TASKS 1: RISK
ASSESSMENT

( Assessing LIFESTYLE, your

HOME, and your COMMUNITY in
relation to DISASTER RISK
REDUCTION MANAGEMENT.)
COMMUNITY DISASTER RISKS
1. WIRING OF ELECTRICITY
 We often see some of the electric post that is not in proper way. Many of the wires
are tangled and some post are weak and already inclined. And because of this, it can
cause a big damage when calamities came.
 To prevent this phenomenon, if we had seen this in our neighborhood, we should
report it as soon as possible to the officials to not caused a big damage in the future.

2. LOW AREAS/FLOOD PRONE AREAS

 There are low areas in the community that are prone to flood. Some of this
area belongs to the poor families who had their house built in that place.
That is why they are the most vulnerable people when it comes to flood due
to heavy rains.
 In order to prevent this damages, the authority must do something about it.
The government must have an evacuation plan for the families in low areas
and it would be much better if they will relocate the families houses.

3. FIRE PRONE AREAS

 In some parts of the community, there are what we called squatter areas
who had their house illegally built due to poverty. And because of the
narrowed and poor construction of the houses, they are more prone to the
disasters like fire.
 To lessen the risks of this disaster, the government must do an action about
those squatter areas. They can help them by relocating them into another
place or they can create a program about Disaster Risk Reduction in order to
give knowledge to the people inside the community.
4. LANDSLIDE PRONE AREAS
 Due to poverty, some people in the community can’t afford to buy a house in
a safe place that is why they have no choice but to live near mountains that
are prone to disaster like landslide.
 To prevent high damages during this calamity, they should first know what to
do when this kind of incident happened. They should also participate in
community activities program about the Reduction of Disaster Risk.

5. PROPER DISPOSAL OF WASTE/ GARBAGE

 There are hard-headed people in the community that do not know how to
throw their garbage properly and because of that improper waste disposal,
the garbage sometimes stuck in the canal that is the big cause of flood in
some areas.
 There are many ways to prevent this problem from happening. One of these
is, each barangay should have a program about the proper disposal of the
garbage to lessen the vulnerability of flood in some areas. They should also
have a program about tree planting to help in preventing flood especially in
low areas.
PERSONAL DISASTER RISKS
1. CHARGING PHONE OVERNIGHT
 Charging my phone overnight is one of my common disaster risks. It’s not
that I intended to do it. It’s just that, I always fell asleep while charging my
phone. And because of this, it can possibly cause a disaster like fire when the
device is overheated.
 To prevent this disaster to occur, make sure to unplug the charger
or other outlets from the socket before going to bed.

2. UNAWARE IN THE CURRENT NEWS

 Not watching the news daily is one of my disaster risks. Because through this,
I am being unaware to what is happening in my surroundings. I am not aware
of what disasters are currently occurring in my country and that can makeme
not prepared if ever I experience such in the future.
 To reduce this risk of mine, I should start watching news to be aware and gain
knowledge about the calamities happening in our country.

3. USING PHONE WHEN CHARGING

 This is the disaster risk that I always do. I don’t know but I can’t help using my
phone even if it’s charging. Maybe because it is the nature of the millennials
nowadays. Using phone when charging can cause this to overheat that can
lead into fire.
 Preventing this kind of risk is not easy. All you need to have is self-discipline
and awareness that what you are doing can possibly bring you harm.
4. NOT PARTICIPATIVE IN COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
 Not participating in community activities can also bring me unawareness to
what the community are doing to prevent or to be prepared in any hazards
that may come in the future.
 Even your schedule are hectic, you still need to insert the community
activities into it. Because after all this is also for your own safety and
preparedness when the time of calamities came.

