Lesson 1: Introduction to wellness

Outcomes:
- Allow students to become comfortable with me and the new class atmosphere
- B11-1-01 Increase awareness of personal wellness, as well as personal and family health
history. (GLO: B3)
- B11-1-02: Develop a personal wellness plan. (GLOs: B3, B5)
- Understand the routines involved in using and adding entries to their science notebooks,
including use of a table of contents and types of entries.

Before Purchase duotangs ( fill with 15 sheets of lined paper) 30


Create example duotangs

Ice breakers: Never Have I ever - set chairs up in big circle rulers
with someone in the middle. They say something that they have 5 min
NEVER done. The people sitting on the outside get up and
switch chairs if they HAVE DONE that thing. You must move at
least 2 chairs over, last person standing goes in middle.

ACTIVATE : Group Discussion on Wellness

Details ● In groups of 4 take 3 minutes to create a definition of 10 min


wellness without using technology.
● Share these views of wellness with class.
● Give a definition of wellness. (Keep it on the board)

ACQUIRE: Mind Map

Details ● In the same groups get students to create an “aesthetic” mind Example 30 min
map of what Wellness involves and how it could be related to of mind
science. map
● Show example and explain a mind map.
● Indicate that they have 20 minutes to create one and then the
class will vote on their favourite to be displayed.

APPLY: Wellness portfolio

Details ● Before giving students their own notebooks, tell the whole 20 min
class about the science notebooks and the types of activities
during which they will use these notebook
○ Hand out notebooks and tell them what topics we have
planned for this block.
● Have a completed example available and tell them they will
be setting up the inside of their notebooks (table of contents,
page numbers and key)
● Circulate around the room to be sure that students are on
task.

CLOSURE

Details ● Start with self-checkup in class and add to portfolio 15 min


● Give the homework of Family medical History consult

Details - Formative assessment will be done as the students are


working in groups to observe their cooperation and creativity.
-Have an understanding of what wellness means and complete
the checklist
- Students will have a notebook prepared and ready for its first
scientific entry!
-The Family Medical History will be included in the summative
assessment of their wellness portfolio

This class went really well, my timing was on point and I was able to manage the kids well. I
enjoyed the icebreaker and the students were pretty engaged. In the future I will try to make
sure that I have digital visual examples for everything and display them (visual beings) - on that
note, when giving students a specific time to complete something in put a digital clock on the
screen so they can manage their own time.
