Grading Information (from our Math 103 syllabus)

There will be six chapter tests. In lieu of one of the six chapter tests a corresponding
chapter project/application can be submitted. For instance you can replace the Chapter 5 test
with a Chapter 5 project/application but you could not replace the Chapter 5 test with any
other chapter project/application. Your best 5 scores will count towards your course grade.
Each of those 5 test scores will be worth 14% of the final grade. There will also be a
comprehensive final exam that will be worth 30% of the final grade.

Note:
If you take the option to replace one of your chapter test grades with the corresponding
chapter application, you must submit that chapter application by Thursday, the 6th of March,
2014. Acceptable means of delivering that chapter application is in class or leave it with a
field representative at the UMUC office during their normal business hours (note that they
close at 5 pm on weekdays, and they are closed on weekends and holidays). If no chapter
application is turned in by the 6th of March, then your best 5 chapter test scores (along with
your score on the final exam) will be used in the computation of your grade for this course as
described in the paragraph above.

Problem #1 is worth 5 points and all others are worth 10 points each.

A pizzeria is faced with many numerical problems. A mathematician

will be hired to resolve problems that they encounter. All
applicants for the position must complete the following
questionnaire. You are an applicant.

1. Bread should be baked at 3500F. Using the conversion formula,

C = 95 ( F - 32) , how many degrees Celsius should the oven be to
bake bread?

Bread should be baked at 3500 F.

The required graph is,

3. An expression used to determine how many cups of flour are

needed to make dough is: 4(5d – 3) – 2(d – 7). Simplify
this expression.

4 ( 5d - 3) - 2 ( d - 7 ) = 20d - 12 - 2d + 14
= 18d + 2
4. The owner of the pizzeria is enrolled in a math course and
does his/her homework during lulls. He/she needs assistance
with the following problem: 7(3x + 5) – x = 5x + 5

Solve this problem.

7(3x + 5) - x = 5x + 5

7. The average revenue generated from the sale of each pizza is
$5. It costs the pizzeria an average of $1.50 to make each
pizza. The pizzeria also has fixed costs (utilities, wages,
etc) of $300 each month. How many pizzas made and sold will
generate profits for the pizzeria?

Average revenue per pizza = $5.0

Average cost per pizza = $1.5
Average cost = $300
let x is the number of pizzas made and sold to profits for the pizzeria,

9. This pizzeria had an opening day with the sale of 50 pizzas.

Each day since then they have averaged an increase of 8
pizzas per day. A competitor to this pizzeria that also
opened on the same day, had an opening day sale of 200 pizzas
but has been experiencing a steady decline of an average of 2
pizzas per day. When will the two pizzerias have the same
amount of pizza sales?

Let x be the number of days the two pizzerias will have the same amount
of pizza sales. x can be obtained by solving the following equation:
50 + 8 x = 200 - 2 x
8 x + 2 x = 200 - 50
10 x = 150
x = 15

Therefore, after 15 days the two pizzerias will have the same
amount of pizza sales.

10. A delivery scooter cost $1000. The value of the scooter

depreciates $20 per month. After how many months will the
scooter be worth only the price of a 5 topping pizza, which
is $10?

Let x be the number of months will the scooter be worth only the price of a
5 topping pizza, which is $10. x can be obtained by solving the
following equation:
1, 000 - 20 x = 10
-20 x = 10 - 1, 000
-20 x = -900
x = 45

Therefore, after 45 months will the scooter be worth only the

price of a 5 topping pizza, which is $10.

11. An egg is tossed from a height of 6 feet with an initial

velocity that is not specified, but the path of the egg forms
an arc described by the equation: y = -2x2 + x + 6, where y is
the height in feet and x is the time in seconds. When will
the egg hit the ground? That is, solve: 0 = -2x2 + x + 6.

-2 x 2 + x + 6 = 0
-2 x 2 + 4 x - 3 x + 6 = 0
-2 x ( x - 2 ) - 3 ( x - 2 ) = 0
( x - 2 ) ( -2 x - 3) = 0
x - 2 = 0 or - 2 x - 3 = 0

Problem #1 is worth 5 points and all others are worth 10 points each.
Some of the data for this chapter application was obtained from the Florida
Marine Research Institute and The Everglades National Park Service.

Use the graph below to answer the following questions.

1. Interpret the meaning of the point for 1994. (Count the points from the
left most to the right most and 1994 is the fourth point from the left.)

The point for 1994 is approximately (70,49). It means in 1994 it is

observed that 49 Manatee deaths from 7,000,000 registered boats.

2. Given that the slope of the SLR (simple linear regression) line shown
on the graph below is 2.3,
a) find the linear equation of this line.

The linear equation of this line is y = -110 + 2.3x

b) interpret the meaning of 2.3 in the context of the manatees and

registered boats.

