1.0 INTRODUCTION

This report pertains to the design calculations for road.

2.0 BASIC INFORMATION

2.1 Codes & Standards

- Civil/ Structural Design Basis

IRC 37 - Guidelines for the design of flexible pavements

3.0 DESIGN CALCULATIONS

The road is classified as an access road. Hence, it is subjected to low traffic.

Design data

CBR value of existing subgrade = 2 %

Design life of road, n = 15 yrs. Refer Cl.3.3.3.2, Page 11 of IRC:37-2001
Initial traffic in the year of completion of
= 300
construction (CV/day), A
Vehicle damage factor, F = 1.5 Refer Table 1, Page 12 of IRC:37-2001
Annual growth rate of commercial vehicle, r = 2 %
Lane distribution factor, D = 1

Estimation of design traffic

Cumulative number of standards axles, N = 365 [(1+r)n-1]

xAxDxF
r
= 2.84 msa ≈ 3 msa

Paving thickness and composition

Referring to plate-1 in IRC 37, for CBR 2% and cumulative traffic 2 msa,

Wearing course = 50 mm
Granular base course = 225 mm
Granular sub-base course = 335 mm

Total pavement thickness = 610 mm
