1. Introduction
Pharmacists have created inroads into more complex patient-centered modes of pharmacy
practice (i.e. medication therapy management, pharmacist health coaching, providing
immunizations and in some areas, medication prescribing). Along with these newer practice
domains comes the need for more sophisticated modes of communicating with patients. A novel
approach to helping patients has been used with success in medicine, dentistry, psychology and
social work with a unique therapeutic communication method known as Eriksonian Hypnosis.

This is an un-tapped set of communication skills for the pharmacy profession and holds promise,
for those skilled in its use, to help patients overcome many different types of health-related
issues. When some people think of hypnosis they think of the stage hypnotist whose job it is to
entertain an audience by making participants behave in strange ways. However, clinical hypnosis
is an empirically supported therapeutic tool to help patients access their unconscious
psychological resources.

Eriksonian Hypnosis works in three phases. First, the practitioner creates a state of attentive
concentration in the patient. Then, through the use of a specialized form of communication
known as hypnotic language patterns (HLP), a patient's conscious state is bypassed, decreasing
conscious resistance. Once these two phases are completed, the unconscious becomes highly
susceptible to the practitioner's verbal suggestions. In medicine and dentistry, hypnotic
suggestions have been widely researched and used to facilitate therapeutic changes in feelings,
behavior and physiology.
