Overview
This popular course will follow the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s rigorous standardized course and text in
the fundamental principles of critical care. This comprehensive course is designed to prepare non-intensivists to
deliver the first 24 hours of care for the critically ill or injured patient. Two days of lecture and skill-based training
will be taught by Essentia Health experts in Trauma, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Infectious Disease,
Pulmonary Medicine, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Cardiology, Neurosurgery and Ethics.

Learning Objectives
At the completion of the course, learners will be able to:
• Prioritize assessment needs for the critically ill patient
• Select appropriate diagnostic tests
• Identify and respond to significant changes in the unstable patient
• Recognize and initiate management of acute life-threatening conditions
• D
 etermine the need for expert consultation and/or patient transfer and prepare the practitioner
for optimally accomplishing transfer

Course Agenda
Requirements for successful course completion are to attend all didactic sessions, successfully complete all skill
stations, and achieve a score of 70% or higher on the post-test. Didactic lectures and skill stations include:
• Seriously Ill Patient • Neurologic Support
• Airway Management • Basic Trauma and Burn Support
• Cardiopulmonary/Cerebral Resuscitation • Acute Coronary Syndromes
• Acute Respiratory Failure • Life-Threatening Infections, including Sepsis
• Mechanical Ventilation • Electrolyte and Metabolic Disturbances
• Monitoring Oxygen Balance and Acid-Base Status • Critical Care in Pregnancy and Infants
• Shock Management • Ethics
