ation required to perform service work on the EF-S system.
The service manual is available via the website: www.tridec.com.
Effective use:

The EF-S system is not designed to be used independently. It has been designed to be mounted
on a trailer/semi-trailer as an external steering system. Modifications of any kind may compromise
the safety of the system. The TRIDEC product warranty and the type approval certificate are
rendered invalid if these products are modified without first obtaining written consent from
TRIDEC. All warranty claims against TRIDEC or suppliers of the EF-S system are invalidated if the
EF-S system has not been installed according to the instructions issued by TRIDEC.
Prior to putting the system into service, compliance of the trailer on which the system is installed
with the applicable national road traffic regulations must be established. The system may only be
used in accordance with the instructions for the tractor unit and any other trailer instructions.
The diagrams in this manual are only included as examples and do not serve any other purpose.
The diagrams may differ slightly from the supplied system.

Service manual EF-S

1 Description
This section contains information about the EF-S system’s components and about how the EF-S
system is operated.

1.1 Operation
The EF-S system is a total system developed by TRIDEC. Its purpose it to steer trailers/semi-trail-
ers with one or more steered axles.
It allows the driverto alter the steering angle of the wheels on the steered axles when manoeuvring
a trailer/semi-trailer, which makes manoeuvring easier. Once the manoeuvring has been com-
pleted, the wheels can be turned back to the driving direction, either manually or automatically.
The EF-S system allows the driver to steer the trailer/semi-trailer either manually or automatically.
When the “Automatic” function is active, the EF-S system only steers according to the Ackermann
principle (see Figure 1-1).

Figure 1-1

With the Ackermann principle, each steered wheel draws a circle. The middle points of these
circles are all in the same place.
The wheels of the trailer turn depending on the angle (0WS) (see "System info" on
page 58)between the tractor unit and the trailer/semi-trailer. These angular rotations are determ-
ined in advance and are set per axle in the EF-S system’s program. The EF-S system has a cent-
ring circuit and a number of steering circuits (dependent on the order).
During automatic steering, the angular rotation of the wheels of the trailer/semi-trailer is 100% up
to a vehicle speed of 30 km/h (see Figure 1-2). That means that the steering angles of the trailer’s
wheels are exactly the same as the pre-set angular rotations. The angular rotations reduce at a

1 S_EF-S_EN V1.0
Service manual EF-S

speed of 30-50 km/h. They are, therefore, smaller than the pre-set angles. At speeds above 50
km/h, the wheels of the trailer/semi-trailer are no longer steered when the tractor unit changes dir-
ection. The centring function automatically becomes active at a speed of more than 55 km/h.

The EF-S system uses two EBS signals:

n The speed signal

n The on/off signal

To determine the speed of thearticulated vehicle, the EF-S system uses the speed signal. The
on/off signal is used to start the battery-charging main control unit when EBS becomes active.

For the EF-S system to work correctly, the wheels of the trail-
er/semi-trailer must be aligned according to the specifications.

Manually, the wheels can be steered according to both the Ackermann principle and the crab steer-
ing principle (see Figure 1-3).

1.3 Battery charger

The batteries for the EF-S system are charged by the generator via the NATO connection with a
charging current of no more than 45 A when the tractor unit’s engine is running.

Figure 1-5

The intelligent charger measures the temperature of the batteries. This makes it possible to adjust
both the charging current’s amperage and charging voltage to the temperature. At a low battery
temperature, a higher amperage and voltage are required to keep the battery at the desired
voltage. At a higher temperature, the amperage and the voltage can be lower. The charger can
provide a maximum current of 45 A. The charger is protected by two fuses. The input has an auto-
matic fuse, while the output has a 60 A replaceable fuse. The charger is sealed. The fuse may only
be replaced after permission has been granted by TRIDEC.

The warranty is invalidated if the seal is broken without permission

to do so from TRIDEC.

1.3.1 Accumulator
The hydraulic circuit for the wheel centring system has a cylindrical accumulator. In this context,
centring means that the wheels of the trailer/semi-trailer are placed in the straight-ahead position.
The system uses this accumulator to centre the wheels. The accumulator operates all the steered
axles and has sufficient oil pressure and oil capacity. Once centred, the axles act as rigid axles.

