STUDY GUIDE Chapter 2 & 3 - POPULATION & MIGRATION

1. What are the five regions of population concentration? What are the similarities in their
geographic location (Specifically look at East Asia and North America)? What are differences
that you notice?
2. Explain the relationship between climate and population distribution. Define Ecumene.
3. What is carrying capacity and how does it relate to overpopulation?
4. What is the name of the scientific study of population? Why do geographers believe this to be
important?
5. Explain the five stages of demographic transition. Give an example for each stage.
6. Compare the transition of MDC’s and LDC’s in the DTM. What factors led to transition? Where
is most of the developed world located?
7. What does fertility rate mean? What factors led to a decrease in TFR? What is so important
about a fertility rate of 2.1?
8. Explain dependency ages in relationship to MDCs and LDCs
9. What is arithmetic density? What does physiological density tell geographers? Agricultural?
10. What does a population pyramid look like for a developed and developing country?
(dependency rate, age distribution, gender distribution)
11. How do the following things typically impact population pyramids? (migrant workers, war, baby
booms, the one child policy)
12. Who was Thomas Malthus? What do Neo-Malthusians believe? What are 2 reasons people

implement?
15. Cyclical vs Periodic Movement. What is the relationship of activity space?
16. What type of movement is transhumance?
17. Types of migration: transnational, internal, chain, step, seasonal agricultural, and rural to
urban.
18. Explain the importance of push and pull factors.
19. Why have we seen such a large movement from rural to urban environments globally?
20. Be able to identify examples of migration as discussed in the text and in class
21. What are refugees? Where do they usually come from and where do they go?
22. Why do migrants settle in areas that are not their desired destination?
23. Ravenstein’s Characteristics of Migration. Who is more likely to migrate long distances?
Are males or females more likely to migrate? How does the origin of Mexican immigrants
follow Ravenstein’s expectations?

How has it impacted the United States? Explain the factors for internal migration in the
United States?
25. Why has Mexico played a significant role in the US immigration patterns?

this migration? Where do Muslim immigrants often come from?
27. What are Quota Laws? Why would countries institute Quota Laws?
28. What is brain drain and how has the United States contributed to this?