5. PLUGGING WITH WET HANDS

 I usually do this especially when I am in a hurry. This activity can cause of
electric shock that can lead me to death.
 To prevent this risks, make sure that your hand is dry before plugging an
outlet.
FAMILY DISASTER RISKS
1. OVERLOAD PLUGGING
 This activity are common in the family. Especially when there are many
members of the family that is in need of electricity. This plugging of many
appliances in one socket or extension can lead to short circuit and
overloading that is prone to fire.
 To prevent this disaster risk, make sure that the plugged appliances will not
exceed to the maximum voltage of the socket you are using.

2. NOT HAVING EMERGENCY KITS

 I don’t know why my family doesn’t have emergency kits. Maybe because it is
way too expensive. And because of this, in times of calamities, we were not
able to give first aid if ever a family member or neighbor got injured.
 In order to be prepared in the future calamities, we should start having
emergency kits especially the first aid, not just for self safety but for others
also.

3. TANGLED WIRES
 Sometimes we can’t prevent to get our appliances or devices wires tangled. It
can make us confused and can possibly also be the cause of fire.
 To prevent this accident we should be responsible enough to organize the
wirings of electricity and appliances in our house.
4. LEAVING THE TV ON
 Watching TV is one of the favorite bonding activity of a family. And
sometimes, due to enjoyment while watching and not minding the time, the
TV might get overheat that can lead to explosion or fire.
 To stop this event from happening, make sure to turn off the TV if you’re
done watching already. You can also check the temperature at the back of
the TV to know where to turn it off.

5. LEAVING THE LIGHTS ON EVEN IF IT’S DAYTIME

 There are times that we tend to forget to turn the lights off in our house
before leaving. And because of that, aside from having high electricity bills, it
can also cause fire accident.
 To prevent this accident from occurring, make sure to turn off the lights or
any other appliances before leaving the house.
PERFORMANCE
TASK 2: CASE
STUDY

(VULNERABILITY TO
DISASTER)
I. INTRODUCTION

The primary concern of this study is to determine the similarities and differences of
two different families with diverse socio-economic statuses in the community on
conquering or facing distinct kinds of disaster or calamities. This study also examines the
preparation and readiness of the families when it comes to their vulnerability and exposure
to any Disaster Risks. At the end of this research, we can finally arbitrate how the people
involved in this study partake in community organizations and programs about Disaster Risk
Reduction Management and how this activity contributes a lot in surviving and recovering
from a calamity.

There is no such thing as a 'natural' disaster, only natural hazards.

Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) aims to reduce the damage caused by natural hazards
like earthquakes, floods, droughts and cyclones, through an ethic of prevention.

Disasters often follow natural hazards. A disaster's severity depends on how much
impact a hazard has on society and the environment. The scale of the impact in turn
depends on the choices we make for our lives and for our environment. These choices
relate to how we grow our food, where and how we build our homes, what kind of
government we have, how our financial system works and even what we teach in schools.
Each decision and action makes us more vulnerable to disasters - or more resilient to them.

The process in doing this study is not easy. Everybody knows how hard it is to start a
conversation with someone especially when it is a stranger. So I need to cover up my
shyness with confidence for me to be able to communicate well with them. There are also
some questions that are really sensitive that is why I needed to be extra careful when
asking those especially to the family of the less fortunate one. In addition, it takes a lot of
time, money, and effort for me to find and decide which families inside my neighborhood
I’m going to conduct this research. But all in all, I enjoyed doing this study despite of the
challenges I encountered because first of all, it enhanced my social and communication
skills. Plus the fact that I also gained knowledge about Disaster Readiness and Risk
Reduction Management.
II. DESCRIPTION OF THE CASES

