STUDENT’S NAME: CHING’TONY DONALD MBUMA

ADMISSION NO: 14020413007

DATE OF SUBMISSION: June 2017

Question: A proposed 5m long internal column in a “rigid” jointed steel structure is to be loaded
concentrically with 2000KN dead and 2000KN imposed load (Figure below). Assuming that
fixity at the top and bottom of the column gives effective rotational restraints. Design column
sections.

Solution

Data given:

q k =2000KN
g k =2000KN
L=3m
Class: SC4
Assumptions made were of a braced column
Required:
A. Design of steel column structure
B. Design of timber column structure
PROJECT: Design of Steel and Timber Approval:
column

DESIGNER: Ching,tony Mbuma Date: June,2017

CHECKED: Eng.Chacha Sheet No.

REF. CODE CALCULATION OUTPUT

A. DESIGN OF STEEL COLUMN STRUCTURE:

i. Load analysis:
P= (1.4 x 2000) + (1.6 x 2000) = 6000KN P=6000KN

ii. Effective Length (le)

For the braced case the column is assumed to be effectively

held in position at both ends and restrained in direction at both
ends. It will buckle about the weak y – y axis.

Therefore, Le = 0.7L = 0.7 x 5 = 3.5 m=3500mm Le=3500mm

iii. Slenderness ratio

le
 =  180
ryy
∴ryy≥Le/180=3500/180=19.4mm=1.94cm
iv. Sizing the structure
The following assumed so as to meet the design;
 ryy≥1.94cm
 Py=275N/mm2 (for thickness ≤16mm and grade
43.)

From table UC property;

By using ryy≥1.94cm
Provide:

 For first trial:

→ryy=3.87cm (Nearly to 1.94cm)

→Ag=47.3cm2

→Serial size=152x152x37 UB/Kg/m

 Dimensions:
→T=11.5mm
→t=8.1mm
→D=161.8mm
→d=123.6mm

For second trial;

→ryy=8.25cm (Nearly to 1.94cm)

→Ag=360cm2

→Serial size=305x305x283 UB/Kg/m

 Dimensions:

→T=44.1mm(>40mm so Py=245N/mm2)

→t=26.9mm

→D=365.3mm

→d=248.7mm

v. Checking the stability

 For first trial:
a) Slenderness ratio
λ=le/ryy≤180
λ =3500/38.7≤180???
90.44≤180???
Yes 90.44≤180

∴Since 90.44≤180, hence the structure is Ok!!!!

b) Compression stress

From; P≤ Pc

But Pc=P’c*Ag

But P’c=f (λ ,Py)=f(90.44,275)= (Table 27c)

By interporation under scientific calculator,

90 142
90.44 P’c
92 137
P’c=140.9N/mm2

Therefore;

P≤ P’c *Ag

6000KN≤140.9*4730???

6000KN≤666.46KN……….Not ok

 For second trial:

a) Slenderness ratio

λ=le/ryy≤180

λ =3500/82.5≤180???

42.42≤180???

Yes 42.42≤180

∴Since 42.42≤180, hence the structure is Ok!!!!

λ =42.42

b) Compression stress

From; P≤ Pc

But Pc=P’c*Ag

But P’c=f (λ ,Py)=f(42.42,245)= (Table 27c)

By interpolation under scientific calculator;

42 222
42.42 P’c
44 220

P’c=221.58N/mm2

Therefore;

P≤ P’c *Ag

6000KN≤221.58*36000???

6,000KN≤7,976.88KN????

Yes 6,000KN≤7,976.88KN P’c=7,976.88KN

∴Since 6,000≤7,976.88KN, hence the structure is Ok!!!!

B.TIMBER COLUMN DESIGN:

i. Load analysis
F=gk +qk=2000+2000=4000KN
ii. Effective length (le);
le=0.7*L=0.7*5000=3500mm

iii. Ratios;
 λ=Le/b≤52
∴b≥3500/52=67.31mm
 λ=le/ryy≤180
∴ryy≥3500/180=19.44mm
iv. Sizing the column
By using ryy≥19.44
From Design table 98 of BS 5268
Provide:
→ryy =21.7
→Ixx =169*106mm4
→Basic size =75 x300 (mm)
v. Checking the adequate of structure
a) Ratios;
 le/b≤52
3500/75≤52??? λ (b)=46.7
46.7≤52???
Yes 46.7≤52.

∴Since 46.7≤52, hence the structure is Ok!!!!

 le/ryy≤180
3500/21.7≤180??? λ (ryy)=161.3
161.3≤180???
Yes 161.3≤180

∴Since 161.3≤180, hence the structure is Ok!!!!

b) Compression stability
From;
σ c, a,//≤ σ c, adm, //
σ c, a,//≤ σ c, g, // x K3 x K12
F/A≤ σ c, g, // x K3 x K12
From design table 8 Grade stress of BS 5268
→ σ c, g, // =f(SC4)=7.9N/mm2
→Emin=6600N/mm2.
→ K12 =f(λyy , Emin/ σ c, g, // x K3)
=f(161.3, 6600/(7.9*1.0))
∴ K12=f(161.3,835.4)

From table 20 of BS5268 (Modification factors)

160 161.3 180

800 0.172 b 0.139
835.4 a K12 c
900 0.188 d 0.153
By interpolation using scientific calculator;
800→0.172
835.4→a
900→0.188
∴ a=0.178
800→0.139
835.4→c
900→0.153
∴ c=0.161
160→0.178
161.3→ K12
180 →0.161
∴ K12=0.177

F/A ≤σ c, g, // x K3 x K12
(4000*103)/(75*300) ≤7.9*1*0.177
177.78N/mm2≤1.398N/mm2
∴Since 177.78N/mm2≥1.398N/mm2, hence the structure not 177.78N/mm2≥1.398N/mm2
ok.
Remedies to over the situation above:
