'I am a Ground Support Equipment Technician (Similar to a diesel mechanic/ electrical
technician) in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). I have served in the RAAF for 12 years,
since leaving my home-town of Burnie in Tasmania. Back in Australia I am based at RAAF
Base Williamtown aka ‘The Hornets Nest’ in Newcastle NSW. Williamtown is home to our
Strike Squadrons No. 3 & 77 who fly the F/A-18 Hornet, and No. 2 our reconnaissance
Squadron who fly the E7 Wedgetail. I am on my second operational deployment to the
Middle East, which is 7 months in duration. I first deployed in 2010 fighting the Taliban,
where I was stationed in Khandahar and Tarin Kot, Uruzgan province, Afghanistan.
This time our mission focus is supporting our ADF and coalition forces aircraft fighting
against Daesh (Isis) in Iraq and Syria', and also supporting other classified operations in the
middle east. Currently we have the Super Hornets of 1 and 6 SQN from RAAF Base Amberley,
which have been striking against ISIS in northern Iraq.
Also we have the E7 Wedgetail reconnaissance aircraft, and KC-30 multi role air-air re-
fueller which supports our hornets and other coalition fast jets whilst they operate over Iraq.
Your support of myself and our armed forces is greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
CPL Greg 'Spiros' Smith

Events report February 2018

Since last newsletter,

Our January meeting was held at the Victoria Hotel Hinton after a short cruise on a very hot
day. The A/C worked well in the pub, thank goodness, but not so much in the old Holdens
that a brave few of us brought along. Great venue and I think we’ll be using this spot again
as a part of a club cruise or possible display day.
Friday Chill 12th Jan.
We had about 8 cars attend the first Friday Chill for the year and it was a lovely evening at
Pacific park with a cool ocean breeze, lots of families relaxing on the grass and some great
music, a great way to support Soul Cafe.

Australia Day Friday 26th Jan
The club had 12 cars on display at Lemon Tree Passage on Friday to help celebrate OZ day,
thanks to Ian and the Tilligery club for inviting us once again. What a great way to enjoy a
morning next to the water showing off some of Australia’s motoring history. And a special
thanks to Sharon and Frank for some delicious morning tea.

Coming up!!!!
Friday Chill
Recommencing 2nd Feb 2018. Come down each Friday 6.30pm to 8.30pm at Pacific Park,
Newcastle, to hear local musicians perform. Bring your picnic rug, drinks, snacks and friends
down for a good time! Donations collected go to the work of Soul Cafe.