Figure 1-6

The accumulator is activatedin the following situations:

n If the hydraulic pump cuts out or if there is an oil leak. If there is an electronic fault.
The wheels are then automatically moved to thestraight-ahead position.
n When “To straight ahead” is selected in the remote control’s “Steering” menu (see "To the
straight-ahead position (centring)" on page 44).
n When thevehicle speed exceeds 55 km/h.

1.3.2 Wireless connection

The wireless connection is created via a Bluetooth module. This module allows the remote control
to activate the EF-S system’s functions and to read data.

Figure 1-7

The Bluetooth module must be fitted againstthe headboard(zie Figure 1-8)of the trailer/semi-
trailer.

Themain switch switches the current to the EF-S system and is normally switched on. The current
may only be turned off when work is carried out on the EF-S system. This can be done by dis-
connecting the battery’s negative terminal clamp.

1.3.4 Steered axle's hydraulic control unit

A hydraulic control unit is mounted above every steered axleof the trailer/semi-trailer.

Figure 1-11

1. CAN IO-module 4. Pressure sensor

2. Accumulator 5. Measurement connection
3. Control valve

The hydraulic control unit controls the flow of fluid from and to the relevant part of the double cyl-
inder on the steering box(see Figure 1-12)and (see Figure 1-13).
The accumulator (2) has two functions:

n Pressure compensation for the hydraulic circuit in which it is included.

n Volume compensation for the hydraulic circuit in which it is included.

In practice, this results in maximization of the steering system’s reaction speed. Volume and pres-
sure fluctuations in the hydraulic circuit are absorbed by the accumulator.

1.3.5 Angle sensorKingpin

The kingpin is the coupling point between the tractor unit and the trailer/semi-trailer. For EF-S sys-
tems, the kingpin has a sensor that detects the angle ß between the tractor unit and the trail-
er/semi-trailer. This information is sent to the main control unit. Themain control unit determines
the corresponding steering angle of the wheels of the trailer/semi-trailer based on the vehicle
speed and then activates the hydraulic system.

Figure 1-14

1.3.6 Wheel angle sensor

The angle sensor (1WSA, 2WSA, 3WSA) detects the angular rotation of the wheels on the steered
axles. Every steered axle of the trailer/semi-trailer is fitted with an angle sensor.

Figure 1-15

The main control unit compares the signal it receives to the desired value for that moment. If neces-
sary, the hydraulic system is activated to adjust the angular rotation of the wheel concerned. The
angle sensor is mounted on thesteering knuckle and informs the main control unit of the current
angular rotation of the wheels. The control unit stops activating the hydraulic system once the
desired angle is achieved.
The current values of the steering angles (see Figure 1-16)can be read via the “SYSTEMINFO”
menu on the remote control (see "System info" on page 58).

Figure 1-16

n 0WS is the angle the tractor unit (kingpin) makes with the trailer/semi-trailer.
n 1WS is the angle that the wheels of the first steered axle make.
n 2WS is the angle that the wheels of the second steered axle make.
n 3WS is the angle that the wheels of the third steered axle make.

1.3.7 Steering box

Thesteering box has adouble hydraulic cylinder. The left-hand half (2) works as a steering cylinder
and the right-hand half (3) works as a centring cylinder. Each side of the steering box has a a steer-
ing ball joint (1) fitted to it. The steering box is mounted on the steered axle. The left-hand side and
the right-hand side of the steering box are connected to a swivel axle arm.

Figure 1-17

1. Steering ball joint 3. Centring cylinder

2. Steering cylinder

The left-hand side of the double hydraulic cylinder ensures that the steering angles of the wheels
on the axle are changed as required during normal use. The right-hand side of the cylinder acts as
a centring cylinder. When this part of the cylinder is activated, the wheels are placed in the straight-
ahead position. The axle then acts as a rigid axle. At speeds between 0-30 km/h, the steering
angle of the wheels on the trailer’s steered axle is 100%. In other words, the steering angle is equal
to the calculated steering angle at a certain speed.
At speeds of more than 30 km/h,the steering angle is proportionally reduced. The steering angle of
the wheels on the steered axle is then smaller than the calculated value.

At speeds between 30-50 km/h, the steering angle is proportionally reduced

to 0°. At speeds above 55 km/h, the axle is rigid. At higher speeds, the cent-
ring function is active.

