Both ends of pipe shall be left bare (without insulation) to a length of 150 / 220 mm for the
purpose of making joints. The pipe system shall be 16 bar rated.
CARRIER PIPES
POLYURETHANE INSULATION
An effective insulation layer shall be obtained using polyurethane foam. During the
foaming operation, the steel pipe and outer casing shall be securely bonded together. This
shall ensure a completely homogenous foam completely filled throughout the pipe length.
The rigid polyurethane foam shall have a density of 70 - 100 kg/m³, a thermal conductivity
not exceeding 0.026 W/m°C. and a minimum thickness as follows:
* 32 mm for 65 mm ø pipes
* 42 mm for 100 mm / 150 mm ø pipes
* 48 mm for 200 mm ø pipes
* 75 mm for 250 mm ø pipes
OUTER CASING
The outer casing shall be of high density polyethylene H.D.P.E. to ASTM D1248 Type 3
Class ‘C’, having a density of 950 kg/m³.
JOINTS
In order to facilitate the jointing of pipework within the confined spaces of the pipe trenches,
mechanical couplings of approved proprietary manufacture shall be used.
All pipe joints shall remain exposed until the pressure testing has been carried out to the
satisfaction of the Engineer.
Finished pipe joints shall be covered with H.D.P.E. sleeves, securely bonded to the pipe
sleeves at each end. The inner cavity between the pipe joint and sleeve shall be filled with
a high density tow-part epoxy foam, inserted via a small hole in the jointing sleeve. After
the curing time of the epoxy foam, the hole in the jointing sleeve shall be securely plugged
with a waterproof mastic.
