is  pulled,  urothelium
thinner,  umbrella  cells  are  flaEer
Urethra

Tube  that  carries  the  urine  from  the  bladder.

Urethral  mucosa  has  large  longitudinal  folds.
In  men,  two  ducts  for  sperm  join  the  urethra
Schema<c  of  urethra
Penis
Male  urethra

Male  urethra  consist  of  3  segmens:

The  prosta0c  urethra,  3-‐4cm  long,
extend  through  prostate  gland,  lines
by  urothelium

The  membranous  urethra,  short
segment,  passes  through  external
sphincter,  lined  by  stra<fied  and
pseudostra<fied  columnar.

The  spongy  urethra,  15  cm,  within
erec<le  <ssue  of  penis,  lined  by
stra<fied  and  pseudostra<fied
columnar.

Female  urethra

Female  urethra  is

exclusively  a  urinary
organ

A  tube  4  –  5  cm

Lined  by  transi<onal,
then  stra<fied
squamous  epithelium.

The  middle  part  is
surrounded  by  the
external  striated
muscle  sphincter.