A. The Rich Family

 The fortunate family that I had chosen in this case is the Domar Family. Their
family consist of 7 members. Mrs. Marina is 54 years old and a high school graduate
while her husband Mr. Dodong is also 54 years old and a graduate of a vocational
course. The spouse have 5 children consisting of 2 girls and 3 boys. Their 2 girls are still
studying, one is in the college level and the other one is in high school. Their eldest son
who’s 29 years old is already graduated in the field of Accountancy while the remaining
2 brothers is in college and elementary level. Because of their status in life, they’re
lucky to find a secured place for their beautiful and well-furnished house that is not
really vulnerable to any disaster risks. According to my Grandmother and Auntie, the
Domar family owned a lot of houses and even have a mansion. They also have a
Welding & Hardware Shop, Eatery, and a Store business. Mr. Dodong is the one who
manage their welding business while their eldest son is helping them sometimes to run
it because he also have a networking business. Their estimated annual income for a
month is about a total range of 100,000-150,000. They also have a complete set of
gadgets and appliances and owned 4 cars. Obviously, their family get to eat three or
more square meals a day. They also have bank accounts in BDO and BPI but like any
other people in the society they also have a debts or loans to settle most especially
when buying a supplies or stocks for their business. And it is sad to say that because
they are engaged so much in running their own business, they’ve already forgotten to
participate in community activities or programs especially when it comes in Saving the
Environment and Reducing Disaster Risks. Yes, they seldom donate some money in their
barangay but it can’t change the fact that their knowledge about Disaster Risks
Reduction is not that bold. Maybe because of their confidence that they’re living in a
place that is less vulnerable to any hazardous events.
B. The Poor Family

 The less fortunate family that I had chosen in this case is the Flores Family.
Their family consist of 5 members. Mrs. Flores is 30 years old and a high school graduate
while her husband is 32 years old and attained college level. The spouse have 3 children
that are all studying in elementary level. Unfortunately, one of their children has a
disability. They are living near the mountain area and their house is located just a few
inches away from the wide area of rice field. According to Mrs. Flores, they are always
experiencing floods especially on heavy rains. The highest level of flood that they
encountered is about their waist level. Mrs. Flores is a housewife and they get able to
earn a living by driving a pedicab of his husband with their own motor. Their monthly
income is estimated for about 9,000a month including their bills and other payments.
The only gadgets and appliances they have is just a cellphone and a ceiling fan. They also
don’t have any bank accounts and many debts to settle, but even if their life is difficult,
they still get able to eat three square meals a day. But what is nice in this family is that
they are able to participate in barangay activities and programs about Saving the
Environment and Reducing Disaster Risks. Mr. and Mrs. Flores also did not forget their
responsibility to teach their children what to do in times of calamities and that is what I
admired the most in this family.
III. ANALYSIS

Vulnerability
I think both of the two families are vulnerable to any risks of a calamity especially
when it is a Natural Hazards. The only difference is their capability and their way in
conquering such a disaster. In the fortunate family, because they have enough money in
their hands, they are able to have a secured place with not much vulnerability to any
disasters like flood and fire. But in the other hand, due to poverty and lack of capabilities to
have a safer place for them, the unfortunate family chose to live at an area that is more
vulnerable to disaster risks. In this case, it is obviously proven that your living condition and
socio-economic status contributes a lot for coping up any calamities.

Knowledge and Preparedness

When it comes to knowledge and preparedness about Disaster Risk Reduction, there
is a big differences between the two families that caught my interest. Based on what I
observed, the family that has more vulnerability to disaster risks which is the less fortunate,
have greater knowledge and preparedness about the Risk Reduction Management than the
fortunate family who is not vulnerable enough to any risks. The less fortunate family are
more actively participating in community activities about Saving the Environment and
readiness in calamities than the fortunate one. Maybe because it is their only way of
securing their lives and making sure that they are prepared no matter what disasters may
come in the future because they don’t have enough money in the first place to make it more
easier to survive in such events. Not unlike the fortunate family who only depends in their
living condition and their economic status to overcome any disaster.

Survival and Recovery

At the end of the day, it is not your money, way of living, and socio-economic status
that can help you in surviving and recovering from a disaster, but instead, it is knowing your
responsibility as a part of the society to know how to manage Risk Reduction, get prepared,
and be ready for any disasters that we may face and encounter in the near future. Not only
for ourselves, but to help others also to stand up after the fall.
