CIRCLE

A. The Meaning of Circle

The circle is a simple closed curve that is where the points of equal distance are dotted
to a particular point. The same distance is called the radius of the circle and a particular point is
called the center of the circle. The curved lines of both ends meet together forming the
circumference of the circle and the area of the circle (the area of the circle).

B. Part of Circle

1. Centre Point
The center point of the circle is the point located in the middle of the circle. In the figure
above, point O is the center point of the circle, thus, the circle is called the circle O.
2. Radius
The radius of the circle is the line from the center point of the circle to the circle of the
circle. In the figure above, the radius of the circle is represented by the lines OA, OB, OC, and
OD.

3. Diameter
The diameter is a straight line connecting two points on the curve of the circle and through
the center. The AB and CD lines in O circle represent the diameter of the circle. Note that AB =
AO + OB. In other words, the diameter value is twice the value of the radius, it is written that d =
2r.

4. Arc
In a circle, a circular arc is a curved line located on a circular arch and connects any two
points in the arch. In the figure above, the AC curve line, the CB curve, and the BD curve are the
circle O.
5. Chord
The cords of a circular arc are straight lines in a circle connecting two points on a circular
arch. In contrast to the diameter, the bow string does not pass through the center point of the O
circle.
6. Segment
Segment is the area in the circle bounded by bow and bow. In the figure above, the
tarpaulin is shown by the shaded area and is limited by AD arcs and AD arcs.
7. Sector
Sector circle is the area in a circle bounded by two radius of a circle and an arc flanked by
both radius of the circle. In the Figure above, the circular sector is represented by a shaded area
bounded by OC and OB radius and BC arc, called BOC sector.
8. Apothema
Apothema is the line connecting the center of the circle with the cord of the circle. The line
formed is perpendicular to the bowstring. Consider the above Picture carefully. The OF line
represents the apothema line on the O circle.
C. Formula In Circle
 Circle Circumference’s formula is 2𝜋r
 Circle area’s formula is 𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟 2 or ¼ 𝜋d

D. Example
1. Look at the picture of the circle

From the picture, specify:

a. Center points, e. Chord,

b. Radius, f. Segment,
c. diameter, g. Sector,
d. Arc, h. apothema.

Answer:

a. Center points= dot O

b. Radius= lines PU, PQ, and PR

c. Diameter = line RU

d. Arc= curve QR, RS, ST, TU, and UQ

e. Chord = line ST

f. Segment = area bounded by arc ST and chord ST

g. Sector = QPU, QPR, and RPU

h. Apothema = line PV
2. Look at the picture of circle

If the radius of the circle is 10 cm and the length of the chord 16 cm, specify:

a. diameter of circle,

b. length of apothem line.

Answer:

a. The diameter is twice the radius of the circle:

Diameter (d) = 2 × radius

Diameter (d) = 2 × (10 cm)

Diameter (d) = 20 cm

So, diameter of the circle is 20 cm.

b. Look at the OQR triangle. Length OQ = 10 cm and QR = 8 cm.

According to the Pythagorean Theorem:

OR2 = OQ2 – QR2

OR2= (10)2 – (8)2
OR2= 1002 – 642
OR2 = 36 cm2
OR = √36 cm2
OR = 6 cm

So, the length of the apothema line of the circle is 6 cm
