Hydraulic adjustment of geothermal brine distribution systems

In which cases is it necessary to adjust hydraulics ?

Hydraulically correct adjusted installations guarantee an optimal flow
circulation and an economical usage according to valid Energy Saving
Regulations.
According to VDI 4640 page 2 paragraph 5.2.4 connecting pipes should
be conducted in parallel switched circuits to the distributor.
Every probe should have an equal flow. At the highest point of the
construction distributor and collector should have breather valves. The
single probe pipes should be installed with valves for regulation and shut
off. Due to thermic interaction a minimum distance should be observed
(depending on probe length look at VDI 4640, part 2, section 5.1.1).
As a result of the spreading of the installed probes this regularly leads to
different length of the installation pipeline.
The different pipe lengths lead to different pressure loses in single brine
circuits. The probe pipe with the lowest pressure loss would have the
biggest volume of carrier medium. For an equal abstraction capacity
probes with the same length should be pass through with an equal flow
rate.
To have an equal flow of the geothermal probes an hydraulic adjustment
is necessary. This adjustment could be made with regulating valves in
brine distributors. With this valves the corresponding flow rate could be
achieved and the brine circuits could be adjusted so that every circuit has
the same pressure loss. So every probe has an equal flow rate.

A pipe laying according to Tichelmann system is not suitable for

geothermal systems.

Flow
Hydraulic adjustment with plastic brine distributor 2061
For purging/ breathing of the plant only the valves of the purged/ breathed
circuit has to be opened. The valves of the left brine circuits has to be
closed.
After purging and breathing of the plant the required flow rate could be
regulated with an regulating valves for each circuit. For this regulation the
heat pump need to powered.
Firstly all flow and return valves has to be opened completely. By
clockwise rotation of the regulating valves probably a throttling of the flow
rates of some lines could be effected. In fact that some settings interact
each other, normally an adjustment for the correct regulation is necessary.
To mark the selected presetting, the adjustment ring could be latched up
to marking into the correct position.

To mark the selected presetting, the adjustment ring could be latched up
to marking into the correct position. So closing and opening of the valves
without regulation is possible.
If there are flow meters mounted in return, the flow will be regulated
according to the scale of the inspection glass. The reading line shows the
bottom of the float.

The adjustment happens by using a screwdriver on the set screw. The
reading line shows the bottom of the float.
All valves in flow and return need to be opened. By rotation in clockwise
direction of the set screw an possible throttle to the flow rate could be
achieved.
This process need to be repeated for other circuits. Normally all
adjustments interact each other so an final adjustment is necessary.

The measurement of the plant happens with hand computer.
All valves in flow need to be opened and all balancing valves need to be
adjusted on an equal scale setting.
The computer need to be connected with the measurement connections
of every balancing valve. After measurement of the differential pressure
the input of the set value of the flow rate can be adjusted.
According to the double-staged indicator scale all valves are adjusted to
the computed pre-adjustment. For inspection a control survey on some
valves is recommended.

Attention :

Adjustment of flow value according to indicator scale of the flow

meter
All scale values of the flow meters are synchronized on water as flow
medium.
For the use of other head transfer media e.g. water-glycol mixture the real
flow values differ from the displayed value. The difference is depending on
the viscosity and the density of the medium as well as the concentration
and the temperature.
Antifreeze mixtures have an high viscosity and density than water, so the
displayed value is higher than the real flow.
The quality factor of the displayed value for ordinary media and operating
temperature have a range from 0,75 to 0,85.

Pressure losses in plant

By using other heat transfer media than water the pressure losses in the
plant increase according to the changed physical values.
The correction value for the pressure loss can be seen from the
instruction manual for head transfer medium of your supplier.