1.3.8 Warning light

The EF-S system has a warning light. This light has three colour areas:

n Red
n Orange
n White

Each colour area has a separate function and can light up.

Figure 1-18

The white warning light indicates that the EF-S system does not have any faults and is ready for
use. The orange light indicates a system error or that the system is not yet ready for use. It is still
permitted to drive the trailer/semi-trailer. If the red warning light is lit, it is NOT permitted to drive the
trailer/semi-trailer. Contact the service workshop for further instructions. The warning light must
be located in a position where it can easily be seen from the tractor unit’s cabin.

1.3.9 Tank box/filter box

The EF-S system has a box which holds the tank and thefilters. There is a sensor in the wall of the
tank which transmits a signal when the oil level becomes too low. A message is then displayed
(see Figure 1-21) on the screen of the remote control. There is also a temperature sensor in the
wall of the tank. Both the supply line and the return line are fitted with a filter and acontamination
indicator.

The filters must be periodically replaced, according to the frequency

specified by TRIDEC. The filters must be replaced if, for any reason,
the contamination indicators cause a message to be displayed on
the remote control’s screen.

The tank may only be topped up with hydraulic oil that exactly
meets the TRIDEC specifications (zie "Technical information" on
page 161)

During normal use, the filter box’s cover must be closed and locked.

2 Remote control
For safety reasons, moving parts must remain in view of the oper-
ator when the remote control is used.

Theremote control (see Figure 2-1) is part of the EF-S system. The EF-S system can be operated
with the remote control via a wireless connection (Bluetooth) or via the synchronisation cable.

Figure 2-1

2.7.1 Synchronization
It is only possible for the EF-S system’s main control unit to communicate with a Bluetooth device
(remote control) after the Bluetooth device has been registered in themain control unit. This pre-
vents just any Bluetooth device from being able to communicate with the main control unit.
Communication between the Bluetooth module and the remote control can be interrupted for the
following reasons:

n The distance between the Bluetooth module and the remote control is too great.
n There is a large object situated between the remote control and the Bluetooth module.
n The connection between the Bluetooth module and the remote control has been interrupted.
The Bluetooth module is faulty. The warning light is lit orange. The corresponding message
can only be viewed by the Service department.

3 Using the EF-S system

The EF-S system is turned on when the ignition key is placed in the ignition position. First, the
tractor unit’s EBS system is activated. This system then turns on both the EF-S system and the
battery charger. The remote control is turned on via the accessory position and starts auto-
matically. Various messages are displayed on the remote control’s screen.

NEVER drive with an articulated vehicle whose EF-S system has

not been pressurized!

After the button is pressed, the angular rotation of the wheels of the trailer/semi-trailer is
changed, if necessary, to match the angular rotation of the tractor unit with regard to the trail-
er/semi-trailer.
If you forget to press button , the EF-S system’s operating system is started automatically as
soon as the vehicle’s speed exceeds 2 km/h or if the tractor unit is at an angle to the trailer/semi-
trailer.

Before pressing the button, make sure there are no people or

animals near the wheels because there is a risk of becoming
trapped!

The EF-S system starts in two phases:

1. The hydraulic system is pressurized.

2. The system is activated.

During the first phase, the wheels of the trailer/semi-trailer do not move. During the second phase,
the wheels can move.

Always select the “Automatic steering” function when driving on a

public road(see "Automatic steering" on page 43).

3.5 To the left(Ackermann)

If this function is activated, the trailer/semi-trailer steers to the left according to the Ackermann prin-
ciple. In that case, the imaginary plumb lines go through the wheels of the articulated vehicle
through a point that is to the left of the articulated vehicle. The angular rotation differs per wheel on
the steered axle.

Depending on the customer’s requirements, left and right can be swapped

over.

Procedure:

1. Follow the procedure given below.

If the button remains pressed, the angular rotation of the wheels is

increased until the maximum permissible steering angle is reached.

Manual steering of the wheels of the trailer/semi-trailer is possible up to a

speed of 15 km/h. At higher speeds, the wheels of the steered axles are
steered automatically to correspond to the angular rotation of the kingpin. A
message is displayed on the remote control’s screen (see Figure 3-3).
