By lunch time, huge. foreboding, dark grey clouds hung over the school. The place suddenly grew dark.

The change in weather conditions caused the students to be bubbling lvith excitement as they huddled
against one another in the classroom. Some of them ran out the classroom jtrst to look at the clouds

outside. Teachem were busy trshering them inside. Anxious looks were on the faces of all the teachers,
including rne. I looked at thern waiting anxiously to squeal at the first flash of lightning and peal of
thunder. Sooq large pellels of rain began to fall all over the compound. Students began to sqtreal with
delight. "lvliss. just uow there will be thtrnder and lightning!" they shouted. "Yes. students," I replied.
"Please calm down. I am sure that yotr will be sent home after this downpour."

Surely enough, thunder began to roll, lightning flashed and I cotrld not coutain their excitement. Squeals
10 ofdelight echoedthroughoutthe school atthe sound ofevery peal ofthuuder and flash oflightning. The
Vice Principal, Miss Hayes appealed to the sttrdents to calm down. Her voice boomed through the public
address system.

That announcement only served to heighten the mood of excitement in the school. Then the raitt begau to
drunr heavily onto the roof of the school building. The drumming grew louder and louder and ottt of the
15 gtrttering poured lalge volumes of water into the drains, rvhich soon ovetflorved onto the paveurent of the
school. Soon, the car park was flooded as water flowed from the roadlvay into the school's courpouud.
The water frorn the road and from the roof began to fill the schoolyard and a lrttge pool of w'ater began to
fonn in the car park. Teachers ran out of the staffrootn and got into flreir cars and atternpted to park
them on the school's pavement. Such an action ttrmed ottt to be a fiasco as the cars with smoother tires
20 slippeC back into the drain.

Children beganto scream, "The school is flooding!" The screams weren't ones of terror. Rather, they
were indicative of delight. I shook my head. I cotrldn't believe that they could be deliglrted at something
so destructive as a thunderstorm. The teachers who rlere in the staff l'oom walked otrto the paventents,
i which contained tiny ripples of rvater that over{lorved from the flood in the yard. They came to tell us
