11 Roadblocks in following God Uphill, the tests and Hindrances
Joshua 14:8 "Nevertheless my brethren
who went up with me made the heart of
the people melt with fear; but I followed
the LORD my God fully.

Decide to experience possible

conflict. Anyone who obeys the Lord will
encounter conflict. First of all, there will be
inner discord when what God is calling us
to do seems humanly unreasonable.
Furthermore, obedience might also result
in relational disharmony if others don’t
understand or agree with what the Lord is
telling us to do.
18 Motives of following God Wrong Reasons For Following Jesus
John 6:26-27-Jesus answered them, “Truly,
truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not
because you saw signs, but because you
ate your fill of the loaves. Do not labor for
the food that perishes, but for the food
that endures to eternal life, which the Son
of Man will give to you. For on him God
the Father has set his seal.”

4 Incentives of Following God Joshua 14:9 "So Moses swore on that day,
saying, 'Surely the land on which your foot
has trodden will be an inheritance to you
and to your children forever, because you
have followed the LORD my God fully.'

Obedience also involves hope in a

future blessing. If there is no
future life, then Christianity would
be foolish 1Co 15:14-18. Jesus
promised that his disciples would
find that eternal life is worth far
more than anything they might
have to give up in this age Mk
10:29-30. Everyone who is saved
will have the joy of knowing God
forever, but there are also
rewards in addition to eternal joy.
Jesus encouraged his disciples to
“store up for yourselves treasures
in heaven” Mat 6:19-21. Several
of his parables indicate that we
will be rewarded for what we do in
this life. God rewards those who
seek him Heb 11:6.

11 Torn between two Directions If God wants us to follow Him,

why do we have to choose, there
are crossroads
Contest between God and Evil
18 Remaining true to our Joshua 14:14 Therefore, Hebron became
commitment the inheritance of Caleb the son of
Jephunneh the Kenizzite until this day,
because he followed the LORD God of
Israel fully.
Judges 2.1-15-10 After that whole
generation had been gathered to
their ancestors, another
generation grew up who knew
neither the LORD nor what he had
done for Israel.

Luke 14.25-34-The Cost of Being a Disciple
25Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate
father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my
disciple. 27And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. 28“Suppose one of you wants
to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29For
if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person
began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’ 31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first
sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty
thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of
peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. 34“Salt is
good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile;
it is thrown out. “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”

Matthew 8.18-22-The Cost of Following Jesus

18When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19Then a teacher of the
law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds
have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and
bury my father.” 22But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

Matthew 19.16-30-The Rich and the Kingdom of God

16Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” 17“Why do
you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the
commandments.” 18“Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied, “‘you shall not murder, you shall not commit
adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your
neighbor as yourself.’ ” 20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” 21Jesus answered, “If you
want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come,
follow me.” 22When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23 Then Jesus said to
his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is
easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
25When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?” 26Jesus looked at
them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” 27 Peter answered him, “We have left
everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?” 28Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all
things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones,
judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or
wife[e] or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many
who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.
