1. Electric current carrying capacity

This study was based on the following assumptions:

•The maximum conductor temperature: +90ºC.
•Mutual heating due to the presence of other cables/heat sources laid on the vicinity was
not considered
• Temperature and soil conditions as per Figure 1.
• Depth at the centre of the trefoil: 1100 mm.

The electric current rating was calculated in accordance to the IEC standard 287 –
Calculation of the continuous current rating of cables (100% load factor)).
The current carrying capacity is given by:

Δθ  WD 0.5 T1  T 3  T 4 
I
R T1  (1  λ) (T 3  T 4 )
Where:
: temperature difference between the conductor and surrounding soil (K)
WD: dielectric losses (W/m)
T1: Thermal resistance between the conductor and the metallic screen (K.m/W)
T3: Thermal resistance of the external serving of the cable (K.m/W)
T4: Thermal resistance between the cable outer surface and the surrounding medium
(K.m/W)
R: Alternating current resistance of the conductor at 90ºC (/m)
: Ratio of the losses in the metallic screen to the total losses in all the conductors in that
cable.

T=1.5 K.m/W
=1 5 K m/W
