Introduction to Permaculture 2303A


Permaculture is an integrative, ethics based sustainable design system. We will explore permaculture
design principles for urban and suburban homesteads and farms. Topics covered include the initial
envisioning process, site analysis, zone and sector analysis, energy and material flow along with soil and
vegetation characteristics.

Permaculture Design for Landscape Professionals 2304A


Multifunctional, ecologically sound, regenerative landscapes are at the heart of the Permaculture Design
paradigm. In this class we will explore: Integrative design that supports and restores Ecosystems
Services - Key Permaculture Principles - Design of multifunctional, aesthetically pleasing plant
communities - Plants for Edible Landscaping - Protecting and building a thriving energy flow in the soil
food web - Storing water in the landscape.

Food Not Lawns 2302A
Not just another gardening class, "Food Not Lawns" will help you turn your lawn into a garden and your
neighborhood into a community.

You will learn about ecologically sound methods to eradicate your lawn and re-placing it with gardens,
edible landscaping and forest gardens. We will explore fruit trees, nut trees and other perennial species
to use in your edible landscape instead of lawns and resources intensive plants.

Introductions to Urban Agroforestry 2308A


Agroforestry is a sustainable, integrative, intensive land management science combining trees, shrubs,
livestock and crops. Agroforestry provides a means to link agroecological and permaculture design
practices to urban ecosystems for food production, biodiversity preservation, ecosystem restoration and
enhancement of ecosystem services. We will explore agroforestry practices such as Food Forests, Forest
Farming, Alley Cropping, Windbreaks and buffer systems for urban homesteads, farms and businesses.

Building Community Ecological Enterprises 2307A


Community Ecological Enterprises are businesses that have ecological and social goals as part of their
core business mission. We will explore opportunities for neighborhood ecological enterprises focused on
right livelihood, social justice, and environmental remediation. Urban Ecological Growers is a producer’s
coop focused on production of ecologically significant trees, shrubs and plants by small scale growers.
The project would aggregate and market production from many growers. Learn how to become involved
in this neighborhood regenerative project.

Neighborhood Mycoremediation 2305A
Mushroom mycelium can break down a wide array of contaminants such as petroleum byproducts,
agrochemicals, personal care products and filter out e-coli bacteria, heavy metals and other
contaminates from soil and water. You will learn about: Basic fungal biology, mushrooms for ecosystems
restoration, dog waste mycoremediation. Oyster and King Stropharia mushroom filtration beds. Learn
simple methods to grow oyster and other mushrooms in your shady yard where you can’t grow

Urban Food Forests Workshop 2306A


A food forests is a food production system that mimics the structural and functional relationships of
forest ecosystems. It is designed to maximize beneficial interactions between plant species and provide
multiple important benefits to people and the environment. We will cover Forest Ecology, Guilds and
Plant Communities, soil and water considerations, plants for edible polycultures, Food Forest Design
considerations and the social dimension of Food Forests.
