1)SAARC satellite set for lift-of:- The ‘South Asia Satellite,’ which
India has built for use by countries of the South Asian Association
for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) will be launched on May 5.

Advantages of this Satellite :- “Natural resources mapping,


telemedicine, education, deeper IT connectivity or fostering
people-topeople contact — this satellite will prove to be a boon in
the progress of the entire region.

It is an important step by India to enhance co-operation with the


entire South Asia.

***All SAARC countries, except Pakistan, have joined it.

Some Technical Aspects:- The 2,230-kg satellite was built by the


Indian Space Research Organisation and has 12 Ku-band
transponders.

What is a Transponder:- A wireless communications


device usually attached to a satellite. A transponder receives and
transmits radio signals at a prescribed frequency range.
After receiving the signal a transponder will at the same time
broadcast the signal at a different frequency.
The term is a combination of the words transmitter and responder.

Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) devices can be matched
with the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) count.

ABOUT NTCA : The National Tiger Conservation


Authority(NTCA) was established in December 2005 following
a recommendation of the Tiger Task Force.

The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 was amended to provide for


constituting the National Tiger Conservation Authority responsible
for implementation of the Project Tiger plan to protect endangered
tigers. The National Tiger Conservation Authority is set up
under the Chairmanship of the Minister for Environment and
Forests.
 It approves the State Govt. Plans for Tiger Conservation.
 Lays down Standards and Measures.
 Also Prepares Report to be laid down in front of
Parliament.

Project Tiger was Launched in 1973.


NTCA at Present is a Statutory Body under MOEF.

What are InvITs?


InvITs are similar to mutual funds. While mutual funds provide
an opportunity to invest in equity stocks, an InvIT allows one to
invest in infrastructure projects such as road and power.

How do InvITs work?


InvITs raise funds from a large number of investors and
directly invest in infrastructure projects or through a special
purpose vehicle.

Two types of InvITs have been allowed:=


one, which invests in completed and revenue generation
infrastructure projects;
Second, which has the flexibility to invest in completed or
under-construction projects.
InvITs are registered as trusts with SEBI.

1)Fortiied foods to tackle malnutrition:-

What is Malnutrition:- Lack of proper nutrition, caused by not


having enough to eat, not eating enough of the right
things/balanced diet.
Sometimes the Food is also deficient in various Micronutrients
like Iron , Zinc and that also leads to Malnutrition. Similary Vitamin
Deficiency in the Food.

For instance, iron deficiency leads to critical problems during


pregnancy, and not enough Vitamin A can lead to poor vision,
infections, and skin problems.

What is Food Fortification:- Food fortification or enrichment is


the process of adding micronutrients (essential trace elements
and vitamins) to food which may or may not be earlier present
in the food.

FSSAI released a set of Standards and measures regarding


Fortification.

About FSSAI:- Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is


an autonomous body established under the Ministry of Health &
Family Welfare The FSSAI has been established under the Food
Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
2)News Regarding Great Indian Bustard:- The Rajasthan
government will set up a captive breeding centre for the great
Indian bustard in an attempt to boost the wild population of the
country's most critically endangered bird.

Conservation will take place from 2 facilities :- Captive Breeding


Centre at Kota and Hatchery at Jaisalmer.
GIB is the State Bird of Rajasthan.

Indian Ocean.

Decadal Swing here refers to the Rise and Fall in the North
Indian Ocean Sea Level.

Scientists say such a ‘decadal swing’ in north Indian Ocean is unique


and never observed in others.

What is North Indian Ocean:- The NIO consists of the Arabian Sea,
the Bay of Bengal and part of the Indian Ocean up till the 5°S
latitude.

NROL-76.

SpaceX is headed by Elon Musk.

Ramanujacharya was born in 1017 AD.

Welfare:- Under One IP- Two Dispensaries scheme ESIC has given

1)Museum of Weights and Measures:-The first museum of


weights and measures in the country sits in the Chamarajpeth
market area of Davangere, Karnataka. Called Tula Bhavan.

The museum entered the Limca Book of Records in 2016.

2)Australia's visa policy is a concern for India :-

Background :- Recently Australia started the 457 Policy.


What is 457 Policy :- Scrapping of the “457” visa policy that
benefited skilled Indian IT workers.

As part of the new policy, the tenure of the visas was to be


reduced from four to two years. The notification also
announced an increase of visa fees.

3)Shikara Boat Festival is held in the Dal Lake of jammu and


Kashmir.

Shikaras are a type of wooden Boat.

4)‘Vidya-Veerta Abhiyan’ (Knowledge-Valour Campaign):-


Colleges and university campuses across India will soon see
“walls of heroes”/‘Wall of Valour’ being erected to reinforce
respect for war veterans and martyrs in young minds.

Under the campaign, universities will set up walls measuring


15X20 feet featuring portraits of the 21 awardees of the Param
Vir Chakra, the highest wartime gallantry award.

5)Madhya Pradesh will be the first State to switch to the


January-December financial year from the present April-March
cycle.

6)India will unveil a new series of Index of Industrial


Production with a base year 2011-12 on May 9 with an aim to map
economic activities more accurately.

1)Endangered dholes to run free in Eastern Ghats:-


About Dhole :- They are Protected under Schedule 2 of the
Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and listed as ‘endangered’ by
the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). They
are also called Asiatic Wild Dog.

The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP)in Vishakhapatnam


(A.P), running a conservation breeding centre for the species, plans
to reintroduce a pack of 16 into the forests.
2)BrahMos missile achieves rare feat:- Again a Successful
Launch of Land Attack Cruise Missile Variant of the BrahMos.

The missile is capable of being launched from land, sea, sub-sea


and air.

Brahmos is the result of Joint Collaboration of India and Russia.

3)Package to resolve NPAs gets Cabinet nod :-

What will Package do?:- The package, which includes an


ordinance to amend the Banking Regulation Act of 1949 to
empower the Reserve Bank of India to take more actions to
check bad loans.

Some issues with the Banking Sector :- The economic survey of


2016-17 has pointed out the twin balance sheet problem — that
is, stressed companies on one hand and NPA-laden banks on the
other — and advocates that a centralised Public Sector Asset
Rehabilitation Agency (PARA) be established to deal with the
problem of bad loans.

What is UDAN: Regional Connectivity scheme.

aircraft to fly under the scheme, increasing route exclusivity for

Some highlights of New Steel Policy


Ø The Indian steel sector has grown rapidly over the past few
years and presently it is the third largest steel producer globally,
contributing to about 2% of the country's GDP. India has also
crossed 100 MT mark for production for sale in 2016-17.

Ø The New Steel Policy, 2017 aspires to achieve 300MT of steel-


making capacity by 2030. This would translate into additional
investment of Rs. 10 lakh Crore by 2030-31.

SAMPADA (Scheme For Agro-Marine Processing And
Development Of Agro-Processing Clusters) :- The SAMPADA is a
comprehensive package to give a renewed thrust to the food
processing sector in the country.

SAMPADA is an umbrella scheme incorporating ongoing schemes of


the Ministry likeMega Food Parks, Integrated Cold Chain and
Value Addition Infrastructure, Food Safety and Quality Assurance
Infrastructure, etc.
