EASY PROGRAMMING FOR THE

KENWOOD TH-F6A
Programming a Frequency (Simplex) or a Repeater
1. Press A/B and select band A
2. Press the VFO key
3. Press the ENT key
4. You can enter your desired frequency in either of three ways.

a. Using the keypad enter the frequency (the radio will enter the decimal point for you).
b. Press the BAND/2 key to the desired band. Use the joy stick, ▲/▼ to choose the
frequency.
c. Press the BAND/2 key to the desired band then turn the tuning knob to the desired
frequency.

If you find you cannot tune the last two digits of the frequency because the dial or the ▲/▼ goes
past the frequency you will have to change the frequency step to a finer setting. Refer to
Changing the Frequency Step below.

You do not need to go further for a simplex frequency. However, remember the offset and PL
need not be set.

5. Select the offset. First press the F key. Then press the REV/SHIFT/8 key. Every time the F and
REV keys are pressed the display will change from + to ─ to no sign for a simplex frequency.
6. Select the TONE/ENCODE/PL. Press the TONE/TSEL/7 key. A T will now appear in the display.
7. Now, select the PL/TONE by pressing the F key. Then press T.SEL/TONE/7. The display will now
show TONE FREQ with a tone frequency flashing. Turn the main tuning knob to the desired
PL/TONE frequency you want. Store this tone by pushing the MENU joystick to the right. The
display will show OK to store.

Store Entry into Memory


To store all of the above changes into the MEMORY. Press the F key. A memory location
number, right side of the display, will flash. Turn the main tuning knob to the desired memory
location number. Store the information into that memory location by pressing the MR/M.IN/C key.
To recall the memory press the MR key.

Naming a Memory Channel


1. Press MR key to recall your desired memory channel.
2. Press the F key and then the MN<->f key to enter the memory name input mode.
3. Turn main tuning knob or press ▲/▼ to select letter or character.
4. Press MONI to delete a character entered wrong.
5. Press ► to move cursor to next digit.
6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 to enter up to eight characters.
7. Press MNU or ► twice to complete the entry if less than eight characters.
8. After storing the memory name pressing MN<->f switches the display between memory name and
frequency.

Clearing a Memory Channel
1. Recall the memory channel to be erased.
2. Turn the power to the radio off.
3. Press MR + Power button and an erase confirmation screen appears.
4. Press MR to erase the channel.

Changing the Frequency Step


1. Press F then the FINE/STEP/0 button. The current frequency step size appears.
2. Turn the TUNING knob or the ▲/▼ to select the desired frequency step.
3. Press MNU or the ► to store the setting.
4. If you wish to cancel the frequency you just chose, before storing it, press ◄ or PTT.

Memory Recall Mode


1. Press MNU.
2. Turn the tuning knob or ▲/▼ on the joy stick to select Menu number 3 (MR METHOD).
3. Press ► or MNU to select Menu number 3.
4. Turn the tuning knob or press ▲/▼ to select the method you want to use; CURRENT BAND or
ALL BANDS.
5. Press ► or MNU to store your selection.

Programming Split Frequencies

First store the receive frequency.


1. Press A/B and select band A
2. Press the VFO key
3. Press the ENT key
4. Select desired frequency (example: 446.650 using the keypad)
5. Select the TONE/ENCODE/PL by pressing the TONE/TSEL/7 key. A T will now appear in the
display.
6. Select the PL/TONE by pressing the F key. Then press T.SEL/TONE/7. The display will now show
TONE FREQ with a tone flashing.
7. Turn the main tuning knob to the desired PL/TONE. Store this tone by toggling the MENU joystick
to the right. It will show OK to store.

Store the transmit frequency


1. Turn the Tuning control knob or the ▲/▼ to select the transmit frequency.
2. Press PTT + MR to store the transmit frequency.

Programming the CALL Channel


1. Press BAND to select desired band.
2. Select the desired frequency (with Tone, offset, etc.).
3. Press F and then CALL. The selected frequency is now stored in the CALL Channel for the
selected band.

Recalling a CALL Channel


1. Press BAND to select the desired BAND.
2. Press CALL to recall the Call channel for the operating band selected.
3. A C will appear with the selected frequency.

4. To return to the previous frequency press CALL again.

Information Channels
1. Press INFO to recall the information channels.
2. Information channels appear on the B band.

Reprogramming an Information Channel


1. Press VFO.
2. Select desired frequency and mode.
3. Turn main tuning knob or press ▲/▼ to select the desired Information channel.
4. Press MR. A long beep sounds. The new information is stored.

Tone Frequency ID Scan


This function scans through the tone frequencies to identify the incoming tone frequency on a
received signal.
1. Press TONE/7 key to turn on the Tone function.
2. Press F.
3. Press and hold the TONE/7 key for one second. The scan starts when an incoming frequency is
detected.
4. When the Tone Frequency is detected a beep will sound and the scan stops. The Tone frequency
will be displayed.
5. Press ► to accept the Tone frequency identified.

Receiving Low Band (HF) Frequencies


1. Turn off the internal bar antenna.
2. Press MENU. Move the joystick to select menu 26, BAR ANT.
3. Press the joy stick to select this option.
4. Push the joy stick to select ‘DISABLED’.
5. Push joy stick to the right to store the selection.
6. Move joystick to the right ‘ESC’ to exit the menus.

Listening to AM and FM Radio Stations

FM
1. Go to Band B.
2. Press the BAND key until 51.000 MHz is displayed. Now go to the next frequency bank shown on
the display.
3. Enter the desired frequency (example 102.7 FM).
4. Press the ENT key. Enter 102.
5. Press the MHz key for the decimal point.
6. Enter 700 from the key pad.
7. Press the F key.
8. Press the BAND/MODE key. Select WFM.
9. Turn off the Squelch. Press SQL.
10. Turn main tuning knob to the left so no vertical bars are showing.
11. Press SQL to exit this mode.

AM
1. Press the BAND key until 0.540 MHz is displayed. Now go to the next frequency bank shown on
the display.
2. Press the F key and then the BAND/MODE/2 key to change to AM.
3. Enter the desired frequency (example 710 AM) by entering 000710. The display will show 0.710
AM.
4. Turn off the Squelch. Press SQL.
5. Turn main tuning knob to the left so no vertical bars are showing.
6. Press SQL to exit this mode.

Scanning

SCANNING A BAND
1. Press VFO.
2. Press BAND to select desired band to scan.
3. Press VFO and hold for one second. This starts the band scan.
4. Press VFO or PTT to stop the scan.

SCANNING FREQUENCIES (MHz)


1. Press VFO.
2. Press MHz and hold for one second. This starts the scan.
3. Press MHz or PTT to stop the scan.

SCANNING YOUR MEMORY CHANNELS


1. Press MR and hold for one second. This starts the scan.
2. Press MR or PTT to stop the scan.

Adjusting the Squelch


1. Press SQL/5 key.
2. Turn the tuning knob or press ▲/▼ to adjust the level.
3. Press MNU to store the new setting.

Transmit Power
Press LOW. Each time you press LOW the radio cycles between the three power levels.
H (HIGH) – 5W Power levels differ for the different batteries. These
L (LOW) – 0.5W levels are for the standard PB-42L battery.
EL (Extra LOW) – 0.05W

The Th-F6A is equipped with a transceiver, for the A band, and a receiver, for the B band.
This allows you the capability of monitoring two frequencies at the same time.

Dual Band Operation Single Band Operation


1. Press F then the A/B DUAL button. Press F then the A/B to turn off
2. Press A/B to select the band to transmit the dual band mode.
