This chapter discusses the method and procedures utilized in the study. This includes the
tradition of inquiry, sample and sampling technique, instrumentation, and data collection
procedures.
Tradition of inquiry
This research study is guided by the data collection tool survey questionnaire. The
researchers hand a survey questionnaire to the respondents for them to answer it honestly, in order
to understand the circumstances and behavior or opinions of respondents. The survey methodology
is guided by the principles of statistics from the moment of creating a sample, or a group of people
to represent a population, up to the time of the survey results’ analysis and interpretation.
The purpose of the study is to know how much time does the respondents of Batangas State
University Integrated School Senior High School spend using their smartphones as well as it’s
The repondents for the study are chosen through random sampling, wherein each member
of the population has an equal chance of being selected as a subject. The entire process of sampling
is done in a single step with each subject selected independently of the other members of the
population.
Ten (10) students from each class sections of the Batangas State University Senior High
School were randomly chosen to become the research respondents considering that they are both
willing and interested to answer the survey questionnaire, for a total of Sixty (60) respondents.
The requirements for the participation of the said students were disclosure, capacity, and
voluntariness. Information, which are the objectives, procedure, risks, and benefits of the research
are needed to be disclosed to the research respondents. The capacity of the participants was also
taken into consideration by the researchers, such as their intelligence level, maturity, and language
needs. Lastly, voluntariness is required and the participants were not coerced or negatively

The researchers prepared open-ended questions, which allow the participants to elaborate
their opinions giving space for variety and originality to give more depth to the answers. The
purpose of the interview is to learn about the opinions and perspectives of the participants

The focused group discussion was held during the lunch break between 12:00 and 1:00 in
the afternoon and after their class around 4:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon of the chosen students. Each
interview has an estimated time of 30 minutes, which gives the participants enough time to
elaborate their answers. The whole group discussion was recorded through audio and video means.
The participants were given letters before pushing through with the interview. The letter
states the rights of the participants and informs them that their answers will be confidential. The
letter also asks the permission of the participants about their voice being recorded and their face
showing to the camera since it is needed for data analysis and interpretation. Moreover, the
participants were given the choice to alter their voice recording and blur their faces in the video

The researchers prepared questions wherein the answers are guided by the likert-type scale,
which allow the researchers to interpret the given responses through statistical tools such as
(ANONG TOOOL). Likert-type or frequency scales use fixed choice response formats and are
agreement/disagreement. The purpose of the survey questionnaire is to learn about the opinions
and perspectives of the participants regarding the problem. (Bowling, 1997; Burns, & Grove, 1997)
