Two of the country’s top

singer-songwriters, Lyle
Lovett and John Hiatt, will
return to the State Theatre
of Ithaca on Sunday to swap
stories and play songs from
their vast catalogs in an
acoustic duo setting.
Lovett, who hails from
Texas, has drawn on the
Lone Star State’s Western
swing traditions for his
recordings with His Large
Band. But he also integrates
folk, blues and other rootsy
influences into his songs,
which he sings in his dis-
tinctive voice.
Hiatt, a native of Indiana
who has lived in Nashville
since 1971, has gained rec-
ognition both through his

5 Irish Tenors harmonize on first U.S. tour
CHRIS KOCHER
CKOCHER@ITHACAJOURNAL.COM

Over the past 25 years, a re-

surgence of interest in Irish music
and culture in America has led
many acts to make the journey
across the pond. From Riverdance
and Lord of the Dance to Celtic
Woman and Celtic Thunder, each
has put its own particular spin on
the tradition while also bringing it
into the 21st century.
The latest singers to vie for lis-
teners’ ears are the Five Irish Ten-
ors, who will stop at Binghamton
University’s Anderson Center next
week as part of their first North
American tour.
Members of the quintet — David
Martin, Morgan Crowley, Ciarán
Kelly, Alan Leech and George Hut-
ton — hail from diverse back-
grounds of musical theater, classi-
cal music and, of course, traditional
Irish music. Each of them has had a
solo career in the U.S., Ireland and
elsewhere, and they combined their
