THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CAIMITO (Chrysophyllum cainito Linn.

) BARK EXTRACT AS AN
ORGANIC PESTICIDE FOR TOMATO PLANT

INTRODUCTION

The following partners of this research project entitled “The effectiveness of Caimito

(Chrysophyllum cainito Linn.) Bark Extract as an Organic Pesticide for Tomato Plant” are the

Department of Agriculture (DOA), the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA), the Department

of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the Department of Education (DEPED).

The Department of Agriculture is the executive department of the Philippine government

responsible for the promotion of agricultural and fisheries development and growth. For this

reason, this research about using caimito bark as an organic pesticide could help the agency for

agricultural developments like making an industrialized organic pesticide using caimito bark and

disseminating to various crop farms in the country to reduce the use of chemical-based

pesticides.

Moreover, the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority is a government agency responsible for

assuring adequate supply of fertilizer and pesticide at reasonable prices; rationalizing the

manufacture and marketing of fertilizer; protecting the public from the risks of the inherent use

of pesticides; and educating the agricultural sector in the use of these inputs. The research project

could be beneficial to this agency as it will promote organic use of pesticide through caimito

bark to protect the environment from harmful effects of chemical-based pesticides, which is one

of the main objectives of FPA.

On the other hand, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is the executive

department of the Philippine government responsible for governing and supervising the

exploration, development, utilization, and conservation of the country's natural resources. Thus,

this research project could help DENR to discover new organic ingredient for pesticide which is

caimito bark and help them to deplete the pervasive effects of chemical-based pesticides to the

environment.

Furthermore, the Department of Education, which is the executive department of the

Philippine government responsible for ensuring access to, promoting equity in, and improving

the quality of basic education, could also promote the utilization of caimito bark extract as an

organic pesticide in various schools in the country. This research project could also help the

education sector for the reason that there are subjects in elementary and secondary level that is

related to agriculture.

RATIONALE

The main problem that this research project wants to solve is the worsening problem of

pollution, specifically the pollution of the land and bodies of water caused by the chemical-based

pesticides. Moreover, this research project also deals with the problem of outbreaks of pesticide-

immune pests and the production of poisonous crops that are harmful to human health. These

problems are needed to be resolved as soon as possible to prevent the more severe effects and

possible branched problems that could be caused by the usage of chemical-based pesticides.

Furthermore, this research intends to test the effectiveness of caimito bark extract as a pesticide

for tomato plant and if it is proven effective and efficient, it will help our agricultural sector.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This research project primarily aims to test the effectiveness of caimito bark extract as an

organic pesticide for tomato plant. The objective of this study is to create and develop an

effective organic pesticide for tomato plant through caimito bark extract. Also, the project aims

to help the crop farmers by using a safe and chemical-free pesticide, and to lessen the usage of

chemical-based pesticides that will prevent the worsening of land and water pollution.

The researchers used the quasi-experimental research design in conducting the study. The

researchers wanted to measure how the caimito bark extract pesticide affects the growth qualities

of the tomato plant under different concentrations. The study uses a quantitative approach in the

analysis of data that is used for analyzing the statistical data and in which the investigation

primarily uses postpositive claim for developing knowledge and employs strategies of inquiry

such as experiment, survey, and collect data in predetermined instrument that yield statistics

data. The collection of data will be gathered through observation of the tomato plant in a given

time frame which is three months.

This study will just last for three months with the guidance of the procedures made by the

researchers. Moreover, the following shows the procedures that the researchers will follow

throughout the study. First, Acquisition of Ingredients and Materials. The researchers will first

search and collect the ingredients and materials that will be used in this study. The caimito bark

will be collected and also the materials like containers, soil for cultivation, and casserole pot.

Second, Extraction of Caimito Bark. After gathering the ingredients and materials, the

researchers will then extract the caimito bark. The researchers plan to make 250 mL of solution

per each set ups. Also, these solutions will have different concentrations of caimito bark extracts

(State: 25g, 50g, 75g, and 100g). In total, there will be 2000mL or 2L solution per setups and

with varying total concentrations of 200g, 400g, 600g, and 800g that in total is equivalent to

2000g or 2kg. Third, Planting of Tomato Plant. The researchers plan to have four (4) Tomato

Plants with the same control variables. They will be having same way of cultivation and

gardening routines. Moreover, these plants will just be having different purposes, four for the

examination of the effectiveness of Caimito bark extract as pesticide and one for control. Fourth,

Weekly Product Testing of Caimito Organic Pesticide. After planting the Tomato plant, there

will be a weekly use of Caimito Organic Pesticides to these plants. Per week, there will be one

input of Caimito Organic Pesticide for all of the plants with same amounts. Fifth, Weekly

observation. The researchers come up to a plan of having weekly observation. The researchers

will work with the Grading Sheet, and there will be a weekly data recording. Moreover, the

observation and data collection will last for about eight succeeding weeks. Furthermore, after

collecting the data through observation from the eight weeks that were allotted, the researchers

will analyze and compute for the average data and observation that will be used for the final

analysis of this study. Sixth, Calculation of Data. Afterwards, the researchers will calculate the

data that were obtained through the Grading Sheet. And last, Analysis of Final Observation.

After the allotted time for cultivation and observation of tomato plants, the researchers will then

analyze the effects of the Caimito Organic Pesticide in accordance to the research instrument.

The final analysis of the data and observation will determine the effectiveness of caimito bark

extract as an organic pesticide for tomato plant.

Furthermore, the researchers created a Grading Sheet for the analyzing the effectiveness of

Caimito Bark extract as Pesticide. This significant sheet will be used as research instrument for

the data gathering process, to be able to quantify the effectiveness of Caimito Bark extract as a

pesticide. The researchers will observe the effectiveness of the organic Caimito pesticide on the

growth of four tomato plant setups in terms of pesticide score sheet: (4) No signs of pest

infestation, (3) Holes; Grease marks and tracks; Pest dropping, (2) Signs of termites; Damage

plants and (1) Active pests; Evidence of nesting.

is 500 php.

The instruments to be used for the small-scale project are listed in the materials with the help

of the Rating Scale for the effectiveness of caimito bark as pesticide for tomato plant. If this is

proven effective and efficient, the project would be needing large-scale instruments with the help

from Department of Science and Technology.
