Feminism

Social and developmental psychologist, Inga Schowengerdt said in an interview in Huffington

Post (2015) that feminism is all about equality rather than a specific gender. Also stated in her

interview that she believes that feminism as of now is quite debatable in regards to the

continuous resistance because of the misconceptions that feminism is about being anti-male and

is for women only, opposing what it truly calls for which is equal treatment. Inga said that this

affects and discourages both men and women to identify themselves as feminist.

Feminism is about women having a choice, this is what actress and women advocate emma

watson said in an interview for vanity fair (2017). She also said that feminism is not something

that you use to hurt other women with, it’s about equal rights, liberty and having freedom.

In an article by Roxane Gay (2012) there are ideas that support and broadens the statement that

emma said which was five years apart. It is written in Roxane's article that there are no ideal or

essential feminism, that there are no specific way to act or to live as a feminist because that

defeats the idea of individuality, and other women should not use it to discriminate.

In the Philippines the issue of gender inequality is also a problem, the ideology of women being

inferior and treated as mere objects, even though this kind of thing is fading, still there are

instances when people look down on women. And the standards of a good woman in the
philippines is often portrayed like maria clara from noli me tangere, which sets a limit to women.

(Grimwald, 2017)

As stated in an article by local artist Nikki Luna, the label feminist has been shied away because

of the negative connotations it comes with, feminist are often depicted as angry and man hating

women who doesnt know their places. Women are expected to act as how society dictates, to

stay at home and do chores, take care of the young ones while the husband provides for the

family. nikki also writes that a feminist can come from different backgrounds, a mom, a student,

no matter your religion, color or nationality.

In August 23, 2013, Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo, the current vice president of the philippines

said that feminism is not about making our gender superior or for us to avoid abuse, it’s about

building connections for better understanding. Also stating that our ability as women to shape

and build our homes is essential in growing our society. Robredo vowed to do her best, for she

said that she saw too many women lose their ability to fight and voice out their stories.

Just last January 17, a worldwide march called women’s march was held in Washington D.C.

Representing advocacies about women’s rights and other issues like climate change and the lgbt

community. Juliet Miller, a public figure said in an interview for csmonitor that she thinks that to

be called a feminist, one should be aware of issues concerning women and wanting other women

to grow. To empower and prove that we are equals.
