Dear Students
The School of Modern Greek Language welcomes you to the Summer Seminar of Greek
Language and Civilization. Following you may find some useful information concerning
the program.
Important notes
-You have to confirm your participation in the Seminar until 7th June 2013. In case of
cancellation or late arrival, please, inform us the soonest possible.
-Upon your arrival, you need to submit to the Secretariat a copy of your passport or
identity card and a small photo for the completion of your enrolment.
-You are kindly requested to follow closely the announcements that are issued by the
Secretariat.
Language classes
Language classes include lessons of language instruction, pronunciation lessons, language
laboratory and lessons of language cultural instruction. All the above mentioned classes
consist of 80 hours of instruction in total.
Classes will be held at the School’s classrooms in the University Campus (old and new
building of Philosophy Faculty) from Monday to Friday between 08.30 – 12.00.
Attendance of the classes is required (at least 80% of the total hours of instruction). In case
of absence, students have to inform the Secretariat one day before.
Certificate of Attendance
A Certificate of Attendance (in Greek language) will be issued to the students, at the end of
the program, on the terms that they:
-attend, at least, the 80% of the total hours of instruction and
-participate successfully in the final test.

Where to stay
The School has arranged your accommodation at the University’s Dormitories (in Greek
“Fititikes Esties”) located in the northern part of the University Campus, 10 min. walking
distance from the School, for the period from 7th July to 3rd August 2013.
The Dormitories are open on a 24-hours basis, so you can check-in at any time you arrive.
Further information about your stay at the Dormitories will be sent to you in due time.
In case you arrive before 7th July or wish to stay longer than 3rd August, following you may
find useful information about hotels in the city: www.all-hotels.gr
Where to eat
The School has made arrangements for your meals at the University’s Student Club
(located in the University Campus) and at the restaurant “Kamares” (located opposite
Philosophy Faculty).
Meals will be served as following:
During day-trips there will be special arrangements for which you will be informed on
time.
About Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is the second largest city of Greece with approximately 1,5 million
inhabitants and the capital of Macedonia the largest region of Greece. Founded in 315 B.C.
by King Kassander and named after his wife, who was Alexander the Great's half-sister,
the city is today a major economic, political and cultural centre of Greece. It attracts
hundreds of thousands of visitors every year since it is famous for its ancient Greek and

Getting to Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki as most modern cities today may be reached by plane, train or bus.
By plane
The easiest way to get to Thessaloniki is by a direct fly to the city’s airport called
“Makedonia International Airport” (www.thessalonikiairport.com) serving both
international and domestic flights. Most major airline companies have direct flights to
Thessaloniki or flights via Athens. The “Makedonia International Airport” (SKG) is the
second biggest airport in Greece, located 14 km East of the city center.
By train
The national Railway company is called ‘OSE” (www.ose.gr). Thessaloniki’s Railway
Station is centrally located (28, Monastiriou street) and is conveniently connected with the
rest of the city via public transportation. If you are coming to Thessaloniki via Athens the
“Intercity” trains are suggested in order to travel quicker.
By bus
The national bus company is called “KTEL” (www.ktel.org). If you are coming to
Thessaloniki via Athens, it is a 511 km (apprx. 6 hours) journey.
In order to travel by bus to Thessaloniki or from Thessaloniki to any destination in Greece
you may find all the necessary information by contacting the “Makedonia” Intercity bus
station (“KTEL”) of Thessaloniki (www.ktelmakedonia.gr/).
By ship
Thessaloniki’s port is connected by sea with other major ports and islands. (www.thpa.gr)
You will find bus tickets at “ΟΑΣΘ” ticket houses or the kiosks on the streets (one ticket
costs 0,80 Euro- present rate) or at the automatic ticket machines in the buses (one ticket
costs 0,90 Euro).
