1. The layout of a leather belt drive transmitting 15 kW of power is shown in Fig.
The center distance between the pulleys is twice the diameter of the bigger
pulley. The belt should operate at a velocity of 20 m/s approximately and the
stresses in the belt should not exceed 2.25 N/mm2. The density of leather is 0.95
g/cc and the coefficient of friction is 0.35. The thickness of the belt is 5 mm.
Calculate: (i) the diameter of pulleys; (ii) the length and width of the belt; and
(iii) the belt tensions

2. A flat belt is required to transmit 30 kW from a pulley of 1.5 m effective

diameter running at 300 r.p.m. The angle of contact is spread over 11/24
of the circumference. The coefficient of friction between the belt and
pulley surface is 0.3. Determine, taking centrifugal tension into account,
width of the belt required. It is given that the belt thickness is 9.5 mm,
density of its material is 1100 kg /m3 and the related permissible working
stress is 2.5 MPa.

Calculate the width of 5 mm thick flat belt. Take permissible stress for the
belt material as 2.3 MPa.

4. A belt of 100mm wide and 10mm thick is transmitting power at 1000

m/min. The net driving tension is 2 times the slack side tension. Allowable
stress in the belt material is 2 MPa. Specific weight of the material is 10
kN/m3. Determine the power that can be transmitted by the belt and
velocity at which power can be transmitted.
5. A nylon core flat belt 200 mm wide weighing 20 N/m, connect a 300 mm
diameter pulley to a 900 mm diameter driven pulley at a shaft spacing 6
m, transmits 55.2 kW at a belt speed of 25 m/s. calculate: i) Belt length
and angle of wrap, ii) Belt tensions based on coefficient of friction at 0.38
6. Design a belt drive to transmit 25 kW from a motor shaft rotating at
1500 rpm to a compressor running at 500 rpm. The motor pulley is 96
mm effective diameter and the Centre distance between the shafts is 1.5
m.
7. A lather belt 125 mm wide and 6 mm thick, transmitting power from a
pulley 750 mm diameter which runs at 500 rpm. The angle of lap is 1500
and coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.3. If the
belt density is 1000 kg/m3, and the stress in the belt is not to exceed 2.75
N/mm2, find the power that can be transmitted by the belt. Also find the
initial tension in the belt.
8. Two parallel shafts whose Centre lines are 4.8 m apart, are connected by
an open belt drive. The diameter of the larger pulley is 1.5 m and that of
smaller pulley 1 m. The initial tension in the belt when stationary is 3 kN.
The mass of the belt is 1.5 kg/m length. The coefficient of friction
between the belt and the pulley is 0.3. Taking centrifugal tension into
account, calculate the power transmitted, when the smaller pulley rotates
at 400 r.p.m.

V-BELT DRIVE
1. The following data is given for a V-belt drive connecting a 20 kW motor to a
compressor
Motor-pulley Compressor
pulley
Pitch diameter (mm) 300 900
Speed (rpm) 1440 480
Coefficient of friction 0.2 0.2
The center distance between pulleys is 1 m and the dimensions of the cross-
section of the belt is trapezoidal with parallel side being 12 mm and 22 mm
respectively and depth is 14 mm. The density of the composite belt is 0.97 g/cc
and the allowable tension per belt is 850 N. How many belts are required for
this application?

2. A V-belt is to transmit 20kW from a 250 mm pitch diameter sheave operating

at 1500 rpm to a 900 mm diameter flat pulley. The center distance between the
shafts is 1 m. The groove angle is 400 and coefficient of friction is 0.2 for both
pulleys and sheave combination. The c/s of the belt is 38 mm wide at the top
and 19 mm wide at the bottom by 25 mm deep. Each belt weighs 11 kN/m2 and
allowable tension per belt is 1000 N. How many belts are required?

3. The following data is given for an open-type V-belt drive:

diameter of driving pulley = 200 mm, diameter of driven pulley = 600 mm,
groove angle for sheaves = 34°,mass of belt = 0.5 kg/m, Maximum permissible
tension in belt = 500 N, coefficient of friction = 0.2, contact angle for smaller
pulley = 157°, speed of smaller pulley = 1440 rpm, power to be transmitted =
10 kW, How many V-belts should be used, assuming each belt takes its
proportional part of the load?
4. A compressor, requiring 90 kW, is to run at about 250 r.p.m. The drive is by V-
belts from an electric motor running at 750 r.p.m. The diameter of the pulley on
the compressor shaft must not be greater than 1 m while the centre distance
between the pulleys is limited to 1.75 m. The belt speed should not exceed 1600
m/ min. Determine the number of V-belts required to transmit the power if each
belt has a cross-sectional area of 375 mm2, density 1000 kg/m3 and an allowable
tensile stress of 2.5 MPa. The groove angle of the pulleys is 35°. The coefficient
of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.25. Calculate also the nominal
pitch length of belt.

Selection V-belts from the catalogue of the manufacturer.

5. Select a V-belt drive to transmit 10 kW of power from a pulley of 200 mm

diameter mounted on an electric motor running at 720 rpm to another pulley
mounted on compressor running at 200 rpm. The service is heavy duty varying
from 10 hours to 14 hours per day and centre distance between centre of
pulleys is 600 mm.
6. It is required to select a V-belt drive to connect a 15 kW, 2880 rpm normal
torque A.C. motor to a centrifugal pump, running at approximately 2400 rpm,
for a service of 18 hours per day. The centre distance should be approximately
400 mm. Assume that the pitch diameter of the driving pulley is 125 mm.
7. It is required to design a V-belt drive to connect a 7.5 kW, 1440 rpm induction
motor to a fan, running at approximately 480 rpm, for a service of 24 h per day.
Space is available for a centre distance of about 1 m.
8. It is required to select a V-belt drive from 5 kW normal torque motor, which
runs at 1440 rpm to a light duty compressor running at 970 rpm. The
compressor runs for 24 hours per day. Space is available for a centre distance
of about 500 mm. Assume that the pitch diameter of the driving pulley is 150
mm.