For an increase of 10,000 boats(1 Unit) registered, the manatees

deaths increase by 2.3.

3. Based on the SLR equation, estimate the number of manatee deaths from
boats if there are 780,000 (which is 78 tens of thousands) registered
boats. Note: if you were unable to answer #2a, then use the graph to
make your estimate.

The Manatee Park Reserve rents rowboats to tourists. The cost y to

maintain the rowboats is a function of the number of rowboats x and is
given by the equation: 3x – y = -10.

4. Find the x-intercept and the y-intercept.

The x-intercept and the y-intercept:
3x - y = -10
x y
+ =1
( -10 3) 10
 x-intercept = -10 3 and y-intercept = 10

5. Find the slope.

Slope is 3.

6. Graph the equation.

The Manatee Park Reserve collects a revenue as a function of the number of

rowboats x rented and is given by, R(x) = 5x + 2, or y = 5x + 2.
Using this equation together with the cost equation, which was
3x – y = -10, do the following:

7. Solve the system of equations by the substitution method.

Solve the system of equations by the substitution method:

y = 5 x + 2  ( 1)
3 x - y = -10 ( 2 )
Substitute y = 5 x + 2 in ( 2 )
3 x - 5 x - 2 = -10
-2 x = -10 + 2
-2 x = -8
x=4
Substitute x = 4 in ( 1) y = 5 ( 2 ) + 2 = 12
( x, y ) = ( 4,12 ) is the required solution.
8. Solve the system of equations by the addition method.
Solve the system of equations by the substitution method:
y = 5 x + 2  -5 x + y = 2  ( 1)
3 x - y = -10 ( 2 )
Add ( 1) & ( 2 )
-5 x + y = 2
3x - y = -10
-2 x = -8
x=4
Substitute x = 4 in ( 1) y = 5 ( 2 ) + 2 = 12
( x, y ) = ( 4,12 ) is the required solution.

The following temperatures (measured at the bottom of the Everglades) in

degrees Celsius and the corresponding conductivity, which is specific
conductance (and it has a very high correlation with salinity) were
randomly selected from a large chart of recordings and are presented below.
Use this information to answer the following.

2. A random selection of recent earthquakes revealed the following information

regarding the Richter scale readings of the magnitudes.

a) State the modal magnitude. That is, state the mode.

4.2

b) State the median magnitude.

3.7

c) State the mean magnitude.

3.8

d) State the standard deviation in the magnitudes.

0.5228

3. The magnitudes recorded from a recent random selection of earthquakes

are depicted below. Use this information to answer parts a-d.
Magnitudes
(classes) Frequencies
2.5 to 2.9 1
3.0 to 3.4 3
3.5 to 3.9 4
4.0 to 4.4 6
4.5 to 4.9 1

a) State the class width for this frequency distribution.

0.50

b) State the first class's lower limit and the first class's upper
limit.

2.45

c) What percent of the earthquakes have a magnitude between 4 and 4.4?

6
= 0.4 = 40%

d) Construct a histogram for this distribution of magnitudes.

4. The times taken by students to complete chapter tests appear to be

normally distributed with a mean of 47 minutes and a standard
deviation of 8 minutes.
a) What percentage of students take less than 30 minutes to complete a
chapter test?

1.68%

b) What percentage of students take between 30 and 60 minutes to

complete a chapter test?

93.11%

c) What percentage of students take more than 60 minutes to complete a

chapter test?

5.21%

d) For our Spring Session 1 classes of 2014, the Chapter 5 Test had a
mean of about 92 points with a standard deviation of 10.5 points.
For the Chapter 6 Test we had a mean of about 90 and standard
deviation of about 11, and for the Chapter 7 Test we had a mean of
about 83.6 with a standard deviation of about 16.8. On which of
these chapter tests did you do the best with respect to your
classmates who took those tests? Support your answer with
numerical calculations.

For this problem we need scores of all the students in the class
who took tests on Chapters 5, 6, and 7. So not possible to solve.

5. Let's say five people took the Chapter 12 Test. The following data was
collected, where the test scores are in tens of points. For example,
9.5 tens = 95.
Test Score Hours Studied
x y .
6.5 2
7.5 3
8.0 4
9.0 4
9.5 7

a) Construct a scatter plot for this data.

b) Which of the following is true regarding the coefficient of
correlation, r: negative, positive, undefined, or zero? Why?

Correlation is positive, since the points are increasing from left

to right.

c) Give an estimate of the value of the coefficient of correlation.

r = 0.8955

d) The equation of the regression line is: y = 1.4x – 7.37

If someone studied for six hours, then what would be the predicted
score for this person on the Chapter 12 Test?

y = 1.4x – 7.37, find the value of y when x = 6.

y = 1.4(6) – 7.37 = 1.03
