1. Comprehension Questions 1. Observational
Assessment Scale: none

Subject Matter/Content:
Prerequisites:
 Students must have a basic idea what a president is
 Students must have a basic idea that George Washington was a president
Key Vocabulary:
 Army- a group of people trained to protect our country
 Elected- chosen by voting
 President- the leader of our country
Content/Facts:
 George Washington was in charge of the American army when we were at war with England
 The soldiers were cold and hungry so George Washington got more clothes and food for them
 The soldiers trusted him and he told them what to do in battle leading us to victory of the war
 George Washington became our first president
 George had helpers and was patient and listened to what all of them had to say, then he made
the final decisions for our country
 George Washington was president for 4 years and then people elected him again so he was
president for 4 MORE years
 People wanted to elect him for a 3rd time but Washington told them it was someone else’s turn
which set a great example for leaders after him
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
1. Say to the class I want you to raise your hand if your mom, dad, or grandparent has an
important job to go to everyday.
2. Then say now I want you to raise your hand if you have ever had to do an important job such
as cleaning your room, walking the dog, etc.
3. Now have the students turn to a neighbor and tell them one important job you have done.
4. Then say well, today we are going to talk about a man who had a very important job to do. His
name is George Washington and he looks like this (show picture of George Washington).

Development/Teaching Approaches
1. Show poster board (Know Wonder Learn). with a heading of George Washington
2. Then say does anybody know who he was or what his job was?
3. Do not elaborate yet and have the students raise their hands and tell you anything else they
know about George Washington. Write under “know” what children tell you. Then ask them is
there anything you might “wonder” about George Washington. (you might want to say
something like I wonder if he was married) Then write your wonder question under wonder.
4. Then Tell them we will come back to the learn column after the video.
5. Once everyone is done contributing, tell students that being President of the United States
means being a leader and making decisions for the whole country.
6. Tell them George Washington was our very first president. Ask the students if they ever got to
vote for something (i.e. their favorite color, what to eat for dinner that night)
7. Tell them that we do the same thing and vote for presidents. If a president wants to get the
most votes, he has to be a good leader.
8. Ask what kind of person George Washington probably was like if he won the votes? (answers
should include things like kind, sharing, honest, etc.) Now we are on our 45th president, and
his name is Donald Trump.
9. Tell them they are going to watch on the smart board our first president, George Washington,
and they should pay close attention because afterwards we are going to finish our chart with
the new information and retell some of the facts we have learned.
Play George Washington video on smart board.
After watching video return to the chart and have students tell you any other information they
learned about our first president. Also have the students raise hand and retell parts of George
Washington.
10. (If no time then do this the next day for morning work) Hand out worksheet with George
Washington with six bubbles around him
11. Tell students they are going to come up with 6 words that describe George Washington based
on what we learned today
12. Assist students as needed
13. Tell the students they can color it after they are done writing their words

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
1. Have some of the students share their craft and what they wrote
2. Remind the students why George Washington was a great leader
3. Tell the students that tomorrow we will be learning about Abraham Lincoln, the other person
that Presidents Day was created for

Accommodations/Differentiation:
 For students who are advanced, have them go on the scholastic app on their ipads and read and
play the games on the George Washington article

Washington
