CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

According to “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learning”, learning is

acquiring new knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, preferences or

understanding, and may involve synthesizing different types of

information. The ability to learn is possessed by humans, animals and

some machines. Human learning may occur as part of education or

personal development. It may be goal-oriented and may be aided by

motivation. The study of how learning occurs is part of educational

psychology, learning theory, and pedagogy. Learning may occur as a

result of habituation or classical conditioning, seen in many animal

species, or as a result of more complex activities. Learning may occur

consciously or without conscious awareness.

Changes in educational system create a ripple pattern, altering

foundational, long-held views. Certain fields are highly susceptible to

change, while others are more conservative. In areas of less personal

interest, new approaches and techniques are not viewed as a threat. As

changes come closer to our core, they take on a greater sense of threat.

In no area is this more evident than learning. Our learning institutions have

been created in the spirit of research and openness, yet they have

acquired their own neurotic tendencies. Most notable is the strong reaction
to change in the classic models of distributing learning. Models of courses,

programs, and degrees are still central, even though new needs on the

part of learners are creating a climate that requires a more dynamic

alternative.

The environment in which we are immersed has changed. The

social environment has been altered. The world has become networked

and connected. In this environment of colossal change, the design

methodologies used to foster learning remain strangely outdated – created

for a time and need which no longer exist. Domains of learning are

designed to bridge the gap between design approaches and knowledge

needs of academic and corporate learners.

Background of the Study

It needs no description that the teacher is the pivot of any

educational system of the younger students. On him rests the failure or

the success of the system. If the teachers are well educated and if they

are intellectually alive and take keen interest in their job, then only,

success is ensured.

The teacher is a dynamic force of the school. A school without

teacher is just like a body without the soul, a skeleton without flesh and

blood, a shadow without substance. As social engineers, the teachers can

socialize and humanize the young by their man-like qualities

As a future educator, we should know the domains of learning

needed in the classroom and the quality of teaching with the use of it. It

offers the potential to create and implement highly engaging and effective

environment to support a wide array of learning goals.

Alabat Island National High School, which is located in Barangay

Camagong Alabat, Quezon is an institution that offers quality education

wherein students are imbued with knowledge and skills through the aid of

teaching approaches that complement the needs of time. English teachers

use the domains of learning in their teaching to test whether the students’

performances will boost or not.

This is the reason why the researcher became motivated to know

the effect of the types of learning on the attitudes and performance in

English of selected junior students of Alabat Island National High School.

Statement of the Problem

This study attempts to determine the effects of the domains of

learning on the attitudes and performance in English of selected junior

students of Alabat Island National High School for the School Year 2010 -

2011.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the respondent’s profile in terms of sections:

1.1. upper sections; and

1.2 . lower sections?

2. What is the effect of the domains of learning on the attitudes and

performance of selected junior students in English in terms of:

2.1. Cognitive Learning;

2.2. Affective Learning; and

2.3. Psychomotor Learning?

3. Is there a significant difference between effects of the domains of

learning and the attitudes and performance in English of selected

junior students of Alabat Island National High School?

Significance of the Study

The types of learning will stimulate the interest of the students to

learn and create opportunities for students’ collaboration and for them to

take more direct and responsible role in the learning process. It also leads

them to become active, creative and critical thinkers because of improved

understanding and better appreciation of ideas presented.

This study has great importance to the teacher because they can

differentiate ideas and knowledge on how their lessons can be presented

effectively. They are also able to upgrade their skills in content and

medium of instruction for it will give them access to materials and

approaches that will provides students’ with experiences that will lead

them to mastery of scientific concept and processes as well as gaining

authentic knowledge.
This study will serve as baseline information for the administrators

to develop their capacity to undergo such challenging transition together

with appropriate resources. It is also a great help to gain new insights on

how to improve the teaching process of their subordinates thus, it will also

help them to encourage teachers to attend learning programs so that they

can uplift the educational performance of their institution.

The result of this study may serve as additional information for

future researchers who wish to further study the use domains of learning

in facilitating concepts and ideas.

Scope and Limitation

The respondents of this study were selected senior students who

were enrolled in Alabat Island National High School for the School Year

2009 – 2010 coming from upper sections and lower sections. Each of the

selected students will answer the researcher’s made checklist.

For the input, the researcher considered the background and

nature of the respondents and the domains of learning applied. Following

this is the processing stage which he underwent the steps of planning and

preparation and administration of the questionnaire to the students. After

those processes will be the output in the effects of the domains of learning

on the attitudes and performance in English of selected junior students of

Alabat Island National High School for the School Year 2010 - 2011.
Definition of Terms

Psychomotor learning is highly refined ability to feel the

movement of the body and limbs necessary to control the dynamic

movements.

Affective learning is a very complex type of emotional intelligence,

encompassing attitudes, self-esteem, motivation, perceptions, feelings,

and beliefs.

Cognitive learning includes the recall or recognition of specific

facts, procedural patterns, and concepts that serve in the development of

intellectual abilities and skills.

Junior students are the respondents of this study.
