ABSTRACT
Water is the main source for life in the planet earth. It is one resource that has no
substitute. Although water covers three quarters of the planet, 97% of the Earth’s water is
salt water, and thus useless for drinking and many other purposes. Less than 3% of water is
freshwater are available in the form of rivers, streams, glacier and as ground water, Due to
indiscriminate pumping of ground water, the water table going down abnormally and if the
problem is not given a serious look, then the future generation will be eliminated altogether.
Rain is the main sources of water; if the rain water is harvested properly then the water
scarcity can be eliminated permanently. In urban area, rain water available in the roof top
can be collected and can be used for domestic purpose directly.

In our project, we have studied the various needs for the management of water in
TCE MEN’S HOSTEL. The ground water source for the hostel is not sufficient to cater the
daily demand. The various demands and total amount of water consumed in the hostel was
calculated. The hourly data of rainfall collected at Madurai airport, Rain gauge station which
is near to the hostel, for the year 2005 & 2010 was obtained from INDIAN
METROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT. The rainfall pattern was analysed and its potential
for use of Roof water Harvesting (RWH) technique was explored. The roof area of the hostel
is large, the roof top water that can be obtained is considerable a large amount; by trial and
error basis we decided the storage tank capacity considering the Cost Benefit Ratio. After
fixing the capacity of storage, based on the daily rainfall data available, the total number of
days, the available amount of water can be supplied fully for washing utensils and hand
washing in Mess is calculated.

We have concluded that a RWH system may be implemented in order to manage

scarcity to some extent, while the remaining surplus which is unstored will be directed
towards groundwater recharge.
