Dear Students

The School of Modern Greek Language welcomes you to the Summer Seminar of Greek
Language and Civilization. Following you may find some useful information concerning
the program.

About your scholarship


You have been selected to attend the Summer Seminar of Greek Language and Civilization
as scholarship holders of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, Culture and
Sports. Your scholarship covers:

-tuition fees for language classes


-participation in the cultural activities
-accommodation and full board

Important notes

-You have to confirm your participation in the Seminar until 7th June 2013. In case of
cancellation or late arrival, please, inform us the soonest possible.

-Upon your arrival, you need to submit to the Secretariat a copy of your passport or
identity card and a small photo for the completion of your enrolment.

-You are kindly requested to follow closely the announcements that are issued by the
Secretariat.

About the program

Language classes
Language classes include lessons of language instruction, pronunciation lessons, language
laboratory and lessons of language cultural instruction. All the above mentioned classes
consist of 80 hours of instruction in total.

Classes will be held at the School’s classrooms in the University Campus (old and new
building of Philosophy Faculty) from Monday to Friday between 08.30 – 12.00.

Attendance of the classes is required (at least 80% of the total hours of instruction). In case
of absence, students have to inform the Secretariat one day before.

Certificate of Attendance
A Certificate of Attendance (in Greek language) will be issued to the students, at the end of
the program, on the terms that they:
-attend, at least, the 80% of the total hours of instruction and
-participate successfully in the final test.

Trips & cultural activities


Following you may find a short description of the trips and cultural activities that will be
organized during the seminar. Please note that a detailed schedule will be given to you
upon your arrival.

Where to stay
The School has arranged your accommodation at the University’s Dormitories (in Greek
“Fititikes Esties”) located in the northern part of the University Campus, 10 min. walking
distance from the School, for the period from 7th July to 3rd August 2013.
The Dormitories are open on a 24-hours basis, so you can check-in at any time you arrive.
Further information about your stay at the Dormitories will be sent to you in due time.
In case you arrive before 7th July or wish to stay longer than 3rd August, following you may
find useful information about hotels in the city: www.all-hotels.gr

Where to eat
The School has made arrangements for your meals at the University’s Student Club
(located in the University Campus) and at the restaurant “Kamares” (located opposite
Philosophy Faculty).
Meals will be served as following:

-Breakfast 07.30 – 08.30 am.
-Lunch 12.30 – 14.00 pm.
-Dinner 19.30 – 20.30 pm.

 Restaurant “Kamares” (weekends)


-Breakfast 07.30 – 08.30 am. (Sundays: 09.00 – 10.00 am)
-Lunch 12.30 – 13.30 pm.
-Dinner 20.00 – 21.00 pm.

During day-trips there will be special arrangements for which you will be informed on
time.

About the School of Modern Greek


The School of Modern Greek Language was founded at
Aristotle University in 1970 and has been operating ever
since under the supervision of the Faculty of Philosophy.
The School offers courses in Greek language and culture to
foreign students and also to students of Greek origin, who
intend to study in Greek Educational Institutions, or wish,
through the Greek language, to familiarize with Greece and
its culture (ancient, byzantine and modern).
Every year, a number of language courses, relative to the
various needs of the students, are offered.

About Aristotle University of Thessaloniki


The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is a State University and the largest University in

About Thessaloniki

Getting to Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki as most modern cities today may be reached by plane, train or bus.

By plane
The easiest way to get to Thessaloniki is by a direct fly to the city’s airport called
“Makedonia International Airport” (www.thessalonikiairport.com) serving both
international and domestic flights. Most major airline companies have direct flights to
Thessaloniki or flights via Athens. The “Makedonia International Airport” (SKG) is the
second biggest airport in Greece, located 14 km East of the city center.

By train
The national Railway company is called ‘OSE” (www.ose.gr). Thessaloniki’s Railway
Station is centrally located (28, Monastiriou street) and is conveniently connected with the
rest of the city via public transportation. If you are coming to Thessaloniki via Athens the
“Intercity” trains are suggested in order to travel quicker.

By bus
The national bus company is called “KTEL” (www.ktel.org). If you are coming to
Thessaloniki via Athens, it is a 511 km (apprx. 6 hours) journey.
In order to travel by bus to Thessaloniki or from Thessaloniki to any destination in Greece
you may find all the necessary information by contacting the “Makedonia” Intercity bus
station (“KTEL”) of Thessaloniki (www.ktelmakedonia.gr/).

By ship
Thessaloniki’s port is connected by sea with other major ports and islands. (www.thpa.gr)

Getting to the University Dormitories (by bus)

From the Airport


You may take the buses No. 78 (78N during night hours) from “Makedonia Airport” to the
center of the city and take off at bus-stop “ΧΑΝΘ”- YMCA, then you take bus No. 15 (on
Aggelaki str.) to the Dormitories.

From the Railway Station


You may take the buses No. 2, 10, 14, 17 and take off at bus-stop “Kolomvou” on Egnatia
str., then you take bus No. 15 (on Antigonidon str.) to the Dormitories.

From Makedonia Intercity bus station (“KTEL”)


You may take the bus No. 8 and take off at bus-stop “Kamara” (on Egnatia str.), then you
take bus No. 15 (on Aggelaki str.) to the Dormitories.

You will find bus tickets at “ΟΑΣΘ” ticket houses or the kiosks on the streets (one ticket
costs 0,80 Euro- present rate) or at the automatic ticket machines in the buses (one ticket
costs 0,90 Euro).

Getting to the University Dormitories (by TAXI)


TAXI cars in Thessaloniki are coloured blue and white and may be stopped in the street in
order to get you anywhere in or out of Thessaloniki. The minimum fee for destination into
the city is 3,16 Euro, while the fee differs after 12.00 o’clock at night or for destinations
such as the airport, the train and the bus stations. It also differs for destinations outside
Thessaloniki.
A TAXI fee from the Airport and Makedonia Bus Station to the University Dormitories
may vary from 10 to 20 Euro.
A TAXI fee from the Railway Station to the University Dormitories may vary from 8 to 12
Euro.
