Among the prominent energy sources available in the Philippines are hydroelectricity (Angat Dam in Bulacan, La

Mesa Reservoir in Quezon City), geothermal energy (Malitbog Power Station in Leyte), and wind energy (Burgos
Wind Farm in Ilocos Norte).

Energy Source Electricity Generation Advantages Disadvantages

Geothermal Utilizes underground - free and renewable source - limited to areas near
reservoirs of hot - clean tectonic plate boundaries
water and steam to - requires little space - exploration is expensive
turn turbines
Solar Photovoltaic cells in - free and renewable source - expensive
solar panels convert - clean - lower production during
sunlight into storms and winter seasons
electricity; battery
banks are used to
keep the power even
at night
Wind Kinetic energy from - free and renewable source - noisy
the winds rotates the - clean - lower production if winds
propeller of a huge - requires little space are not strong
turbine which is
connected to a
generator
Fossil Fuels Crude oil, coal, or - cheap - non-renewable
natural gas formed - generate large amounts of - highly polluting
from decomposition energy
of buried organisms
and is then burned to
release energy
Nuclear Utilizes fuel from - generates huge amounts of - non-renewable
Energy radioactive materials energy - requires careful
(e.g. uranium, - reliable management
plutonium) by splitting
their atoms in a
process called nuclear
fission
Biomass Uses organic matter - renewable - not entirely clean
such as wood, - resources are widely - may lead to deforestation
degradable waste, and available - requires huge space
crops as fuel - promotes recycling

1. Hydroelectricity, geothermal energy, solar energy, wind energy , and biomass are non-polluting and
renewable energy sources.
2. Geothermal energy, fossil fuels, nuclear energy, and biomass are energy sources that use steam to
turn turbines of generators.
3. Giant windmills can be located in the Burgos Wind Farm in Ilocos, Caparispisan Wind Farm in Ilocos
Norte, the Wind Energy Power System (WEPS) in Puerto Galera, Mindoro Oriental, and Pililla Wind
Farm Pililla, Rizal.
4. Aside from saving energy at home, the government should continue to tap the available energy
sources in the country and support the local private companies that would like to fund and partner with
the government in tapping these available sources of energy in the Philippines.
