OUR PROFESSOR
Q: Tell us about yourself.
K.K: I was born in Alor Setar on the 9th June 1956. My parents are both from Alor Setar. My father worked for the government printing office
as a compositor. My mother was a housewife. I come from a family of seven children, two brothers and four sisters. I went to the Tunku Abdul
Halim primary school from 1963 to 1968. My secondary school education was at the Sultan Abdul Hamid College from 1969 to 1975 where I
did my form 1 to form 6 studies. I was offered to study at the Universiti Putra Malaysia in 1976 in the Bachelor of Science, Resource Economics
Program. After completing my bachelor’s degree I took up an offer to be a tutor at Universiti Putra Malaysia in 1980.
I was offered an Agricultural Development Council (ADC) fellowship to study for a Masters Degree in Natural Resource Management, at
the University of New England, Armidale, Australia in 1982. After completing the masters degree I was offered the position of a lecturer at
the Faculty of Economics and Management, Univeristi Putra Malaysia. I obtained an International Development Research Center (IDRC)
scholarship to pursue PhD studies at the University of Rhode Island, USA in 1989. I continued to work at UPM after completing my PhD
studies. While at UPM, I had the opportunity to attend a training on Business Process Reengineering at the Judge Business School, University
of Cambridge in 1995. I was later appointed as an Associate Professor in 1995. I left UPM in 1999 to join the World Fish Center as a Senior
Research Scientist. I returned to academia again when I joined UUM as a contract professor in 2010.

Q: What is your current research focused on?

K.K: My current research is focused on the area of Environmental Sustainability and Development. I have received grants from local and
international agencies to examine issues of environmental sustainability. One such area I am currently looking at is the issue of economic
growth and pollution. Can growth be obtained with minimal pollution and when should countries focus on environmental protection
activities? I have published articles in this area in research journals together with my PhD research students. I also work on issues of fisheries
economics and management. More recently I worked on the issue of fisheries subsidies and its impact on the welfare of fishers and the fishery
resource system.

Q: What are you passionate about?

K.K: I am passionate about seeing a more just world and about improving the wellbeing of people who are caught in poverty and in
circumstances that prevent them from realizing their full potential as human beings. I hope to contribute towards solving the problems of
poverty through research and education. I believe in improving the capabilities of people through the knowledge of science.

Q: How does your research affect people, society and nation?

K.K: The research we do addresses problems of society and governments in their efforts to overcome poverty and inequality in society. We try
to understand where the constraints and barriers are and suggest policies to governments, citizens and businesses. We also train our students
in undertaking independent scientific research to address the problems faced by citizens, governments and businesses. Policy makers can
use the outcomes of the research to formulate better policies and also use resources more effectively to address the problems faced by
society in general.

Q: What is your teaching philosophy?

K.K: Teaching is a core function of the university. Students are the main reason why we are here in the University. So we have to ensure that
the students benefit the most during the time they are in the University. The interaction and engagement the student experience while at
the university will determine their ability to deal with the problems that they will face in their workplace and life later when they leave the
university. We have enormous responsibility to ensure that students learn and transform themselves while at the University to become capable
human beings who will provide solutions to the many problems people face in the world.

Q: If you can change one thing in the world, what would it be?
K.K: I would like to reduce human suffering in the world and use education and research as a way to help mankind solve many of the
problems that arises out of ignorance and lack of understanding of the causes of the suffering. In the university we teach students to be
aware of the many different circumstances people are caught in and to have compassion for human suffering and help as much as possible
to overcome the suffering through our research work and concern for others in the world.

Q: Where do you see UUM in research and publication in 5 years time?

K.K: UUM has done very well over the past decade and has achieved a level of recognition and achievement that one can be proud of.
For a young university the research culture has been well developed and I think over the next 5 years the University will gain more ground
in establishing itself as a premier management university. The leadership and strategic planning have helped in focusing the university to
achieve the targets and it will continue to yield good results by producing excellent students and researchers in the coming years. The
university has also been very receptive to change and is responding to the needs of the rapidly changing economy and the developments
in the new digital economy.

Q: What must be done to achieve this intention?

K.K: There will be a need for more focus on research that contributes to society directly and helps to solve immediate local problems. This will
lead to the University becoming more relevant and useful to the society and community around it. Greater engagement with the community
and businesses will enable the university to remain a focal point for social transformation and support and as a provider of solutions for
business and community problems.

A ‘SMART’ Way for

By : Dr. Mazni Omar Designing Effective Dashboard of
Information Systems

Dr. Mazni Omar is a Senior Lecturer at the College of Arts & Sciences (UUM CAS) and
Deputy Director of Corporate Planning Division at Institute of Quality Management (IPQ)
from 2015-2016.

By : Dr. Mazni Omar

Managers must have reliable and timely information to make the right decision. In information systems, a dashboard can be used as a tool
to manage the information needed. Dashboard is a software application that displays relevant information on the user interface (panel),
allowing informed decision-making related to organizational performance. It offers a broad overview of the available information by
extracting data from multiple database sources. In order to be usable, dashboard must be able to capture, manipulate, analyze and display
the required information. Thus, dashboard should be designed accordingly.

In order to produce a good dashboard design, a ‘SMART’ (S – Synergetic, M – Monitor, A – Accuracy, R – Responsive, and T – Timely) guideline
is introduced. Synergetic is one of the major dashboard components. It combines multiple facets of information before displaying the
information in a coherent view. By having a single interface, user can easily navigate and use the information to perform further actions on
the relevant data. In addition, dashboard must be able to display information pertaining to the organization’s Key Performance Indicators
(KPI) on its main interface. Thus, the display panel should allow for the displaying of performance report trends to align the organizational
goals and performance. This can assist decision makers, specifically managers, in monitoring performance and taking preventative actions
effectively.

Accuracy is the most important building element of a dashboard, as it promotes trust and encourages the user to utilize it in the decision
making. Therefore, the dashboard should be tested thoroughly to ensure data validity before any user interaction. Responsiveness is also
essential, as it allows the user to access relevant information in a timely manner, thereby making it more accurate, meaningful, and up to
date. This is essential for overcoming critical events, while also providing more accurate data for current or future decisions.

Due to the sensitivity of the data collected, the output should be tailored to the individual users’ needs and responsibilities, as well as be
provided in real time to facilitate the decision-making process. An easy to use and understand dashboard assists organizations in making
important strategic decisions related to daily activities. Thus, it should be designed in line with the ‘SMART’ paradigm for an effective
