A further improvement is the provision of a contoured raised surface on the spting pressure plate, afiording easy load rod engagement and adjustment which is particularly impor. lant when heavy loads are involved. ‘SAFE, FOOL-PROOF INSTALLATION Both visible and mechanical evidence in the Bergen design, enables the site engineer to determine ‘the spring load condition prior to the removal of the pre-set pins (plain rivets). A slight downward inclination of the pre-set pins indicates an underloaded condition and an upward inclination denotes overloading, while the pre-set pins in the horizontal position indicate proper loading and permit their removal by hand, Should it be apparent during the installation and commissioning period that the support is underloaded or overloaded as described above, rotating the turn buckle will bring the pre-set pins to 2 horizontal position, indicating correct loading and permitting easy removal of the pins. The pre-set pins are painted red and tagged "REMOVE AFTER INSTALLATION". Thay may be stored and easily te-inserted for future use, NEW IMPROVEMENTS. All spring units are provided with @ turn buckle or other suitable coupling and the take out is given near the Centre which allows adequate site load adjustment up and down, thus eliminating the need of either adjustment means in the hanger assembly. . To meet present and future demands the maximum load capacity has been extended to 38,676 Ibs, The housing opening permits visual inspection of all parts at all times, { .A new and direct reading size selection table has been evolved that enables the designer to select correct spring unit. Use of the table not only assures the proper and most economical size selection ‘ora loae travel Conclions, but also shminatey errs and since valuable engineering time. The correct size from this table is obtained readily by simply knowing the allowable percentage variation in support- ing force, the magnitude and direction of travel and the operating (hot) load, DESCRIPTION AND SELECTION OF VARIABLE SUPPORTS The Bergen ‘‘Variable Support” is a spring loaded device used for the support of piping and equip- ment generally subject to moderate vertical expansion, As the name implies, the supporting force varies with the piping movement. : ‘The proper support of the piping system which changes its vertical dimension and position because of thermal differences, is a critical matter and tigid supports cannot satisfy this condition. The variable support however permits this thermal “growth” but still carries all or most of the load dependent upon the degree of compression of the spring. In selecting the correct support for any given condition, the designer must first determine the support location and the loads and travels at those locations. The two most important criteria are then as follows: : 1. The overall nature of the piping system, i.e. configuration, pipe material and pipe contents. Ordinarily, variable supports are employed on less critical lines capable of absorbing some (additional stress, or where equipment connections can safely withstand an adgitionat reaction. 2, The amount of vertical expansion, This dictates the degree of spring compression which in turn controls the actual supporting force. Bergen Variable Supports are manuiactured in nine different standard arrangements and three different travel series. This variety permits great flexibility of installation and overall hanger design, and reference to the catalogue will indicate these basic arrangements, Selection SELECTION OF VARIABLE SUPPORTS = Step 1. Gay mine the type of support best suited for the conditions (type A, B, C, 0, EF, R, G and Slep 2. Refer to the load deflection chart, The designer must now determing the allowable amount of support variation. The Bergen V.S4 travel hangers will produce a load variation of full that given by the V.S.2 hangers, whilst the V.S.2 units will give half the variation of the V.e¢ hangers. In other words, the longer the spring, the less variable the supporting force. Ay guide in determining the correct travel series, note that an actual pipe moverest not than ¥" for V.S.1, 1” for V.S.2, and 2" for V.S.4, Bergen Springs will result in a load variation of 2pproximately 2074 or on a comparative measure of 4" travel the load variation of VS, V.S.2 and V.S.4 is 20%, 10% and 5% respectively, woe : : ‘Step 3. Continue to refer to the load deflection chart and select the travel series and size which ill satisfy the pre-determined conditions of allowable percentage variation in supporting force, magnitude and direction of travel, and the operating (hot) load. Due to the deflection of springs caused by the vertical thermal expansion of the piping, it is only possible te Eanry the correct pipe load in one condition. We normally recommend correct load carrying" in hot condition when the other pipe stresses are generally at the maximum and the pips strength reduced. It is therefore customary to state the load to be carried when the piping ~ is in Its hot or operating position together with the magnitude and direction of travel one the cold to the hot position. If the data is given in this manner, the cold load is then deter mined by moving on the chart (up or down) in the opposite direction to the stated pips movement. The tabulated figures given in the chart represent load in Ibs. supported at ter increments of deflection of 75” for the V.S.1 series, {* for the V.S.2 series and 4° for the V8.4 series. Step 4. When pidering variable support hangers the following information should be stated: 1. Load. 2. Type of support. 3. Size of support. 4. Type of thread required, 5. Magnitude and direction of movement from cold to hot condition, : 6. Centre to centre distance (twin supports only), EXAMPLE Pipe load 914 tbs. (assumed hot). Expansion 7” downward from cold to hot. Allowable percentage variation in supporting force —20%, Step 1. \tis assumes that type A will suit the physical structural requirements. Step 2. Working within the recomniended 20% limit on variation, it will be seen th #F° will therefore fall into the V.S.1 travel series. z ‘Step 3, Referring to the load deflection chart it is seen that a load of 914 Ibs. correctly supported in the hot condition will require @ size 9 support as this will allow the pipe to move ey" in an upward direction whilst the system is changing its state from the hot to cold condition, It should be noted, that a size 10 support would also accommodate the hot load of 914 Ibs, but would not provide sufficient travel capacity to allow for the ye" movement in an upware direction when the system changes from its hot to cold condition. Should it be necessary to accurately determine the supporting effect of any suppori in the cold condition, this can be simply achieved by multiplying the spring rate of the appropriate travel series and size of support by the actual movement of the pipe. In the case of movements from hot to cold in an upward direction the figures obtained by the method described above should be subtracted from the hot load condition and for movements downward from hot to cold the figures should be added to the original hot load condition, 2 travel of THREADS ‘The load couplings may be obtained screwed either Whitworth, Unified Course or metric. The units are pre-set to the cold load and only a niinor adjustment, to remove the pre-set pins, is required on the site to make the units operational. The installed height “L" equals the X dimension plus the” difference between the maximum working range, the load line of the unit and the cold load position, as shown in the load deflec- tion chart on page 4 . For example, if the travel series required is a V.S.1 and the cold pre-set load is determined at 1;446 Ibs., a V.S.F.A size 11 support would be chosen. The X dimension for this size would be 7" and to this should be added 3° (1f” minus . 7 #) thus making the installed height 7%*. The same procedure : + applies also to the V.S.R. series of supports.
